El coronavirus no ha sido derrotado. Todo lo contrario.

“Lo peor está por venir”, dijo este lunes el director general de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, al hablar de la atmósfera de división política global y de fracturas a nivel político que dificultan el combate de la pandemia.

“Con este tipo de ambiente y condiciones, tememos lo peor”, agregó.
“Han pasado seis meses del brote del nuevo coronavirus y la pandemia está lejos de haberse acabado”, dijo.

La cifra de muertes en todo el mundo supera el medio millón, y los casos, los diez millones en los seis primeros meses, momento que la OMS quiere aprovechar para volver a reforzar la atención para salvar vidas.

“Hace seis meses nadie podría haber imaginado cómo nuestro mundo – y nuestras vidas- cambiarían tanto con este nuevo virus”, dijo el jefe de la OMS.

“Aunque muchos países han hecho progresos, globalmente la pandemia se está acelerando”, alertó. “La mayor parte de la gente aún es susceptible (de contagiarse); el virus aún tiene mucho espacio por donde moverse”.

La mitad de los contagios del mundo se han registrado en Estados Unidos y Europa, pero el número de contagios está creciendo rápidamente en toda América.

En América Latina el ritmo de nuevas infecciones se ha acelerado desde mediados de mayo, y está aumentando especialmente en Brasil, México y Chile, según la OMS.

Tedros remarcó la importancia del rastreo de contactos de las personas contagiadas y anunció que un equipo de la OMS viajará a China la próxima semana para investigar el origen del virus, algo que le reclamaba Estados Unidos, cuyo gobierno ha sido muy crítico con la organización hasta el punto de suspender la financiación y de anunciar la salida del ente.

El director del programa de emergencias de la OMS, Mike Ryan, dijo que ha habido progresos en el trabajo para encontrar una vacuna, pero que no hay garantías de que sea un éxito.

Six months since the new coronavirus outbreak, the pandemic is still far from over, the World Health Organization says, warning that “the worst is yet to come.”

Reaching the half-year milestone just as the death toll surpassed 500,000 and the number of confirmed infections topped 10 million, the WHO says it was a moment to recommit to the fight to save lives.

“Six months ago, none of us could have imagined how our world — and our lives — would be thrown into turmoil by this new virus,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus tells a virtual briefing.

We all want this to be over. We all want to get on with our lives. But the hard reality is this is not even close to being over.”

“Although many countries have made some progress, globally the pandemic is actually speeding up.

“We’re all in this together, and we’re all in this for the long haul.
“We will need even greater stores of resilience, patience, humility and generosity in the months ahead.

“We have already lost so much — but we cannot lose hope.”

Tedros also says that the pandemic had brought out the best and worst humanity, citing acts of kindness and solidarity, but also misinformation and the politicization of the virus.

In an atmosphere of global political division and fractures on a national level, “the worst is yet to come. I’m sorry to say that,” he says.

“With this kind of environment and condition, we fear the worst.”
