Fundación Mita celebra gala anual / Mita’s Foundation holds annual gala

Mientras la ciudad se preparaba para un cierre importante, los partidarios de la Fundación Mita se reunieron el sábado por la noche para lo que resultaría ser el último evento público que la comunidad latina de Tulsa verá durante quizás varios meses por venir. Con la actual crisis de salud en mente, se tomaron precauciones adicionales para asegurarse de que el evento fuera tan seguro como agradable.

La Fundación Mita ayuda a niños desfavorecidos en Perú, y cada año organiza una gala para recaudar fondos y honrar a aquellos que dan de sí mismos para hacer de Tulsa un lugar mejor, especialmente para la creciente comunidad inmigrante de la ciudad.

Los galardonados con el Orgullo Hispano el sábado por la noche fueron Monica Blendowski de la oficina del sheriff del condado de Tulsa, Daniel Chaboya del Tulsa Community College, Elian Hurtado-Jarve de Tulsa Habitat for Humanity y Rodrigo Rojas del Gathering Place.

“Soy un inmigrante, eso es lo que soy primero”, dijo Hurtado-Jarve, nativo de Venezuela, después de aceptar su premio. “Vine a este país hace 24 años sin saber inglés, y estoy orgulloso de mi posición actual.

Hurtado-Jarve enfatizó la importancia de que los inmigrantes mantengan viva su cultura, pero dijo que tiene un fuerte vínculo con su ciudad adoptiva.

“Amo a Tulsa, mi querida Tulsa”, dijo. “Esta ciudad se ha metido en mis venas y en mi corazón”.

Rojas, quien antes de convertirse en director de relaciones con la comunidad en Gathering Place fue director de desarrollo y comunicaciones en Teach For America y director de operaciones en La Semana, agradeció a su familia, a sus compañeros de trabajo y a las muchas organizaciones en Tulsa que “me han dado oportunidad de trabajar junto a ellos y la oportunidad de colaborar juntos para crear realmente la comunidad que queremos: una comunidad hispana próspera para la próxima generación “.

Mita’s Foundation holds annual gala

As the city poised for a major shutdown, supporters of Mita’s Foundation gathered Saturday night for what would prove to be the last public event Tulsa’s Latinx community will see for perhaps several months to come. With the current health crisis in mind, extra precautions were taken to make sure the event was as safe as it was enjoyable.

Mita’s Foundation helps underprivileged children in Peru, and each year hosts a gala to raise funds and to honor those who give of themselves to make Tulsa a better place, especially for the city’s growing immigrant community.

Orgullo Hispano Award Honorees recognized Saturday night were Monica Blendowski of the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office, Daniel Chaboya of Tulsa Community College, Elian Hurtado-Jarve of Tulsa Habitat for Humanity, and Rodrigo Rojas of Gathering Place.

“I am an immigrant, that’s who I am first,” Hurtado-Jarve, a native of Venezuela, said after accepting her award. “I came to this country 24 years ago knowing no English, and I’m proud of where I’m standing today.

Hurtado-Jarve stressed the importance of immigrants keeping their culture alive, but she said she has a strong bond with her adopted city.

“I love Tulsa, my dear Tulsa,” she said. “This city has gotten into my veins and into my heart.”

Rojas, who before becoming Director of Community Relations at Gathering Place was the Director of Development and Communications at Teach For America and Director of Operations at La Semana, thanked his family, his coworkers, and the many organizations in Tulsa that “have given me the opportunity to work alongside them and the opportunity to collaborate together to really create the community that we want – a thriving Hispanic community for the next generation.”
