El plan maquiavélico de Trump apenas comienza

WASHINGTON, DC– Si todavía pone en duda cuán envalentonado está Donald Trump tras presuntamente ser “exonerado” de colusión en la trama rusa, para muestras varios botones de los pasados días y horas: amenazó con “cerrar” la frontera con México por la crisis humanitaria que él mismo ha creado y exacerbado con sus políticas migratorias; su Secretaria de Seguridad Nacional (DHS) quiere que el Congreso le permita deportar de forma expedita a menores no acompañados que sean detenidos, incluyendo aquellos que quieran solicitar asilo; y su Departamento de Estado suspendió la ayuda exterior de unos 500 millones de dólares a El Salvador, Guatemala y Honduras porque no han hecho lo suficiente para frenar la salida de migrantes. Las mismas naciones que Fox TV, el canal oficial de la Casa Blanca, describió el domingo como “3 países mexicanos”. 

 

La intensificación de la ya de por sí cruel política migratoria de esta administración no es casualidad. 

 

Ya Trump había implementado medidas nefastas que todavía siguen afectando a miles, entre ellas la separación de familias en la frontera, el encierro de niños y menores en jaulas, muchos de los cuales se han extraviado en el sistema y siguen sin ser reunificados con sus familiares; al menos dos menores, que se sepa, han fallecido en custodia de autoridades migratorias, sin contar los que alegan haber sido víctimas de abuso sexual o físico. 

 

Su gobierno intenta deshacer las leyes de asilo para evitar que migrantes centroamericanos que vienen huyendo para salvar sus vidas puedan solicitar refugio en Estados Unidos. Tras su ingreso, muchos migrantes son devueltos a México mientras llegue la fecha de su audiencia. 

 

Según el gobierno de Trump, todo esto tiene el fin de “disuadir” a otros migrantes que planifiquen hacer la travesía al norte. 

 

Pero la realidad es otra. A Trump no le interesa disuadir a ningún migrante. Su intención ha sido generar una crisis migratoria para explotarla políticamente y mantener el favor entre su base de apoyo. 

 

Así lo hizo a fines del año pasado, cuando provocó un cierre del gobierno por 35 días demandando que se financiara el muro fronterizo, que poco le importa pero que también utiliza para atizar a su base. 

 

Las políticas migratorias de cero tolerancia, la manipulación de las leyes de asilo y otros factores han contribuido al caos que se está viviendo en la frontera. Es decir, que Trump genera una crisis para luego convertirse en el “paladín” de su base prejuiciosa ofreciendo como “solución” su muro, el cierre de la frontera o “castigar” a los países emisores de migrantes, quitándoles fondos que irónicamente se destinan a organizaciones no gubernamentales que buscan abordar la violencia y las carencias económicas que empujan a los migrantes a salir de sus países de origen. 

 

Porque nadie por gusto atraviesa países, ríos y desiertos con hijos a cuestas para llegar a la frontera estadounidense, entregarse a las autoridades migratorias para solicitar asilo, como lo define la ley, para luego ser devuelto a México como un paria, o encerrado como ganado debajo de un puente de una autopista en El Paso, Texas, sin ningún tipo de servicios y durmiendo a la intemperie. 

 

Ahí están expuestos al hambre, a las inclemencias del tiempo, a enfermedades y a abusos, incluyendo de parte de transeúntes que les gritan improperios, según reportes de prensa. 

 

Esto no es disuasión. Esto es crueldad a la enésima potencia. Esto es maldad, y es una vergüenza para una nación que se precia de defender valores democráticos y humanitarios. 

 

Es maquiavélico. 

 

Y es una manifestación de que Trump, luego de la pesquisa del Rusiagate, se siente invencible, aunque ni el Congreso ni los contribuyentes que pagamos por la investigación hayamos visto el reporte final para ver si, en efecto, lo libra de toda culpa o hay razones de peso que ameriten acciones de parte del Congreso. 

 

Sospecho que, de no haber un acontecimiento de peso, seremos testigos de uno de los ciclos electorales más sucios de la historia reciente, porque este presidente está desatado. Se siente reivindicado y con carta blanca para impulsar su agenda extremista apoyado por sus cómplices republicanos del Congreso. Y sus seguidores harán lo que sea para defender su permanencia por otros 4 años. Que Dios nos agarre confesados. 

 

 

Trump’s Machiavellian plan has scarcely begun

WASHINGTON, DC – If there was still any doubt about how emboldened Donald Trump is since presumably being “exonerated” of collusion in the Russian plot, consider the various examples from the past days and hours: he threatened to “close” the border with Mexico over the humanitarian crisis that he himself created and exacerbated with his immigration policies; his Secretary of DHS wants Congress to allow her to deport unaccompanied children, who are being detained, in an expedited manner–including those seeking asylum; and his State Department has suspended some $500 million in foreign aid to El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras because these countries have not done enough to stop the exodus of migrants. These are the very same countries that Fox News, the official channel of the White House, described this past Sunday as “Three Mexican countries.” 

 

The intensification of what was already a cruel immigration policy by this administration is no accident. 

 

Trump already implemented nefarious measures that continue affecting thousands of people, among them the separation of families at the border, the imprisonment of children and young people in cages, many of whom have been “lost” in the system and continue to be separated from their family members; at least two children, that we know of, who have died in custody of immigration authorities, not to mention those who have allegedly been victims of sexual or physical abuse. 

 

His government is trying to undo the laws of asylum so that Central American migrants who come here, running to save their lives, can no longer apply for refuge in the United States. Upon entry, many migrants are returned to Mexico to await their court date. 

 

According to the Trump administration, this is toward the goal of “deterring” other migrants planning to make the trip north. 

 

But reality is another thing. Trump is not interested in deterring even one migrant. His intention has always been to generate an immigration crisis, in order to exploit it politically and curry favor with his base of supporters. 

 

That is what he did at the end of last year, when he provoked a government shutdown for 35 days, demanding the financing of his border wall that also matters little to him–other than as a device to stir up his base. 

 

The immigration policies of “zero tolerance,” the manipulation of the asylum laws, and other factors have contributed to the chaos that is playing out along the border. That is, Trump creates a crisis so that he can then become the “paladin” of his prejudiced base, offering “solutions” like his wall, closing the border, or “punishing” the countries sending immigrants, taking away funds that ironically are sent to non-governmental agencies trying to stem the violence and systemic poverty that is pushing migrants to leave their countries of origin in the first place. 

 

No one would gladly cross countries, rivers, and deserts with their children in tow just to arrive at the U.S. border, turn themselves in to immigration authorities and solicit asylum, as the law allows, only to then be returned to Mexico like a pariah, or locked up like cattle under a bridge in El Paso, Texas, without any type of accommodations, sleeping out in the open. 

 

There they are exposed to hunger, changes in the weather, illnesses and abuses–including from passers-by shouting expletives, according to press reports. 

 

This is not deterrence. This is cruelty to the nth degree. It is malfeasance, and a shame to this nation that prides itself on defending democratic and humanitarian values. 

 

It is Machiavellian. 

 

And it is a demonstration of the fact that Trump, following the Russiagate investigation, feels invincible, although neither Congress nor those of us who paid for the investigation have seen the final report to know whether, in fact, he is completely free of guilt or there are compelling issues that merit action by Congress. 

 

I suspect that, absent some other big event, we will be witnesses to one of the dirtiest electoral cycles in recent history, because this president is unhinged. He feels vindicated and in possession of a clean slate on which to impose his extremist agenda, aided by his Republican accomplices in Congress. And his followers will do whatever it takes to defend his place for another four years. Heaven help us.
