Grammy winners Ozomatli headline Festival Americas

Durante casi un cuarto de siglo, la banda con sede en Los Ángeles, Ozomatli, ha desafiado las normas de la música latina y superado las expectativas, y este sábado el aclamado grupo de músicos y activistas sociales se presentará en el escenario de Guthrie Green como acto principal en el Festival Americas.

En lo que parece ser una gira interminable, Ozomatli ha cautivado a multitudes en todas partes, desde el Reino Unido hasta Hawai, y este fin de semana le toca a Tulsa levantarse y bailar al ritmo contagioso del grupo.

Ozomatli explica su última grabación como “un álbum de éxitos mexicanos clásicos y contemporáneos reinventado con un toque jamaiquino. Titulado sin escalas: México → Jamaica, rinde homenaje a la música que muchos de los miembros de la banda crecieron escuchando, inspirándolos a reconectarse y reinterpretar canciones que definieron su juventud “.

Formada en Los Ángeles en 1995 y descrita como una “banda multicultural de salsa, merengue, hip-hop y funk”, en 2007 Ozomatli fue nombrada por el departamento de Estado de los Estados Unidos como embajadores culturales, y más tarde actuó para el presidente y la primera dama Barack y Michelle Obama.

For nearly a quarter century the Los Angeles based band Ozomatli has been challenging Latin music norms and exceeding expectations, and this Saturday the acclaimed group of musicians and social activists will grace the stage at Guthrie Green as the headline act at Festival Americas.

On what seems to be a never-ending tour, Ozomatli has wowed crowds everywhere from the UK to Hawaii, and this weekend it’s Tulsa’s turn to get up and dance to the group’s infectious rhythms.

Ozomatli explains its latest recording as “an album of classic and contemporary Mexican hits reimagined with a Jamaican feel. Titled Nonstop: Mexico → Jamaica, it pays homage to the music that many of the band members grew up listening to, inspiring them to reconnect and reinterpret songs that defined their youth.”

Formed in L.A. in 1995 and described as a “multicultural salsa-meringue-hip-hop-funk band,” in 2007 Ozomatli was named by the U.S. State department as cultural ambassadors, and later performed for President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama.

The multiple Grammy Award winning act is also known for its strong sense of social justice and has championed issues ranging from workers’ rights to the fair treatment of immigrants.
