Mes de la Herencia Hispana en la biblioteca de Tulsa / Hispanic Heritage Month at the Tulsa Library

En un momento en que muchas de las noticias son malas, es importante celebrar siempre que sea posible, y no hay mejor razón que celebrar nuestra cultura y tradiciones. El Mes de la Herencia Hispana comenzó esta semana, y la biblioteca del condado de Tulsa (TCCL) está organizando una fiesta virtual de un mes con mucha diversión, entretenimiento y eventos educativos en línea para toda la familia.

La Semana visitó a Amairani Pérez, coordinadora del centro de recursos hispanos de TCCL, quien compartió algunas de las formas en que la biblioteca está ayudando a los habitantes de Tulsa a entrar en el espíritu de celebración durante las próximas cuatro semanas.

“Será a partir del 16 de septiembre, cuando lancemos nuestra primera serie”, explicó Pérez. “Va a ser un podcast llamado ‘Historias de lo desconocido’ e invitamos a la comunidad a unirse a una conversación en la que compartiremos historias sobre lo paranormal y lo oculto y otras historias extrañas. Es una especie de tributo a un programa de televisión mexicano llamado ‘La mano peluda’ “.

Pérez reconoció que los eventos de este año son necesariamente diferentes de algunas de las formas en que la biblioteca ha celebrado el Mes de la Herencia Hispana en el pasado, pero dijo que se ha invertido mucho pensamiento y esfuerzo en hacer que la experiencia sea divertida y gratificante para los usuarios de la biblioteca y otros interesado en aprender más sobre la cultura hispana.

“Aunque es virtual, sigue siendo una gran oportunidad para que se relacionen con otros miembros de la comunidad y escuchen algunos eventos realmente emocionantes”, dijo Pérez. “Así que espero que se unan a nosotros este año para todos nuestros programas virtuales. Estoy muy emocionado por eso “.

Otros eventos incluyen un Tea Workshop con Edgar Fabián Frías el sábado 26 de septiembre de 6 a 7 pm, una presentación multimedia colaborativa transmitida en vivo con Ahimsa Timoteo Bodhrán, Welana Queton, Yvette Wiley y José Emmanuel Vega el sábado 3 de octubre de 4 a 5 pm, un Diálogo de Identidad Latinx con la pregunta “¿Qué significa identificarse como hispano, latino o latinx?” El sábado 10 de octubre de 6 a 7 pm, y una serie de manualidades Latinx del martes 27 de octubre al jueves, 29 de octubre a las 6-7 pm.

Hispanic Heritage Month at the Tulsa Library

At a time when so much of the news is bad news, it’s important to celebrate whenever possible, and there isn’t any better reason than celebrating your culture and traditions. Hispanic Heritage Month began this week, and the Tulsa City County Library (TCCL) is throwing a month-long virtual party with lots of fun, entertaining, and educational online events for the whole family.

La Semana visited with Amairani Perez, TCCL’s Hispanic Resource Center Coordinator, who shared some of the ways the library is helping Tulsans get into the celebratory spirit over the next four weeks.

“It’s going to be starting September 16^th, when we launch our first series,” Perez explained. “It’s going to be a podcast called ‘Stories of the Unknown’ and we’re inviting the community to join in on a conversation where we will be sharing stories of the paranormal and the occult and other strange stories. It’s kind of a tribute to a Mexican TV show that used air called ‘The Hairy Hand.’”

Up next is a real treat for book lovers, an online conversation with renowned Mexican-born author Valeria Luiselli on Saturday, Sept. 19 from 5-6 p.m. The livestream reading and discussion will be available at www.facebook.com/tulsalibrary. Luiselli is the author of such books as Lost Children Archive and The Story of My Teeth. Perez acknowledged that the events this year are necessarily different from some of the ways the library has celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month in the past, but she said a lot of thought and effort has gone into making the experience both fun and rewarding for library patrons and others interested in learning more about Hispanic culture.

“Even though it’s virtual, it’s still a really great opportunity for them to engage with other community members and to listen in on some really exciting events,” Perez said. “So I hope that they will join us this year for all of our virtual programs. I’m really excited for it.”

Other events include a Tea Workshop with Edgar Fabián Frías on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 6-7 p.m., a livestreamed collaborative multimedia performance with Ahimsa Timoteo Bodhrán, Welana Queton, Yvette Wiley and José Emmanuel Vega on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 4-5 p.m., a Latinx Identity Dialogue asking the question “What does it mean to identify as Hispanic, Latino or Latinx?”on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 6-7 p.m., and a Latinx Craft Series Tuesday, Oct. 27 through Thursday, Oct. 29 at 6-7 p.m.
