“Herramientas de Satán ” – escándalo sexual que sacude a la iglesia

TULSA, OK – El peor escándalo en la historia de la Iglesia Católica prendió fuego los titulares del mundo la semana pasada durante la primera reunión Vaticana “Sobre la Protección de los Menores en la Iglesia”, y el lunes cuando nos enteramos que un jurado de Australia condenó por abuso sexual de dos coristas menores a un alto miembro de la jerarquía eclesiástica. El cardenal George Pell, tesorero y ministro de economía del vaticano fue declarado culpable de haber abusado a  de dos niños de 13 años en 1996.  La noticia llegó dos días después de que el Papa Francisco condenara sus acciones en una reunión histórica destinada a mejorar la imagen de una iglesia que hace años lucha con la polémica de abuso sexual. 

El domingo 24 de febrero el Sumo Pontífice denuncio el turismo sexual y la victimización de menores en todo el mundo antes de concentrar su atención en el mayor escándalo en la historia de su iglesia 

“La inhumanidad del fenómeno a escala mundial es todavía más grave y más escandalosa en la Iglesia, porque contrasta con su autoridad moral y su credibilidad ética. El consagrado, elegido por Dios para guiar las almas a la salvación, se deja subyugar por su fragilidad humana, o por su enfermedad, convirtiéndose en instrumento de satanás. En los abusos, nosotros vemos la mano del mal que no perdona ni siquiera la inocencia de los niños”, dijo el Papa. 

Esta tragedia de proporciones éticas apuñala el corazón del catolicismo como nunca antes. Un estudio publicado por la escuela de justicia criminal John Jay de Nueva York indico´que durante el periodo 1950-2002 se recibieron 11.000 denuncias por abuso sexual de menores en Estados Unidos que afectaron a unos 4392 curas. Muchas de estas acusaciones fueron tapadas por los obispos locales y se buscó transferir a los ofensores a otras comunidades donde siguieron atrapando presas.  

Hasta el momento en Oklahoma se registraron sólo dos acusaciones de abuso contra líderes de la iglesia, ambos en la arquidiócesis de Oklahoma City. En ambos incidentes los obispos de Tulsa y Oklahoma City denunciaron los crímenes y pidieron cooperación y entendimiento ante la posibilidad de nuevas denuncias. 

“En una Carta datada el 14 de noviembre una víctima denunció un caso de abuso sexual a principios de los 70’s con un cura llamado Benjamin Zoeller que trabajaba en la Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Socorro en Oklahoma City”, anunció la arquidiócesis de Oklahoma City en una declaración emitida el 16 de noviembre del 2018. “A pedido del arzobispo Coakley, la arquidióscesis se encuentra evaluando el archivo de Zoeller por medio de una investigación conducida por una firma independiente”.  La iglesia destacó que Zoeller fue removido de su cargo en el 2002 y pidió que “todo aquél que haya sido abusado o sepa de un menor abusado lo denuncie inmediatamente”. 

Zoeller fue párroco en la Iglesia de Sta.María de Tulsa. 

El Padre James Mickus también fue removido por el arzobispo Coakley en noviembre del 2018,  en medio de una investigación por abuso sexual. Mickus sigue alegando su inocencia y asegura haber sido exonerado de acusaciones previas.  

Comentando sobre el caso que el año pasado sacudió a Pennsylvania, el obispo de Tulsa, David Konderla escribió: “Le prometo a la gente del Este de Oklahoma que voy a trabajar con mis hermanos obispos para erradicar este mal, erigir estructuras transparentes, especialmente entre los obispos, para buscar siempre la santidad”.  

En Roma el Papa Francisco trata de navegar la Iglesia en mares turbulentos, y sus esfuerzos son cada vez más difíciles entre la maraña de constantes acusaciones.  (La Semana) 

 

“Tools of Satan” – the Catholic church’s ongoing sex abuse scandal

TULSA, OK — The worst scandal to plague the Catholic church in modern history was in the headlines twice in the past week, first during the Vatican’s meeting on “The Protection of Minors in the Church” and again on Monday, when news came that the highest level Catholic cleric ever charged with child sex abuse was convicted by an Australian jury of molesting two choirboys. Cardinal George Pell, the Vatican’s treasurer and economy minister, was found guilty of sexually abusing two 13-year-old boys in 1996, news that broke less than a day after Pope Francis condemned such actions during an historic meeting designed to improve the church’s abysmal record in confronting decades of worldwide abuse by catholic clergy. 

Addressing the meeting on Sunday, February 24, the pontiff denounced sexual tourism and the victimization of minors across the globe before turning his attention to the scandal within the church he now leads. 

“The brutality of this worldwide phenomenon becomes all the more grave and scandalous in the Church, for it is utterly incompatible with her moral authority and ethical credibility,” Pope Francis said. “Consecrated persons, chosen by God to guide souls to salvation, let themselves be dominated by their human frailty or sickness and thus become tools of Satan. In abuse, we see the hand of the evil that does not spare even the innocence of children.” 

It is a tragedy of epic proportions striking at the heart of Catholicism.  

A study conducted by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York indicated that, during a period from 1950-2002 roughly 11,000 allegations of sexual abuse of minors had been made against 4,392 priests in the USA. Worse was the fact that many if not most of these allegations were covered up by local bishops and that when action was taken against offenders it was often to transfer them to other parishes where they could continue to prey on new sets of victims. 

To date Oklahoma has seen only two cases of priests accused of abuse, both from the Oklahoma City Archdiocese. In each of these incidents, the bishops of both Oklahoma City and Tulsa denounced the crimes and pledged openness and cooperation in any cases that may arise.  

“In a letter dated Nov. 14, a victim reported an incident of child sexual abuse in the early 1970s involving former priest Benjamin Zoeller while he was assigned to The Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Oklahoma City,” the Oklahoma City Archdiocese said in a statement issued on Nov. 16 of 2018. “At the request of Archbishop Coakley, the archdiocese is currently reviewing Zoeller’s priest file as part of a comprehensive review by an independent firm.” 

The Archdiocese pointed out that Zoeller had been removed as a priest in 2002, and encouraged “anyone who has been abused or may know of abuse of a minor to report it immediately.” 

Among Zoeller’s earlier postings was a period at the parish of the Church of St. Mary in Tulsa. 

An ongoing case involves Father James Mickus, who was removed by Archbishop Coakley in November 2018 pending an investigation into alleged child sex abuse. Mickus maintains his innocence and claims he was exonerated in an earlier accusation. 

Commenting in August of last year following an explosive Grand Jury report into sex abuse of minors by clergy in Pennsylvania, Tulsa Bishop David Konderla wrote, “I promise you and the people in Eastern Oklahoma that I will work with my brother bishops to eradicate this evil, to erect structures of accountability, especially for us bishops, and to strive toward holiness.” 

Back in Rome, as Pope Francis works to navigate the church through this crisis, his efforts are surely made more difficult by the seemingly endless stream of new allegations. (La Semana)
