Sobreviviente de COVID cuenta su experiencia / COVID survivor speaks out

El empresario Vicente Ruiz es conocido por ser alguien que ayuda a los demás, pero Ruiz recientemente se encontró en la necesidad de ayuda cuando contrajo COVID-19. Después de luchar contra la enfermedad durante semanas, Ruiz habló con La Semana para compartir su historia y que otros puedan aprender de su experiencia.

Después de lograr evitar contraer la enfermedad durante la mayor parte del año pasado, un mal encuentro bastó para contaminarse.

“Estuve en un sitio de construcción en Enid y descubrí que algunos de los empleados tenían el coronavirus”, explicó Ruiz.

Poco después, Ruiz comenzó a experimentar dolores de cabeza, dolor de estómago y debilidad general, por lo que se hizo la prueba. Efectivamente, el electricista dio positivo por COVID-19.

“Pero no me sentía tan mal, así que seguí trabajando, pero asegurándome de usar una máscara y alejarme de los demás”, dijo. “Pensé, estoy sano, soy fuerte, puedo manejar esto. Eso fue un error”.

Ruiz aprendió rápidamente que continuar esforzándose ayudó a que el virus se apoderara aún más, y las cosas pronto tomaron un giro peligroso.

“El día 26 de diciembre por la mañana cuando me desperté, comencé a sentirme mareado como si fuera a desmayarme”, recordó Ruiz. “Fue entonces cuando me di cuenta de que necesitaba ayuda. Entonces fui a St. Johns en Owasso y cuando llegué me pusieron oxígeno y me dijeron que estaba muy enfermo, que no podían hacer mucho por mí en ese hospital y que no había lugar para mi en otro lugar”.

Para Ruiz, fue un momento aleccionador.

“Entonces supe que tenía que poner mi vida en manos de Dios”, dijo. “Llamé a mi sacerdote y le pedí que escuchara mi confesión y sus bendiciones. Le recé a Dios diciendo: “Pongo mi vida en tus manos. Haz lo que creas que es mejor”.

Pero parece que Dios todavía tiene planes para Ruiz aquí en la Tierra, y las oraciones de sus amigos y seres queridos fueron respondidas. Ahora en camino a la recuperación, Ruiz tiene estos consejos para los demás:

“Nunca pienses que eres tan fuerte y estás en tan buena forma que no te vas a enfermar”, dijo. “Protéjase y proteja a los demás. No se necesita mucho para ponerse una máscarilla y mantener la distancia. Estuve a punto de morir, así que te pido que no te pongas a ti mismo ni a los demás en riesgo de pasar por lo mismo que yo pasé”.

COVID survivor speaks out

Tulsa businessman Vicente Ruiz is well known as being someone who helps others, but Ruiz recently found himself in need of help when he contracted COVID-19. After struggling with the disease for weeks, Ruiz is speaking out to share his story so that others might learn from his experience.

After managing to avoid contracting the illness throughout most of the past year, one wrong encounter was all it took.

“I’d been on a construction site in Enid and I found out that some of the employees there had the coronavirus,” Ruiz explained.

Shortly thereafter, Ruiz began experience headaches, stomach pain, and general weakness, so he got tested. Sure enough, the electrician tested positive for COVID-19.

“But I didn’t feel all that bad, so I continued working, but making sure to wear a mask and stay away from others,” he said. “I thought, I’m healthy, I’m strong, I can handle this. That was a mistake.”

Ruiz quickly learned that continuing to exert himself helped the virus take over even more, and things soon took a dangerous turn.

“On the 26th in the morning when I woke up, I started feeling dizzy like I would faint,” Ruiz recalled. “That’s when I noticed that I needed help. So I went to St. Johns in Owasso and when I got there they put me on oxygen and told me I was a very sick man, that there wasn’t much they could do for me in that hospital, and there was no room for me elsewhere.”

For Ruiz, it was a sobering moment.

“I knew then I had to put my life in the hands of God,” he said. “I called my priest and asked him to hear my confession and for his blessings. I prayed to God, saying ‘I put my life in your hands. Do whatever you think is best.”

But it seems God still has plans for Ruiz here on Earth, and the prayers of his friends and loved ones were answered. Now on the road to recovery, Ruiz has these words of advice for others:

“Don’t ever think that you are so strong and in such good shape that you will not get sick,” he said. “Protect yourself and protect others. It doesn’t take much to put on a mask and keep your distance. I was about to die, so I’m asking you to not put yourself and others at risk of going through the same thing I went through.”
