Tulsa tendrá un nuevo museo Gilcrease / Tulsa to get a new Gilcrease Museum

Los tulsanos pronto diran adios al museo Gilcrease que han conocido y amado durante décadas y, dentro de unos cuatro años, daran la bienvenida a un nuevo Gilcrease en el mismo lugar.

Un análisis realizado por la firma internacional de arquitectura SmithGroup recomendó que agregar una quinta estructura al complejo existente de edificios conectados que fueron construídos entre 1913 y 1987 sería insuficiente para satisfacer las necesidades del museo o los estándares modernos. La solución, aunque bastante dramática, es demoler la estructura actual y reemplazarla con un edificio moderno que, según los funcionarios de la ciudad, “brindará un mayor espacio en la galería para mostrar más de la colección Gilcrease, albergará exposiciones itinerantes y garantizar una mejor preservación del invaluable arte, artefactos y documentos del museo”.

“Este nuevo modelo del museo Gilcrease garantizará más espacio de exhibición y también lugar para exhibiciones ambulantes mientras protege las colecciones del museo Gilcrease en las próximas décadas”, dijo el alcalde de Tulsa G.T. Bynum. “En lugar de realizar mejoras incrementales en una estructura existente, la nueva instalación podrá maximizar las ofertas de nuestro museo y crear un espacio completo, tanto en interiores como en exteriores, que coincida con la verdadera visión del museo Gilcrease”.

Se tardará unos cuatro años en diseñar y construir el nuevo museo, tiempo durante el cual Gilcrease trabajará con otras instituciones para llevar a cabo la programación fuera del sitio.

Tulsa to get a new Gilcrease Museum

Tulsans will soon be saying goodbye to the Gilcrease Museum they have known and loved for decades and, about four years from now, will say hello to a brand new Gilcrease on the same site.

An analysis by the international architecture firm SmithGroup recommended that adding a fifth structure onto the existing complex of connected buildings constructed between 1913 and 1987 would be insufficient to meet the needs of the museum or modern standards. The solution, albeit a rather dramatic one, is to demolish the current structure and replace it with modern building that, according to city officials, “will deliver increased gallery space to show more of the Gilcrease collection, accommodate exciting traveling exhibitions and ensure best-in-class preservation of the museum’s invaluable art, artifacts and documents.”

“This new direction for Gilcrease Museum will ensure more exhibit space and room for traveling exhibits while safeguarding Gilcrease Museum’s collections for decades to come,” Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum said. “Instead of making incremental improvements to an existing structure, the new facility will be able to maximize our museum offerings and create a full museum space both indoors and outdoors that match the true vision of Gilcrease Museum.”

It will take about four years to design and build the new museum, during which time the museum will work with other institutions to conduct off-site programming.

Thanks largely to the Vision Tulsa tax package, funding is already place for this major project, but private donations are also being sought to make Gilcrease the truly world class facility that its unique collection warrants. (La Semana)
