Licencia para indocumentados: a partir del 1 de mayo pueden pedir citas en Nueva Jersey

El sueño cada vez está más cerca: a partir del 1 de mayo los indocumentados que califiquen podrán comenzar a pedir una cita para obtener una licencia de conducir en el estado Nueva Jersey.

Tras una larga espera, los inmigrantes indocumentados ahora podrán solicitar licencias de conducir en Nueva Jersey, reportó NBC Philadelphia al referirse al importante beneficio que está por otorgarse.

Mayo comenzará con beneficio para indocumentados
A partir del 1 de mayo, ciertos residentes, incluyendo a indocumentados, podrán solicitar una licencia estándar del estado que es diferente a la REAL ID, que se emite a residentes legales y deben acceder a edificios federales o volar comercialmente sin pasaporte, explicó el referido medio.

El proyecto de ley que entregará las licencias estatales para inmigrantes indocumentados se aprobó en 2019 y debía entrar en vigencia el 1 de enero de este año, pero la pandemia hizo que la fecha se pospusiera hasta el 1 de mayo.

Y como ya estamos a menos de un mes para el 1 de mayo, NBC Philadelphia detalló lo que necesitarás recopilar para solicitar tu licencia y estar listo para comenzar a conducir por las calles de Nueva Jersey.

La ley requiere que los solicitantes muestren pruebas de edad, identidad y residencia para poder iniciar el proceso de obtención de la nueva licencia estatal. En total, Nueva Jersey requiere seis puntos de prueba de identificación.

Requisitos para licencias para indocumentados
Por fortuna, agregó NBC Philadelphia, el Departamento de Vehículos Motorizados tiene una útil herramienta online para mostrarte cuántos puntos te otorgarán ciertos documentos. Una vez que hayas utilizado la herramienta, debes imprimir la página y llevarla contigo (junto con los documentos) cuando vayas a la Agencia de Vehículos Motorizados (MVA en inglés).

Estos son algunos de los documentos que podrías necesitar (que también verás si haces clic en la frase de ‘herramienta online’ arriba): un pasaporte extranjero con verificación del Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de Estados Unidos (USCIS) o del Servicio de Inmigración y Naturalización y un registro válido de llegada / salida (vale 4 puntos); formulario I-688B o I-766, presentado con una tarjeta válida de Seguro Social (3 puntos); tarjeta de residencia temporal (2 puntos); comprobante de residencia (puede incluir una factura de servicios públicos de los últimos 90 días); un documento de matrimonio (no aceptan copias ni certificados emitidos por entidades religiosas, val 3 puntos) y estado bancario (1 punto).

Los requisitos pueden cambiar
Si piensas optar por la licencia de conducir en Nueva Jersey, recuerda que los documentos enumerados no son exhaustivos y cambiarán en primavera, por lo que debes usar la herramienta online del estado para conocer todas tus opciones.

Diferencia entre esta licencias y examen de manejo
La nueva licencia estándar de Nueva Jersey no cumple con los estándares federales de la REAL ID. Esto significa que las personas no podrán usar la licencia estándar para viajar o visitar edificios federales después de octubre de 2021, explicó NBC Philadelphia. Un REAL ID tiene una estrella y/o una bandera, o dice “Mejorado” (Enhanced).

Otra duda de los usuarios es si es necesario realizar un examen de manejo para solicitar la licencia de conducir estándar para los indocumentados que califiquen. Y la respuesta es sencilla: si planeas conducir, sí debes tomar el examen. Sin embargo, la prueba se puede efectuar en un idioma que no sea el inglés, explicó el referido medio.

Costo de la ID secundaria y cómo programar la cita
El costo total de la licencia con fotografía es de 24 dólares, precisó el informe de NBC Philadelphia. A su vez, indicó que tú mismo puedes programar tu cita online a través del sitio web de la MVA.

Nueva Jersey se une este año a Virginia y Oregón, que desde el 1 de enero comenzaron a ofrecer licencias de manejo para indocumentados, es decir, sin la necesidad de demostrar la ciudadanía estadounidense o residencia legal en el país.

Undocumented People in NJ Can Soon Start Making Appointment for License

After a long wait, undocumented immigrants will now be able to apply for driver’s licenses in New Jersey.

Starting May 1st, certain residents – including undocumented people – will be able to apply for a the state’s standard license which is different from REAL IDs, which are issued to lawful residents and are required to access federal buildings or fly commercially without a passport.

The bill approving state licenses for undocumented immigrants was passed in 2019 and was set to take effect Jan. 1 of this year, but the pandemic caused the date to be pushed back to May 1.

Given that May 1 is fast approaching, here’s what you’ll need to apply for your license and be ready:

What documents will I need?
The law requires applicants to show proof of age, identity and residence in order to be able to start the process of obtaining the new state license.

In total, New Jersey requires six points of proof of ID. The motor vehicle department thankfully has a convenient online tool to show you how many points certain documents will earn you. Once you’ve used the tool, you should print out the page and bring it with you (along with the documents) when you go to the Motor Vehicle Agency.

Here some of the documents you might need (which you’ll also see if you click on the tool linked above):

A foreign passport with verification from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services or the Immigration and Naturalization Service and a valid record of arrival/departure (worth four points).

• Form I-688B or I-766, presented with a valid Social Security card (worth three points)
• Temporary residence card (worth two points)
• Proof of residence (this can include a utility bill from the last 90 days)
• A marriage document (copies and certificates issued by religious entities aren’t acceptable) (worth three points)
• Bank statement (worth one point)
• Proof of residence (this can include a utility bill from the last 90 days)

Remember, the documents we listed are not exhaustive, and will change this spring so use the state’s online tool to see all your options.

You’ll need to translate documents that are not already in English.

It’s important to note that any documents you bring with you to the MVA that are written in another language must first be translated into English by a professional. The translated documents don’t need to be certified, but they should include a note from the person who did the translating.

People who have a final order of deportation, a criminal record or who have previously tried to obtain a license in another state should consult with a lawyer before beginning the application process for the New Jersey license.

What’s the difference between this secondary license and a REAL ID?
The new standard New Jersey license does not comply with federal REAL ID standards. This means people will not be able to use the standard license to travel or visit federal buildings after October 2021.

A REAL ID will have a star and/or flag on it, or it will say “Enhanced.”

Do I need to take a driving test?
If you plan to drive, then yes. However, the test can be taken in a language other than English.
