El 7 de febrero se inauguró una nueva exposición en Tulsa Living Arts con obras de numerosos artistas locales, entre ellos el pintor argentino Gabriel Rojas. Remember Artist Showcase “está destinado a resaltar los talentos únicos que se encuentran dentro de la comunidad de Artes de Tulsa”, afirma el sitio web Living Arts, y Rojas es ciertamente uno de aquellos cuyos talentos están haciendo de la ciudad un faro en el mundo del arte.

Los que han seguido la carrera de Rojas durante los últimos años saben que el trabajo del artista está en constante evolución, haciendo uso de diferentes medios al tiempo que refleja sus cambiantes experiencias de vida. La Semana le preguntó a Rojas si podía caracterizar sus contribuciones a Remember Artist Showcase.

“Soy un pintor de procesos”, explicó. “Experimento con técnicas y gestos, por lo que esto es mezclar técnicas expresionistas abstractas gestuales con diseños geométricos. Es como buscar un equilibrio entre esos diferentes elementos visuales “.

Rojas dijo que no comienza una nueva pieza o serie con ningún mensaje o idea preconcebida, sino que deja que el arte se desarrolle orgánicamente.

“Como dije, es un proceso, por lo que es como un rompecabezas para mí”, dijo Rojas, “voy creando estos rompecabezas para resolverlos y a través de procesos puedo aprender más sobre el medio y sobre mí mismo. Se trata de descubrir el proceso”.

Rojas agrega que se inspira en una variedad de artistas diferentes, algunos de los más conocidos son Wassily Kandindsky y Pablo Picasso. Pero sus intereses se extienden más allá de los maestros establecidos
“Michael Williams es un pintor contemporáneo que realmente disfruto”, añadió.

Rojas dice que este es un buen momento para las artes en Tulsa.

“Creo que es un gran lugar para los artistas locales, añade Rojas. Los tulsanos realmente apoyan las artes y hay una creciente comunidad”.

Rojas asegura que exposiciones como Remember Artist Showcase son algunas de las razones por las cuales existe un renacimiento en el mundo del arte de Tulsa.

“Siempre hay un mercado para artistas locales, y Living Arts está apoyando esta exhibición”, dijo.

2020 promete ser un año ajetreado para Rojas, cuyo trabajo será presentado en una próxima exposición llamada “We Are All Related” en Liggett Studios a partir del 14 de febrero, así como el show de “Instincts” en el Thomas K. Mckeon Center for Creativity de TCC a partir del 27 de abril.

“También haré un mural en abril para el Habit Mural Festival”, dijo Rojas. “Eso es todo por ahora, pero veremos qué pasa este año”.

Gabriel Rojas discusses Tulsa’s thriving art world

A new exhibition opened at Tulsa’s Living Arts on February 7 featuring the works of numerous local artists, including Argentina born painter Gabriel Rojas. Remember Artist Showcase “is intended to highlight the unique talents found within the Tulsa Arts community,” Living Arts’ website states, and Rojas is certainly among those whose talents are making the city a beacon in the art world.

Those who have followed Rojas’ career over the past several years know that the artist’s work is constantly evolving, making use of different media while reflecting his changing life experiences. La Semana asked Rojas if he could characterize his contributions to the Remember Artist Showcase.

“I’m a process painter,” he explained. “I experiment with techniques and gestures, and so this serious is mixing gestural abstract expressionist techniques with geometric designs. It’s kind of looking for a balance between those different visual elements.”

Rojas said he doesn’t start on a new piece or series with any preconceived message or idea, but rather lets the art develop organically.

“Like I said, it’s a process, so it’s like a puzzle to me,” Rojas said, “and I’m creating these puzzles to solve and through processes I can learn more about the medium and about myself. It’s about discovering the process.”

Rojas said he draws inspiration from a variety of different artists, some of the better known being Wassily Kandindsky and Pablo Picasso. But his interests extend far beyond the established masters.

“Michael Williams is a contemporary painter I really enjoy,” he said.
Rojas said this is a good time for the arts in Tulsa.

“I think it’s a great place for local artists,” Rojas said. “[Tulsans] really support the arts and there’s a growing artistic community.”

Rojas said exhibitions such as Remember Artist Showcase are among the reasons why there is such as renaissance in the Tulsa art world.

“There’s always a market for local artists, and Living Arts is supporting this exhibit,” he said.

2020 promises to be a busy year for Rojas, whose work will be featured in an upcoming exhibit called “We Are All Related” at Liggett Studios beginning February 14, as well as the “Instincts” show at TCC’s Thomas K. McKeon Center for Creativity beginning April 27.

“I will also be doing a mural in April for the Habit Mural Festival,” Rojas said. “That’s it for now, but we’ll see what happens this year.”
