Drums of war amid Trump’s impeachment trial

Los tambores de guerra contra Irán los toca alguien que evadió el servicio militar en Vietnam diciendo que sufría de espolones: Donald Trump. Ni siquiera objetor de conciencia; simplemente espolones, como su mejor artimaña para encubrir su notoria cobardía de juventud. Es el mismo individuo que ordena la deportación de la madre indocumentada de un militar hispano, a pesar de haber vivido y pagado impuestos en este país durante 31 años y ser una pequeña empresaria.

Una madre hispana, Rocío Rebollar Gómez, a la que sus padres no le dieron “millones de dólares” para ganarse la vida haciendo negocios turbios, sino una mujer que supo entender desde el principio el significado del sacrificio por ser útil a esta nación en diversos frentes, ahora mismo sufriendo una deportación y una angustia por saber que su hijo podría estar entre los enviados hacia una guerra inútil. Algo que Trump ni siquiera entiende y mucho menos le importa.

Es decir, el evasor deporta a la madre de un militar hispano en servicio activo, el teniente Segundo de Inteligencia, Gibram Cruz, quien ha demostrado más valor y amor a este país que un presidente que, para desviar la atención del proceso de juicio político que enfrenta, ordena la muerte de un alto militar iraní, el comandante de la Guardia Revolucionaria, Qasem Soleimani.

La “inminencia” de la amenaza que representaba Soleimani no queda clara, como tampoco queda claro por qué, eliminado el militar, Trump tiene que acudir a Twitter para amenazar a Irán con destruirle 52 objetivos si intenta tomar represalias contra Estados Unidos.

Lo irónico es que ahora Trump argumenta que la decisión se basó en reportes de “inteligencia”, la misma inteligencia que él mismo ha desmoralizado, insultado y minimizado cuando sus miembros reportaron la intervención rusa en las elecciones presidenciales de 2016, cuando él resultó el beneficiado por dicha intervención. Pero su juego de bobos solo convence a su entorno, sin tomar en cuenta lo evidente que resulta su actual ardid contra Irán, sin dar pruebas que justifiquen el ataque a un “enemigo” del que no se tenía la menor noticia.

Y Trump argumenta “seguridad nacional” cuando poco le ha importado que Rusia se inmiscuya en nuestro proceso electoral. Más bien defiende a Rusia y a Vladimir Putin, y tanto él como sus secuaces diseminan información falsa como la de que fue Ucrania la que intervino en nuestros comicios.

Cuando suenan los tambores de guerra se eriza la piel no de miedo, sino de rabia, al pensar cómo los políticos toman decisiones basadas en sacrificar las vidas de otros, aposentados en su cómoda curul, con sus ingresos asegurados, con prebendas por impulsar este o aquel proyecto de ley que no responde a necesidades sociales, sino a intereses particulares de multinacionales o de “los señores de la guerra”. Es cierto que los militares siguen órdenes, pero obviamente no serán los hijos ni los familiares de Trump los que se envíen a un teatro de guerra. Deberían ser los primeros.

Serán sin duda los hijos y nietos de ese sector que lo defiende ciegamente y que como son tan ciegos, sentirán que es “un honor” seguir las órdenes de quien quizá sea el Comandante en Jefe de las Fuerzas Armadas más inepto en la historia moderna de este país. Lo ha demostrado con creces y será difícil que alguien lo supere viendo estos ejemplos de su ineptitud.

Y, lamentablemente, entre los que sirvan también estarán los hispanos que Trump tanto ha vapuleado durante esta tormentosa presidencia.

Hispanos como Gibram Cruz, cuya madre deportada quisiera que se detuvieran las horas para que eso no ocurra, mientras piensa qué hacer para enfrentar su nueva situación en una ciudad como Tijuana, donde a nadie conoce ni tiene idea de cómo empezar de nuevo con su vida y su doloroso presente.

Es cierto que los militares siguen las órdenes de su Comandante en Jefe. Pero es duro justificarlo cuando ese Comandante en Jefe es un ser errático que lo menos que siente es amor patrio, porque todo, incluyendo sus decisiones militares, se toman de acuerdo con lo que le convenga a él y no al país. Sobre todo si se trata de desviar la atención de su juicio de destitución.

Arranca así de forma dramática un año electoral que definirá lo que somos como nación, sobre todo si Trump es reelecto y este caos continúa. (America’s Voice)

He is the same individual who ordered the deportation of the undocumented mother of a Hispanic serviceman, despite having lived and paid taxes in this country for 31 years and being a small businesswoman.

A Hispanic mother, Rocío Rebollar Gómez, whose parents did not give “millions of dollars” to make a living doing shady business, but a woman who from the beginning understood the meaning of sacrifice of being useful to this nation in various fronts, right now suffering deportation and anguish to know that her son could be among those sent to a useless war. This kind of sacrifice is something Trump doesn’t even understand and about which he cares even less.

And so the draft dodger deports the mother of an active-duty Hispanic military officer, Second Intelligence Lieutenant Gibram Cruz, who has shown more courage and love to this country than a president who, to divert attention from the political trial process he is facing, orders the death of a senior Iranian military officer, the commander of the Revolutionary Guard, Qasem Soleimani.

The “imminence” of the threat that Soleimani represented is not clear, nor is it clear why, once the military leader was eliminated, Trump had to go to Twitter to threaten Iran with destroying 52 targets if it tries to retaliate against the United States.

Ironically, Trump now argues that the decision was based on “intelligence reports,” the same intelligence that he himself has demoralized, insulted and minimized when his own agents reported Russian intervention in the 2016 presidential election, when he was the beneficiary of such intervention. But his game of fools only convinces his base, without taking into account the obvious that is his current scheme against Iran, without giving evidence to justify the attack on an “enemy” of which there was no news.

And Trump argues “national security” when he has hardly cared about Russia interfering in our electoral process. Rather, he defends Russia and Vladimir Putin, and he and his henchmen disseminate false information such as that it was Ukraine that intervened in our elections.

When the drums of war sound, the skin bristles, not from fear, but from rage, when thinking how politicians make decisions based on sacrificing the lives of others, sitting in their comfortable seats, with their incomes secured, with pretensions to boost this or that bill that does not respond to social needs, but catering to the particular interests of multinationals or “warlords.” It is true that the military follows orders, but obviously it will not be Trump’s children or relatives who are sent to a theater of war. They should be the first.

They will undoubtedly be the children and grandchildren of those that defend him blindly and that since they are so blind, they will feel that it is “an honor” to follow the orders of the person who may be the most inept Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces in the modern history of this country. He has proved it by far and it will be difficult for someone to overcome it by seeing these examples of his ineptitude.

And, unfortunately, among those who serve will also be the Hispanics that Trump has beaten up so much during this stormy presidency.

Hispanics like Gibram Cruz, whose deported mother would like to stop time so that it doesn’t happen, while thinking what to do to face her new situation in a city like Tijuana, where she knows nobody or has any idea how to start over with her life and her painful circumstance.

It is true that the military follows the orders of its Commander in Chief. But it is hard to justify doing so when that Commander in Chief is an erratic being who feels no patriotic love, because every decision, including his military decisions, is made according to what suits him and not the country. Especially if it is to divert attention from his impeachment trial.

Thus dramatically begins an election year that will define who we are as a nation, especially if Trump is reelected and this chaos continues. (America’s Voice)
