Estudiante de TCC recibe beca Goldwater Scholar / TCC student named Goldwater Scholar

TULSA, OK – Justice Robinson, estudiante de Tulsa Community College (TCC), ha sido nombrada Becaria Goldwater 2020 por la Fundación Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education. Robinson, estudiante de biología, es el primer estudiante de TCC en recibir esta prestigiosa beca de $ 15K dividido entre dos años de estudio.

“Todavía estoy realmente conmocionada y orgullosa de representar a Tulsa Community College. Soy una estudiante no tradicional que tuvo una brecha de seis años desde la escuela secundaria hasta la universidad, así que soy mayor que la mayoría de mis compañeros “, dijo Robinson.

A los 26 años, se graduará en mayo con su título de asociada y planea continuar su educación en Neurociencia. Su plan final es obtener un Ph.D. y llevar a cabo investigaciones en neurobiología, para entender los cambios en el cerebro.

La beca Barry Goldwater es la beca de pregrado más prestigiosa para las ciencias naturales, matemáticas e ingeniería en América y se concede a estudiantes de segundo y tercer año que muestran una promesa excepcional de convertirse en la próxima generación de líderes de investigación en estos campos de nuestra nación.

“Desde el primer día del curso de introducción a la biología y su primer semestre en la universidad, Justice supo que quería estudiar neurociencia”, dijo Melissa Masse, profesora asociada de biología de TCC. “Incluso desde ese momento, ella era muy específica y articulada. Se ha enfrentado a muchos desafíos y, mientras que otros podrían haberse retrasado, ella no lo hizo. Justice es impulsada por ella misma y su éxito es inspirador para otros.”

Robinson acredita a la facultad de TCC y al apoyo académico de Melissa Masse, Neil Enis, Diana Spencer con su éxito. Ella cree que la tutoría que recibió en TCC junto con la capacidad de trabajar en el programa de Biotecnología haciendo investigación de pregrado y presentando su investigación le han ayudado a su éxito académico.

“Estoy súper agradecida con TCC y el aliento y aceptación de los profesores y mentores de Honor. Ellos se aseguraron de que yo supiera que mi aprendizaje estaba bien por mí misma y cuando tuve dudas, estaban allí para alentarme”, dijo Robinson.

Robinson es uno de los cinco Goldwater Scholars seleccionados de Oklahoma y uno de los 396 seleccionados de todo el país.

TCC student named Goldwater Scholar

TULSA, OK — Justice Robinson, a Tulsa Community College (TCC) student, has been named a 2020 Goldwater Scholar by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. Robinson, a Biology major, is the first TCC student to receive this prestigious scholarship that is up to $15K split between two years of study.

“I am still really shocked and proud to represent Tulsa Community College. I am a non-traditional student who had a six-year gap from high school to college, so I am older than most of my peers,” said Robinson
At 26, she will graduate in May with her associate degree and plans to continue her education in Neuroscience. Her ultimate plan is to earn a Ph.D. and conduct research in neurobiology, to understand changes in the brain.

“It was my own experiences and challenges in making the transition from high school to adulthood that sparked my interest in understanding what happens to your brain,” Robinson said. “Despite my family situation being a bit of a mess, I am focused on my goal and school has kept me grounded giving me control of my own future. It is a motivator for me instead of a deterrent.”

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship is the most prestigious undergraduate scholarship for the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering in America and is awarded to sophomores and juniors who show exceptional promise of becoming our nation’s next generation of research leaders in these fields.

“From the first day in my Introductory to Biology course and her first semester in college, Justice knew she wanted to study neuroscience,” said Melissa Masse, TCC Associate Professor of Biology. “Even then, she was so specific and so articulate. She has faced many challenges and, while others might have been held back, she is not. She is propelled forward by it and her success is inspiring to others.”

Robinson credits TCC faculty Melissa Masse, Neil Enis, Diana Spencer with her success. She believes the mentorship she received at TCC along with the ability to work in the Biotechnology program doing undergraduate research and presenting her research has helped her academic success.

“I am super grateful for TCC and the encouragement and acceptance from Honors faculty and mentors. They made sure I knew it was okay to by myself and when I faced self-doubt, they were there to encourage me,” said Robinson.

Robinson is one of five Goldwater Scholars selected from Oklahoma and one of 396 selected from across the country.

The Scholarship Program honoring Senator Barry Goldwater was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue research careers in the fields of the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics.
