Amor más allá de la muerte: Liam Neeson llora a su mujer cada día desde hace 13 años

Cuando en 2003, Liam Neeson interpretó en Love Actually al viudo con el corazón destrozado que enmascara su duelo acompañando las desventuras sentimentales de su hijastro preadolescente, no imaginaba que solo seis años más tarde él mismo perdería al amor de su vida y quedaría a cargo de su dos hijos de doce y trece años.

Pero a diferencia de Daniel –ese personaje irremediablemente triste con el que nos reencontramos cada vez que se acerca la Navidad y los canales y plataformas reponen la comedia romántica de Richard Curtis–, el actor nacido en Irlanda en 1952 no tuvo tiempo de prepararse para la tragedia.

El 16 de marzo de 2009 estaba en Toronto por el rodaje del thriller erótico Chloé, junto a Julianne Moore, cuando recibió la llamada de quien era su mujer desde hacía 15 años, Natasha Richardson.

La hija mayor de la legendaria actriz británica Vanessa Redgrave también había viajado a Canadá, aunque en plan de descanso, para pasar unos días en el resort de ski Mont Tremblant de Québec con el primogénito de la pareja, Micheál. Esa mañana había tomado una clase para principiantes en la que sufrió una caída que obligó al instructor a llamar a los paramédicos: un golpe seco de la cabeza contra la nieve dura. Pero la ganadora del Tony por su rol de Sally Bowles en Cabaret insistió en que se sentía bien y hasta firmó un documento en el que rechazó la asistencia médica. Apenas permitió que la escoltaran hasta su cuarto del hotel Quintessence.

Desde allí habló por última vez con su marido: “Ay, querido, ¡no sabés el revolcón que me di en la nieve!”. En ese momento, “no tenía idea de lo que le pasaba”, contó hace algunos años el protagonista de La lista de Schindler en una entrevista con CBS.

Richardson estaba atravesando lo que se conoce como “intervalo de lucidez”, el período en el que alguien con un trauma cerebral parece estar bien mientras se forman los hematomas que aumentan la presión dentro del cráneo. La atención que en ese lapso puede ser crucial, en el caso de Natasha recién llegó tres horas después, cuando se quejó de un fuerte dolor de cabeza y comenzó a mostrar signos de confusión. Sólo entonces una ambulancia la trasladó hasta el hospital local.

“Me llamó mi asistente y me dijo que fuera urgente, y me subí de inmediato a un avión. Durante el vuelo le avisaron al piloto que cambiara el destino por Montreal, porque la estaban derivando ahí, a un hospital más grande”, recordó Neeson, que conoció a la madre de sus hijos en 1993 en la obra de teatro Anna Christie en Broadway, la escena en la que Richardson –que acababa de separarse del productor Robert Fox– más se destacó.

“Nunca había sentido esa química explosiva con una actriz ni un actor. Éramos como Ginger Rogers y Fred Astaire, bailábamos de una manera maravillosa y libre todas las noches”, dijo en el mismo reportaje de CBS. Se casaron al año siguiente en la chacra que compraron en Millbrook, New York, y en la que todavía vive el yerno de Redgrave. Micheál nació en 1995, Daniel, en 1996.

Habían pasado solo dos años de la muerte de Richardson cuando un Neeson en carne viva narró a Esquire entre lágrimas su llegada al hospital de Montreal, al que describió como “enorme, vidrioso, oscuro, dickensiano”.

Durante los 18 meses previos, había aceptado y cancelado en varias oportunidades la nota con el periodista Tom Chiarella, que escribe que durante la charla el actor tomó más de una botella de Pinot Noir. Más adelante, Neeson –que en los años ochenta fue pareja de Helen Mirren– admitiría ante GQ que el alcohol fue un refugio durante los primeros tiempos sin su mujer: “Dejé de tomar porque me di cuenta que era demasiado. Empezó cuando murió Tasha. Nunca en el trabajo… pero era fácil a la noche tomar dos o tres botellas de Pinot y creer que estaba todo bajo control”.

Fue una enfermera la que lo reconoció mientras deambulaba desesperado buscando a su esposa en los pasillos de aquel hospital de Montreal. “Me dijo dónde estaba y me encontré con un doctor de no más de 18 años que me informó lo peor. Me mostró la radiografía de su cráneo aplastado. Yo sabía lo que significaba eso”, dijo.

Y recordó el pacto que habían hecho exactamente diez años antes, cuando otro accidente los puso en la situación inversa. Richardson filmaba en Canadá, y él chocó su moto contra un venado. Voló a verlo al hospital de Lenox Hill, donde lo internaron, y al llegar, le dijeron que no pasaría la noche. Aquella vez, todo resultó bien, pero se prometieron que si alguno volvía a estar en una situación de vida o muerte y no había nada que hacer, “desenchufarían las máquinas”.

“Entonces fui y le dije que la amaba –confió Neeson en el programa 60 Minutes–. Le dije, ‘Mi amor, no vas a salir de esta. Te partiste la cabeza. No sé si me escuchás, pero eso es lo que pasó. Así que te vamos a llevar a Nueva York. Y van a venir toda tu familia y amigos.’ Y eso fue más o menos todo”. Al actor le tocaba ahora viajar desde Canadá hasta el Lenox Hill de Manhattan junto a su mujer en estado irreversible.

Sus hijos, su madre, su hermana Joely Richardson y sus íntimos, pasarían junto a ellos las últimas horas en el hospital del Upper East Side neoyorquino. Natasha murió a los 45 años el 18 de marzo de 2009 y, después de que algunos de sus órganos fueron donados, fue enterrada en Lithgow junto a su abuela –la también actriz Rachel Kempson–, muy cerca de la chacra familiar de Millbrook.

“Creo que sobreviví escapándome al trabajo. Sé cuántos años tengo y que estoy a una lesión en el hombro de perder papeles como el de Búsqueda Implacable (Taken). Así que me quedo con el entrenamiento, me quedo con el trabajo. Eso es lo extraño del dolor: no te permite prepararte. Creés que vas a llorar y terminar de una vez. Hacés planes, pero nunca funcionan”, le dijo Esquire.

El efecto, tal vez el efecto de la saga creada por Luc Besson que –un año antes de la inesperada muerte de Richardson– convirtió a Neeson en un héroe de acción que enfrenta a la mafia de la trata para salvar a su hija, fue una de sus grandes motivaciones en medio del dolor más profundo. El fenómeno del personaje de Bryan Mills, un papel para el que el actor le pidió especialmente a Besson ser considerado, pese a no dar el tipo ni la edad –ya había pasado los 50– habituales para ese tipo de thrillers, lo puso en el ranking de los mejor pagos de Hollywood y le dio la oportunidad de dar en la ficción la pelea que no podía dar en la vida: el de vengarse y ajusticiar la muerte de quienes ama.

En En Venganza bajo cero (2019), una de sus últimas películas, la expiación es en familia, y a los tiros. En el film, Neeson comparte cartel con su propio hijo Micheál Richardson –que se cambió el apellido para homenajear a su madre–, y debe, cómo no, tomar revancha por su muerte. Volvieron a actuar juntos en la comedia Made in Italy (2020), donde otra vez son padre e hijo, y la manera de procesar el duelo es menos sutil: su esposa murió.

Ser un padre soltero no siempre fue fácil, y Micheál tuvo algunos problemas de adicciones, que superó. “Están aprendiendo, haciendo flexiones, y a veces toman avenidas peligrosas y pienso: ‘Carajo, si Tasha estuviera acá, podría compartir esto’. Pero estamos bien. Las drogas son una preocupación para todos los padres. Son como un virus –dijo a GQ cuando los chicos todavía iban al colegio–. Un adolescente prueba y de pronto queda atrapado, y eso cambia su vida y la de su familia para siempre. Confío en ellos y son chicos sensibles, pero hay veces en que la química no funciona”.

En otra charla más reciente le agradeció a su amigo Bono: “Pudo haber sido mucho peor, pudo haber sido un infierno. Pero me acuerdo que él venía mucho a casa después del accidente y, una vez, de la nada, le pregunta a Micheál, ‘¿Vos cuántos años tenés?’. Y él contesta: ‘Trece’. Y Bono le dice, ‘Ah, justo la edad que tenía yo cuando perdí a mi mamá’. Y yo casi lo beso. Porque era como decirle: ‘Mirá, yo también pasé por lo mismo cuando era como vos y estoy bien, vos vas a estar bien también’.

Él también está bien, a su manera. Volvió a filmar pocos días después de la muerte de Natasha y nunca más paró. A los 69, se pondrá de nuevo en la piel de un héroe en The Ice Road, que Netflix estrenará este viernes. Desde que Micheál y Daniel se fueron Millbrook para estudiar, pasa bastante tiempo solo, pero se mantiene sobrio.

Aunque en estos trece años los medios lo relacionaron ocasionalmente con algunas mujeres, él dice que no le interesa volver a enamorarse: “No estoy a la caza, prefiero guardarme para mí”.
