Los demócratas hicieron historia el lunes por la noche al iniciar la primera convención política casi virtual de la nación. Lo que originalmente tenía la intención de ser una gran reunión de delegados y luminarias del partido de todo el país para nominar formalmente a Joe Biden a la cima de la lista presidencial demócrata se reformuló debido a la pandemia de coronavirus en un evento que, aunque muy pulido y lleno de discursos cargados de emociones, a veces parecía más un teletón de caridad que una convención nacional del partido.

La primera de las cuatro noches de la convención nacional demócrata de 2020 fue moderada por la actriz y activista Eva Longoria, quien presentó a un grupo diverso de oradores -incluidos muchos de los opositores del ex vicepresidente a la nominación- y sus mensajes pregrabados de apoyo a Biden.

La primera parte de la noche fue dedicada en gran medida al movimiento Black Lives Matter y contó con comentarios y un momento de silencio dirigido por los hermanos de George Floyd, el hombre afroamericano que murió a manos de la policía de Minneapolis a principios de este año y cuyo asesinato provocó una ola de indignación nacional que continúa hasta el día de hoy.

Pero sin duda, los dos discursos más importantes de la noche los dieron el ex rival presidencial de Biden, Bernie Sanders, y la ex primera dama Michelle Obama. Sanders imploró a sus seguidores que se presentaran a las urnas y votaran por Biden.

Al advertir que el futuro de nuestra democracia, nuestra economía e incluso nuestro planeta está en juego, Sanders dijo: “Debemos unirnos, derrotar a Donald Trump y elegir a Joe Biden y Kamala Harris como nuestro próximo presidente y vicepresidente. Amigos míos, el precio del fracaso es demasiado grande para imaginarlo”.

Como lo hizo en la convención nacional demócrata de 2016, la querida Michelle Obama del partido pronunció un conmovedor discurso de unidad y un llamado a la acción entre los votantes, esta vez dando el paso inusual de criticar directa y duramente al presidente en funciones.

“Donald Trump es el presidente equivocado para nuestro país”, dijo la ex primera dama. “Ha tenido tiempo más que suficiente para demostrar que puede hacer el trabajo, pero está claro que está por encima de su cabeza. No puede afrontar este momento. Simplemente no puede ser quien necesitamos que sea para nosotros. Es lo que es”.

La convención continuará hasta el jueves por la noche, cuando Joe Biden y Kamala Harris aceptarán oficialmente la nominación del partido demócrata para presidente y vicepresidente de Estados Unidos. (La Semana)

Democrats launch first virtual convention

Democrats made history Monday night as they kicked off the nation’s first ever mostly virtual political convention. What had originally been intended to be a large gathering of delegates and party luminaries from across the nation to formally nominate Joe Biden to the top of the Democratic presidential ticket was re-shaped due to the coronavirus pandemic into an event that, while highly polished and full of emotionally charged speeches, at times looked more like a charity telethon than a national party convention.

The first of four nights of the 2020 Democratic National Convention was moderated by actress and activist Eva Longoria, who introduced a diverse group of speakers — including many of the former vice president’s opponents for the nomination — and their pre-recorded messages of support for Biden.

The first part of the evening was largely dedicated to the Black Lives Matter movement and featured remarks from and a moment of silence led by the brothers of George Floyd, the African-American man who died at the hands of Minneapolis police earlier this year and whose murder sparked a wave of national outrage that continues to this day.

Prominent Republicans including former Ohio governor John Kasich and former New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman urged members of their own party to vote for Biden over Trump for the good of the country.

But undoubtedly the two most important speeches of the night were given by Biden’s former presidential rival Bernie Sanders and former First Lady Michelle Obama. Sanders implored his supporters to show up at the polls and vote for Biden.

Warning that the future of our democracy, our economy, and even our planet is it stake, Sanders said, “We must come together, defeat Donald Trump and elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as our next president and vice president. My friends, the price of failure is just too great to imagine.”

As she did at the 2016 Democratic national convention, the party’s beloved Michelle Obama delivered a stirring speech of unity and a call to action among voters, this time taking the unusual step of directly and sharply criticizing the sitting president.

“Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country,” The former first lady said. “He has had more than enough time to prove that he can do the job, but he is clearly in over his head. He cannot meet this moment. He simply cannot be who we need him to be for us. It is what it is.”

The convention will continue through Thursday night, when Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will officially accept the Democratic Party’s nomination for president and vice president of the United States. (La Semana)
