Eight teams were crowned State Soccer Champs. The pandemic did not allow many graduates in the 2019-20 season to have the opportunity to say goodbye with a State Title.
This year, the story was different: Fayetteville 6A, Searcy 5A, Pulaksy Academy, and Harding Academy 4 A were crowned champions in the girls division.
In the boy’s division Springdale 6 A, Valley View 4 A, Van Buren 5 A, and Green Forest 3 A said goodbye to 2021 with the Arkansas Map in their hands.
Fayetteville High School coach Joe Thoma may have won two titles in a row. The pandemic denied him last year when the season came to an end when his team was 7-0-1.
This year, with his former team in the stands during the state championship match, relief would finally come for FHS by defeating Bentonville West High School 3-0. Goals for The Purple Bulldogs were scored by Lauren Magre and Maddie Wilburn. “As a coach it is a relief now that the season is over. Personally, I am so happy for the girls, that they accomplissed the team goal of winning state. We never talk about being undefeated, just playing well as we could each time we went out to trained or play. Fayetteville is blessed with some very good players and families that support FHS soccer. ” Thoma said.
Springdale High School had a phenomenal season achieving its eighth conference title, and reaching its fourth state crown. Springdale had just won its last state title in 2019, and came to defend the title like a champion does against Conway High School.
The Bulldogs took the title after beating Conway 4-1. Goals for Springdale were scored by Erick Guerrero, Rene Recinos, and Diego Flores. “After a few losses this season we watched the other teams celebrate like they won the State Championship. We just kept our focus on getting better throughout the season and playing our best soccer at the end of the year we didn’t want to celebrate until we had that trophy in our hands.” Said DJ Beeler, D.T. of Springdale.
Another historic moment during Champions Weekend was marked by Green Forest High School. 7 years had to pass for The Green Forest Tigers to give joy to this little piece of land that has great cultural diversity.
Erick Pérez, head soccer coach for the Tigers, arrived in his first season to manage to write a story that only Hollywood could have invented.
With all the talent that Pérez has in his cast, Los Tigres should be a rival to beat every season. Having won the second ever title in the boys divison is historic.
“I would love to explain the way I’m feeling but I truly can’t. The fact this program has
two state titles and to be a part of them both is like one in a million. It happening in my first year is unreal. It definitely motivates me to continue to grow as a coach. I am seriously blessed. I thank God for leading me in this path.” Erick Pérez concluded.
