Ley de denuncia de delincuentes sexuales
OKLAHOMA CITY – A partir del 1 de noviembre, los delincuentes sexuales que residen con un niño menor ahora deben presentarse en la línea directa centralizada del departamento de servicios humanos de Oklahoma (DHS). Anteriormente, solo el padre, padrastro o abuelo de un menor tenía que presentarse en la línea directa.
El senador Adam Pugh, republicano de Edmond, redactó el proyecto de ley que ordena la presentación de informes adicionales a pedido del DHS para proteger mejor a todos los niños de Oklahoma.
“Este fue un descuido en nuestra ley que debía abordarse para garantizar que la policía y el DHS sepan con quién viven los delincuentes sexuales cuando se trata de menores”, dijo Pugh. “Dadas las cambiantes relaciones, las circunstancias financieras o de salud, un delincuente sexual puede vivir en varios lugares, pero es importante que las autoridades siempre sepan si hay menores en el hogar. Tener esta información ayudará a estas agencias a proteger mejor a esos jóvenes si surge la necesidad y responsabilizar a los delincuentes sexuales.
Los delincuentes deben presentarse en la lÌnea directa dentro de los tres días posteriores a la mudanza. No informar al DHS es un delito grave que se castiga con uno o tres años en la custodia del departamento de correcciones (DOC).
Según el DOC, actualmente hay 7.050 delincuentes sexuales registrados en el estado.
New sex offender reporting law in effect
OKLAHOMA CITY – As of November 1, sex offenders residing with any minor child must now report to the statewide centralized Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) hotline. Previously, only the parent, stepparent or grandparent of a minor had to report to the hotline.
Sen. Adam Pugh, R-Edmond, authored the bill mandating the additional reporting at the request of DHS to better protect all of Oklahoma’s children.
This was an oversight in our law that needed to be addressed to ensure law enforcement and DHS are aware of who sex offenders are living with when it comes to minors,î Pugh said. ìGiven changing relationships, financial or health circumstances, a sex offender may live in multiple locations but it’s important that the authorities always know if there are minors in the home. Having this information will help these agencies better protect those youth should the need arise and hold sex offenders more accountable.
Offenders are required to report to the hotline within three days of moving. Failing to report to DHS is a felony offense punishable by one to three years in the Department of Corrections’ (DOC) custody.
According to DOC, there are currently 7,050 registered sex offenders in the state.
