Nuevo barco de combate lleva el nombre El USS Tulsa

SAN FRANCISCO—El buque de guerra litoral USS Tulsa (LCS 16) fue comisionado como el principal buque de combate en superficie de la marina de Estados Unidos en una ceremonia en San Francisco el pasado 16 de febrero. Este es el nuevo buque variante del Independence, que lleva el nombre de la ciudad de Tulsa, Oklahoma. 

“Es un gran buque y una gran adición a nuestra flota, por más que nos impresione el barco, no sería nada sin la tripulación que descansa cada mañana en su proa”, dijo el comandante Drew Borovies. “Si bien todos han alcanzado grandes metas ya, saben que lo mejor está por suceder ahora que Tulsa se incorpora a nuestra flota, lista para responder al llamado de la nación. Ellos son los mejores marineros, y este buque lo mejor de la marina. Aquí se los presento, están listos y seguros de llevar a este buque de guerra al mar”. 

En menos de 3 años el buque progresó de estar resguardado en Mobile, Alabama hasta ser destinado al mar. Kathy Taylor es la madrina del barco, como ex alcaldesa de la ciudad estuvo presente en ambos eventos. “Logré conocer a la tripulación del USS Tulsa y se que van a pelear donde los necesiten”, dijo Taylor. “Van a proteger  a este país a cualquier costo porque saben lo que están defendiendo y juraron mantener la promesa que le hicieron a todos los americanos”. 

El actual alcalde, G.T. Bynum enfatizó en el vínculo que une a la ciudad de Tulsa con los marineros que sirven en el flamante barco. “Cuando estén por el mundo, sin importar el día o la hora, esperamos que sepan que hay cientos de personas en Tulsa pensando en ustedes que se sienten honrados de que un pedacito de nosotros esté allí con ustedes, y están muy orgullosos de su labor”, dijo Bynum. 

La tripulación viitó la ciudad hace un año para saber más del lugar y su gente. 

Tulsa se unirá a la marina en un momento de expansión de la fuerza armada y un aumento de tripulantes y necesidades en el mundo. 

El secretario asistente de la marina, James Guertz, destacó que Tulsa es el quinto barco que la marina comisionó en los pasados 50 días y uno de los 13 barcos que serán comisionados durante el año, en comparación a los 8 seleccionados el año pasado. Esto se corresponde con los esfuerzos de la nación para asegurar la libertad de los mares.   

El buque viajará a San Diego para unirse al escuadrón 1 del buque de combate Litoral y otros ocho buques de guerra en la base naval de la ciudad. 

 

 

USS Tulsa Commissioned as Navy’s Newest Surface Combatant 

 

SAN FRANCISCO– The littoral combat ship USS Tulsa (LCS 16) was commissioned as the Navy’s newest surface combatant in a ceremony in San Francisco Feb. 16. 

The Independence-variant LCS is the Navy’s second ship to be named for the city of Tulsa, Oklahoma. 

“She truly is an amazing ship and an amazing addition to the fleet, but as impressive as she is, she would be nothing without the Sailors you see lining her deck this morning,” said Cmdr. Drew Borovies, Tulsa’s commanding officer. “And as much as they have already accomplished, they know their true greatness lies ahead as Tulsa enters the fleet and stands ready to answer her nation’s call. They are the finest Sailors our Navy has to offer. They are tough, able and ready to take our nation’s newest warship to sea.” 

Indeed, in little more than three years, the ship has progressed from its keel laying in Mobile, Alabama, to its commissioning. Kathy Taylor, ship’s sponsor and former Tulsa mayor, was present for both events and many in between. 

“I have gotten to know the crew of this exceptional USS Tulsa, and I know they will fight when they must,” said Taylor. “I know they will protect this country at all costs, because they know everything they fight for and they protect keeps the promises made to all Americans.” 

Current Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum emphasized the bond between the people of Tulsa and the Sailors who serve aboard the Navy’s newest ship. 

“Wherever you are in the world, whatever day it might be or whatever hour in that day, we hope you know that there are hundreds of thousands of your fellow Tulsans who are thinking of you, and who are honored to be associated with you and are so proud of you,” said Bynum. 

The crew visited the city little more than a year ago to learn more about it and its people.  

Tulsa will join the fleet at a time of expansion of capability as well as increased demand on the Navy forces. 

Assistant Secretary of the Navy James Guertz noted Tulsa is the fifth ship the Navy has commissioned in the past 50 days and one of 13 ships slated to be commissioned this year – up from eight a year ago – as part of broader efforts to ensure the nation’s maritime freedom. 

The ship will travel to San Diego to join Littoral Combat Ship Squadron 1 and eight other littoral combat ships currently home-ported at Naval Base San Diego.
