Muchos piensan que ser policía es básicamente hacer lo mismo que hacen los agentes en las series de televisión, tirar puertas abajo, perseguir a los malos y pasar un buen rato con la familia al finalizar el día, pero Ricardo Baca nos cuenta que es un trabajo mucho más arduo que eso, requiere estudio, concentración y una responsabilidad que dura toda una vida.

Ricardo Baca es oficial de la oficina del sheriff y miembro del equipo SWAT de la ciudad. Cada día patrulla la ciudad con la división de housing authority en el Este de Tulsa, y cuando lo necesitan ofrece sus servicios como francotirador del especializado equipo de tareas SWAT.

Nacido en Bolivia, Baca habla español con fluidez, y está siempre atento a las necesidades de la comunidad. “Ha habido un cambio recientemente en la ciudad, sentimos que la comunidad hispana se ha abierto”, aseguró el oficial. “Nosotros somos 6 policías en la 21 y Garnett que estamos ahí para servir a la comunidad antes que cualquier otra cosa”, recalcó.

Baca sabe que su trabajo es duro, aunque no muchos lo entiendan. “La responsabilidad es mucha, en esta profesión no tenemos la ventaja de poder equivocarnos, tenemos que estar listos para cualquier cosa y no dudar”, aseguró.

Como miembro del equipo SWAT su misión es registrar las amenazas inmediatas en los lugares en los que están destinados a servir. “Antes de que mi equipo entre a una casa tengo que verificar todos mis puntos débiles, como por ejemplo las ventanas, chequear que no haya nadie armado, para que el equipo este a salvo.

Cuando hay un secuestro, por ejemplo, de un niño y hay armas en el medio, mi y trabajo es parar la amenaza”, dijo con convencimiento. Ser francotirador es una responsabilidad inmensa que requiere años de estudio y práctica, se necesita saber mucha matemática para calcular bien las distancias y tener siempre la mente fría para tomar la decisión correcta. “Yo puedo disparar si veo peligro, no necesito pedir permiso”, dijo Baca, agregando que es capaz de disparar en una longitud de hasta 700 metros.

“Gracias a Dios Tulsa es muy tranquila y nunca ha tenido que tirarle un tiro a nadie, igualmente todo es tensionante, porque tenemos que estar listos por si el momento llega, pero no lo he tenido que hacer”, aseguró.

Ser policía no sólo es un trabajo peligroso, sino también doloroso, se viven emociones fuertes que son difíciles de borrar. “Es muy difícil para mi trabajar cuando hay niños involucrados. Entrar a una casa y ver que hay padres haciendo cosas malas delante de los niños me llega al alma bien fuerte”, reconoció Baca. Pero para reponerse de estas angustias está la fe y el confort de la familia, y “con oración y confianza, todo se soluciona”, dijo el oficial.

A todos los jóvenes de la ciudad Baca les da un único consejo, escuchar más a los adultos para evitar tomar malas decisiones. (La Semana)

Many think that being a police officer is basically doing the same as the agents on any one of a thousand television shows, kicking doors down, chasing the bad guys and having a good time with the family at the end of the day, but Ricardo Baca tells us that it is a much harder job than that, one that requires study, concentration, and a responsibility that lasts a lifetime.

Ricardo Baca is an officer with the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office and a member of the city’s SWAT team. Every day he patrols the city with the housing authority division in East Tulsa, and when needed he offers his services as a sniper for the specialized SWAT team.

A native of Bolivia, Baca speaks Spanish fluently and is always attentive to the needs of the community.

“There has been a change recently in the city, we feel that the Hispanic community has opened up,” Baca said. “There are six law enforcement officers at 21 and Garnett who are there to serve the community before anything else.”

Baca knows that his work is hard, although not many understand it.
“The responsibility is great, because in this profession we don’t have the advantage of being wrong, we have to be ready for anything and not doubt ourselves,” he said.

As a member of the SWAT team the mission is to register immediate threats in the places where they are intended to serve.

“Before my team enters a house I have to check all my weak points, such as windows, check that no one is armed, so that everyone is safe. When there is a kidnapping of a child, for example, and there are weapons involved, my job is to stop the threat,” he said with conviction.

Being a sniper is a huge responsibility that requires years of study and practice, you need to know a lot of math to calculate distances well and always have a cold mind to make the right decision.

“I can shoot if I see danger, I don’t need to ask for permission,” Baca said, adding that he is capable of shooting at a distance of up to 700 meters.

“Thank God Tulsa is very calm and I’ve never had to shoot anyone,” he said, “but everything is still very stressful, because we have to be ready in case the time comes. But I have not had to do it.”

Law enforcement is not only dangerous work, but also painful, eliciting strong emotions are lived that are difficult to erase.

“It is very difficult for me to work when there are children involved. Entering a house and seeing that there are parents doing bad things in front of children reaches my soul very strong,” Baca acknowledged.

But helping Baca recover from these anxieties is the faith and comfort of the family, and “with prayer and trust, everything is solved,” said the sniper.

To all the young people in the city, Baca, gives only one piece of advice, to listen more to adults to avoid making bad decisions. (La Semana)
