Hermanos abrazados por la familia y la fe / Brothers embraced by family and faith

Si se pregunta a cualquier persona con raíces latinoamericanas sobre las fuerzas centrales de su vida, es probable que dos respuestas se eleven por encima de todas las demás: la familia y la fe. En ningún lugar está esto más representado que en las vidas entrelazadas de tres hermanos de la familia Reyes-Velásquez: Kevin, Martín y Fabián.

Kevin, Martín y Fabián son estudiantes de la Academia Cristiana Summit en Broken Arrow. Aunque todavía es demasiado pronto para que Fabián haga planes de carrera, los mayores ya han empezado a pensar en lo que les gustaría hacer en el futuro.

Kevin está considerando la posibilidad de estudiar medicina deportiva, aunque mantiene sus opciones abiertas.

“Por lo menos espero tener éxito en la vida y que Dios me ayude a encontrar un camino para tener éxito también”, dijo.

“En el futuro me veo haciendo ingeniería mecánica”, dijo Martin. “Me gusta mucho construir y diseñar cosas, por eso estoy eligiendo este campo, y espero tener mucho éxito con lo que hago, y que la gracia de Dios pueda brillar a través de mí con mi trabajo”.

Los tres chicos describen a su familia como “unida” y una familia “a la que le gusta pasar mucho tiempo junta”.

La suya es ciertamente una familia de fuerte herencia latina. El padre de los niños, Martín Reyes, es de México y su madre, Verónica Velázquez-Reyes, es de linaje boliviano pero nació en Argentina. La familia es propietaria de dos exitosos restaurantes de Broken Arrow, Fiesta Mambo Mexican Kitchen y Casa de Reyes. Crecer en una familia emprendedora ha inculcado en los chicos una fuerte ética de trabajo, algo que seguramente les servirá tanto en sus actividades académicas como en su vida profesional.

También es fundamental en la vida de los niños su fe cristiana, que les acompaña desde que tienen uso de razón.

“Fuimos educados así por nuestros padres y me alegro de que nos hayan educado así”, dijo Kevin, “porque ha afectado significativamente a nuestras vidas porque vivimos de una manera que hace feliz a Dios y también a todos los demás”.

Martin y Fabian se hicieron eco de esas palabras, diciendo que están orgullosos de haber sido criados para ser buenas personas con buena moral.

Cuando se les preguntó si tenían algún consejo para otros chicos de su edad, Martin resumió los sentimientos de los hermanos:

“Tomen siempre cada momento de la vida como una bendición, porque cada aliento que Dios nos da es una bendición, y debemos estar muy agradecidos por ello”.

Dondequiera que la vida lleve a estos jóvenes, los hermanos ejemplifican la unidad y la fuerza de carácter que mantiene fuerte a la comunidad latina. (La Semana)

Brothers embraced by family and faith

If you ask anyone with Latin American roots about the central forces in their lives, two answers are likely to rise above all others: family and faith. Nowhere is this represented more than in the intertwined lives of three brothers in the Reyes-Velasquez family – Kevin, Martin, and Fabian.

Kevin, Martin, and Fabian are all students at Summit Christian Academy in Broken Arrow. While it’s still too early for Fabian to be making career plans, the older boys have already begun thinking about what they might like to do in the future.

Kevin is considering pursuing sports medicine, although he is keeping his options open.

“At least I hope I’m successful in life and that God can help me find a path to that successful as well,” he said.

“In the future I see myself doing mechanical engineering,” Martin said. “I really like building and designing stuff, which is why I’m choosing this field, and hopefully I’m very successful with what I do, and that God’s grace can shine through me with my work.”

All three boys describe their family as “united” and a family “that likes to spend a lot of time together.”

Theirs is certainly a family of strong Latin heritage. The boys’ father, Martin Reyes, is from Mexico and their mother, Veronica Velazquez-Reyes, is of Bolivian lineage but was born in Argentina. The family owns two successful Broken Arrow restaurants, Fiesta Mambo Mexican Kitchen and Casa de Reyes. Growing up in an entrepreneurial family has instilled in the boys a strong work ethic, something that will surely serve them well both in their academic pursuits and their professional lives.

Also central to the boys’ lives is their Christian faith, which has been with them as long as they can remember.

“We were raised that way by our parents and I’m glad that we were raised that way,” Kevin said, “because it has significantly affected our lives because we live in a way that makes God happy and everybody else happy as well.”

Martin and Fabian echoed those words, saying they are proud to have been raised to be good people with good morals.

Asked if they have any words of advice for other kids their age, Martin summed up the brothers’ sentiments:

“Always take each moment of life as a blessing, because every breath that God gives us is a blessing, and we should be very thankful for it.”

Wherever life may take these young men, the brothers exemplify the unity and force of character that keeps the Latin community strong. (La Semana)
