Conseguir licencia para casarse es muy fácil

TULSA, OK – El matrimonio es algo esencial a la condición humana que ha existido desde que los humanos habitamos este mundo. Las parejas se enamoran y eventualmente quieren casarse. Pero en una sociedad llena de reglas y de leyes hay ciertos procedimientos que hay que seguir, que aplican, inclusive a quienes emigran de otros países, incluyendo a los indocumentados que pueden sentirse un poco intimidados por el aspecto burocrático del casamiento y sienten que quizás no pueden hacerlo por su falta de estatuto residencial. La Semana recientemente visitó el lugar donde todo se inicia para aclarar algunas cosas sobre el asunto y disipar los rumores, hoy les traemos una nota sobre la Corte y cómo obtener una licencia matrimonial. 

Jason Jones es supervisor en la división de familia de la Corte del Condado de Tulsa, donde los novios tienen que ir a obtener una licencia de matrimonio, el documento que hay que presentar para que la boda sea oficial. 

Jones le dijo a La Semana que el trámite es sorprendentemente simple, barato y no debería ser visto como un obstáculo sino como el primer paso en una vida de bendiciones. 

Los interesados deben ir en persona a la corte donde tienen que mostrar una identificación válida, se aceptan licencias de conducir de cualquier jurisdicción, inclusive extranjeras, pasaportes o tarjetas verdes. También puede presentarse una partida de nacimiento junto con una foto de identificación válida.  

La licencia cuesta $50 y es irrelevante el estado inmigratorio de la pareja en Estados Unidos. “No hacemos esas preguntas”, explicó Jones. “Lo único que nos importa es que quieran casarse y que tengan una identificación válida que demuestre que son quienes dicen ser”. 

Jones aseguró que el procedimiento toma solamente unos 20 minutos y dijo que los hispanos son bienvenidos, pues en la corte nadie guarda registros democráticos. 

Ya tienes tu licencia de matrimonio, ¿Qué sigue? “Una vez que se consigue la licencia de matrimonio es válida durante diez días para dársela a quien sea que realice la ceremonia”, dijo Jones.  “Deben casarse dentro de los 10 días de la emisión de la licencia, el estatuto sólo dice que en ese tiempo deben entregar la licencia a quien realice la boda”. 

El matrimonio debe realizarse en el estado de Oklahoma.  

La corte cuenta con empleados bilingües disponibles para asistir a quienes no tengan un buen nivel de inglés, por lo que no hay que temer la barrera lingüística. 

Jones nos entregó estadísticas que demuestran que en el condado de Tulsa las licencias matrimoniales decrecieron unos puntos durante el 2018, pero rondan anualmente en 5000. Además en Tulsa hay más matrimonios que divorcios, lo que es una buena noticia. 

La División de Licencias Matrimoniales del Condado de Tulsa se encuentra en el segundo piso de la corte, emplazada al 500 Sur de la calle Denver. Para solicitar una licencia ambos futuros cónyuges deberán presentarse en la secretaría del tribunal entre las 8 de la mañana y las 4 de la tarde de lunes a viernes. 

Jones reiteró que todos son bienvenidos y que nadie debe dejar que una licencia matrimonial se interponga en el camino del verdadero amor. (La Semana) 

Getting a marriage license is easy

TULSA, OK — It’s an inevitable part of the human condition that has been happening for a long as people have been on the planet – couples fall in love and want to get married. But in a society of laws and rules, there are procedures that must be followed, and those who immigrated here from other countries, including many who are undocumented, may be intimidated by the official aspect of getting married, or might even think they don’t qualify because of their residency stats. To shed light on the procedure and dispel any false rumors, La Semana visited the place where it all starts – the courthouse. 

Jason Jones is the supervisor at the Family Division at the Tulsa County Courthouse, which is where lovebirds must go to obtain the all important marriage license, the document they need before any wedding can make their union official. 

Jones told La Semana the whole thing is surprisingly simple, affordable, and shouldn’t be viewed as an obstacle but merely an easy first step in a life of wedded bliss. 

Both parties must be come to the courthouse in person and will need to show identification. Accepted forms of ID include a driver’s license from any jurisdiction (even a foreign country), a passport, or a green card. A birth certificate is also acceptable, but it must be shown along with a photo ID such as a food handler’s permit. 

The license costs $50, and whether or not the happy couple is lawfully present in the United States is irrelevant.  

“We don’t ask that question,” Jones explained. “All we care about is that they’re wanting to get married, and that they show us some form of ID to prove who they are.” 

Jones said the whole procedure takes about 20 minutes, and he says Hispanics are always welcome, although the courthouse doesn’t keep any demographic statistics. 

So now you have your marriage license – what next? 

“After we issue the marriage license they have 10 days to put the license in the hands of whoever is going to perform the ceremony,” Jones said. “They can get married after the 10 days, the statute just says they have to put [the marriage license] in the hands of whoever’s going to perform the ceremony within 10 days.” 

The marriage ceremony must be performed in Oklahoma. 

Spanish speaking employees are available to help those with limited English, so don’t be worried about a language barrier. 

Jones provided statistics showing that new marriage licenses issued in Tulsa County decreased slightly in 2018, but has generally hovered at just under 5,000 annually. And marriages here outnumber divorces by a healthy margin. 

The Marriage License Division of the Tulsa County Court Clerk’s Office is located on the second floor of the Tulsa County Courthouse, 500 S. Denver, Tulsa, OK. To apply for a marriage license both parties need to be present at the Court Clerk’s Office between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. 

Jones reiterated that all are welcome and that no one should let the quick and easy step of getting a marriage license stand in the way of true love. (La Semana)
