Arranco el proceso de selecciones juveniles en el estado natural / Olympic Development Program tryouts got started in The Natural State

Sonó la alarma la mañana del sábado 23 de Enero en muchos hogares de jugadores del Noroeste de Arkansas, para así levantarse y hacer el viaje de tres horas para las pruebas de Selecciones Juveniles de Arkansas realizadas en Little Rock. El sueno de los chicos, formar parte de la Selección Juvenil que representara a Arkansas en evento Regional en Junio del 2021.

Clubes como Bentonville FC Prodigy, NWA Manchester, y Fayetteville FC tuvieron representación en las divisiones 2004, 2005, y 2006.

Desde mi llegada a Arkansas siempre me ha llamado la curiosidad del proceso de Selección Juvenil. Desde quien participa y quien hace los méritos para formar parte de el representativo del Estado Natural. Si siempre nos enfocamos en el costo de cualquier programa, me atrevo a decir que nunca participaríamos en los mismo. Pero si lo vemos como una inversión al futuro de nuestros hijos, creo que la actitud cambia. Pero en realidad cual es la inversión que padres de familia tienen que hacer durante este proceso de selección juvenil?

Jim Walker, Director Ejecutivo de la Asociación Estatal de Fútbol de Arkansas dijo “ Todo jugador que quiera participar lo puede hacer, las pruebas son gratis. De allí en adelante si un jugador es seleccionado y no esta registrado con USYS/ASA deberá de pagar su registración de $28.00. Jugadores que sean seleccionados, tendrán un gasto extra de $150.00 el cual se utiliza para cubrir gastos relacionados con el proceso de selección.”

Me atrevo a decir que todo chico que juega el mejor deporte del mundo, tiene como sueño algún día formar parte de la Selección Nacional de Estados Unidos. Para algunos tal vez sea un sueño, pero para la Jim Walker y Arkansas es una meta a largo plazo. “Idealmente nos gustaría que nuestro programa de selección juvenil sirviera de identificación de alguno de nuestros jugadores para que llegaran a la selección nacional, eso seria un gran éxito. Pero creo que nuestro programa provee otras oportunidades para los jugadores: el poder ser entrenados por alguien diferente, algunos jugadores tiene el mismo entrenador durante toda su etapa de desarrollo. Segundo, los eventos regionales como el que se realizara en Junio en Memphis le dará oportunidad a jugadores a estar en frente de entrenadores de diferentes universidades y mostrar sus habilidades deportivas. Tercero, el tener la oportunidad de ser invitados al campamento regional y nacional.”

Will Montgomery Director Técnico del proceso de selecciones juveniles dijo “ Hemos recibido una cantidad grande de jugadores que se registración para estas pruebas, lo que me da mucha alegría y las esperanzas de encontrar un jugador de Arkansas que nos pueda  representar a un nivel más alto, tengo tantas ansias de ver a este grupo y que nos pueden mostrar a todo el cuerpo técnico.” Concluyo Montgomery.

En lo personal, creo que es de suma importancia que jugadores de futbol participen en el proceso de selección juvenil en Arkansas. Al igual que Jim Walker y Will Montgomery me gustaría que se identificaran jugadores de alto rendimiento que nos puedan representar a nivel regional y porque no un día en selección nacional juvenil y mayor.

Pero para eso, hay mucho trabajo por hacer y el jugador debe entender y tener claro que hay que hacer mucho esfuerzo y trabajar fuerte, ya que ha pasado mas de una década desde la ultima vez que Arkansas tuvo representación a nivel nacional. “ Taylor Estrada fue la ultima jugadora de Arkansas que fue seleccionada al campamento regional y que también represento a Estados Unidos en las divisiones Sub 15, 16, y 17 en los equipos que ella jugo y que participaron en competencias internacionales en Italia, Alemania, y Francia. Todo esto paso en los anos 2010-2012. Estas competencia expusieron a Tayler a mejores competencias, y entrenadores de diferentes universidades quienes contribuyeron al reclutamiento y desarrollo de ella.” Agrego Doug Estrada Director Deportivo de Bentonville FC Prodigy.

Todos los jugadores que participaron en la pruebas de selección juvenil tendrán que esperar tres semanas para saber si fueron seleccionados. Veremos a un jugador de Arkansas en Selección Nacional en los próximos años? Eso el tiempo lo dirá.

Olympic Development Program tryouts got started in The Natural State

The alarm clock sounded last Saturday morning in many NWA soccer players’ home; parents and their kids got up and made the three-hour trip to Burns Park,  in Little Rock to participate in the ASA tryouts.  The dream for many of these soccer players is to be part of the group that will represent Arkansas in a Regional event in June 2021. 

Clubs such as Bentonville FC Prodigy, NWA Manchester, and Fayetteville FC were represented in the 2004, 2005, and 2006 during ASA tryouts. 

Since my arrival to Arkansas in 1996,  I have always been curious about the ODP selection process. If we as parents always focus on the cost of any sports program, I dare to say we would never participate in one program. But if we see the cost as an investment in our children’s future, I think the attitude changes.

What is the real investment that parents have to make to be part of the ODP and who can be part of it? 

Jim Walker, Executive Director of ASA said “Any player can participate.  As ODP is an USYS event, players invited to the squad do need to be registered with USYS/ASA.  For tryouts, you do NOT need to be registered with USYS/ASA, but if you are invited to join the ODP squad, you will need to register with USYS/ASA, though this is simply the standard $28 Classic player registration fee. Thereafter, the fee for ODP is $150 for those making the squad which covers the costs incurred as a result of paying our ODP staff coaches for the training, travel, and occasionally food and lodging.”

Many players dream that one day they can be part of the USM National Team. For some, it may be just a dream, but for Jim Walker and ASA it is a long-term goal. “Ideally, we would love for our program to lead to the identification of an Arkansas player who goes on to make the US National Team.  While that may be the pinnacle of success, I believe ODP provides other opportunities for our players that are attainable for all.  First, players obtain a different coaching perspective from our ODP staff coaches.  Often, players may only have one coach throughout their youth soccer careers so ODP provides an opportunity for our players to experience different coaches, different coaching techniques, different styles of play, etc. Second, ODP provides players with the opportunity to make connections with colleges for those that are interested in playing beyond high school.  Sub-Regional events like the one this June in Memphis allow players to showcase their talents not only in front of college coaches but also Regional scouts, thereby rendering a third benefit; the opportunity to attend Regional camp and potentially be selected for Regional or National player pools.”

Will Montgomery Director of Coaching for ASA said “we have received a tremendous amount of registered players for the event, which fills me with excitement about the possibility of finding a player to represent Arkansas at the next level.  I can’t wait to see the players exhibit their quality to me and the coaching staff.” Montgomery concluded. 

It is extremely important that soccer players participate in ODP process in Arkansas. Like Jim Walker and Will Montgomery, I would like to see elite players who can represent Arkansas at the regional level and why not one day in the US Youth and Senior National teams. 

It has been more than a decade since Arkansas was last represented at the regional and national level. “Tayler Estrada was actually the last player from the State of Arkansas to make the Regional ODP team and represented the US in U15,U16,U17 teams. These teams competed internationally in Italy, Germany and France back in 2010,11,12. It was a great opportunity that also exposed her to higher level US team and college coaches who help develop and recruit.” Added Doug Estrada Director of Coaching for Bentonville FC Prodigy. 

All the players who participated ODP last Saturday in Little Rock will have to wait three weeks to find out if they were selected.

Will we see an Arkansas player on the National Team in the next few years? Only time will tell.
