The search for a new police chief continues

La búsqueda del próximo jefe de policía de Tulsa continuó la semana pasada en una reunión especial entre el alcalde G.T. Bynum y los líderes hispanos de la ciudad.

El evento fue organizado por Vicente Ruiz y el consejo para vecindarios seguros y tuvo lugar en el restaurante Speedy Gonzales en South Memorial Drive.

“Estamos pasando por el proceso en este momento de contratar a un nuevo jefe de policía”, dijo el alcalde a La Semana. “Es muy importante para mí que quienquiera que sea, esté involucrado personal y directamente con la comunidad hispana en Tulsa, y que la comunidad hispana sienta que ese jefe es muy accesible y puede acudir a él con cualquier preocupación que tengan”.

Bynum señaló que actualmente hay siete candidatos de las filas del departamento de policía de Tulsa que han solicitado el puesto de jefe, y dijo que los entrevistará en los próximos días.

“Pero antes de hacer eso, quería reunirme con algunos de los líderes de la comunidad hispana y escuchar lo que esperan ver de este nuevo jefe antes de entrevistar a cualquiera de los candidatos”, dijo el alcalde. “Y eso es lo que me trae aquí hoy”.

Los asistentes dijeron que les gustaría ver más diversidad en la fuerza, pero no tenían una prueba de fuego étnico para el nuevo líder del TPD.

Bynum dijo que la seguridad pública es muy importante para él y que quiere que todos los residentes de Tulsa, independientemente de su estado migratorio, lo sepan.

“Queremos que todos los que están aquí estén seguros, especialmente de la violencia, y eso es algo en lo que realmente hemos tratado de concentrarnos en reducir en los últimos años aquí en Tulsa”. (La Semana)

The search for Tulsa’s next chief of police continued last week in a special meeting between Mayor G.T. Bynum and the city’s Hispanic leaders.

The event was organized by Vicente Ruiz and the Council for Safe Neighborhoods and took place at Speedy Gonzales restaurant on South Memorial Drive.

“We’re going through the process right now of hiring a new police chief,” the mayor told La Semana. “It’s very important to me that whoever that is, is personally and directly engaged with the Hispanic community in Tulsa, and that the Hispanic community feels that that chief is very approachable and can go to him with any concerns they have.”

Bynum pointed out that there are currently seven candidates from within the ranks of the Tulsa Police Department who have applied for the job of chief, and said he will be interviewing them in the days to come.

“But before we do that, I wanted to come meet with some of the leaders in the Hispanic community and hear what they’re hoping to see from this new Chief before I interview any of the candidates,” the mayor said. “And so that’s what brings me here today.”

Those in attendance said they would like to see more diversity on the force, but had no ethnic litmus test for the TPD’s new leader.

Bynum said public safety is very important to him, and he wants every Tulsa resident, regardless of their immigration status, to know that.

“We want everyone who’s here to be safe, especially from violence, and that’s something we’ve really tried to focus on reducing in the last few years here in Tulsa.” (La Semana)
