Steven Yeun, Nathan Lane, Issa Rae, Eiza González, Luis Gerardo Méndez, Robert Pattinson, Janet Jackson, Leslie Odom. y Laverne Cox están entre los miembros invitados este año a formar parte de la Academia de las Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas.

La organización que otorga los Oscar dijo el jueves que 395 profesionales de la industria del cine, 46% de ellos mujeres y 39% de grupos infrarrepresentados, han sido invitados a unirse a la Academia. Si aceptan, lo cual hace la mayoría, tendrán el privilegio de votar en los Oscar del próximo año.

Los nuevos miembros de la Academia incluyen a los nominados de este año Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm), Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday) y Paul Raci (Sound of Metal). También se sumarán algunos ganadores como Youn Yuh-jung de Minari, el director de cinematografía de Mank Erik Messerschmidt, la cantante y compositora H.E.R. y la guionista de Promising Young Woman, Emerald Fennell.

Otros actores invitados son Carrie Coon, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Henry Golding, Clea DuVall, Hugh Bonneville, Stephen Root y Jonathan Majors. Entre los directores invitados están Lizzie Borden, George C. Wolfe, Janizca Bravo, Shaka King, Nia DaCosta, Cathy Yan, Craig Brewer y Jonathan Glazer.

Miembros de la diversidad
La diversidad y la inclusión siguen siendo una prioridad para la academia de cine. Esto se observa en el número relativamente grande de mujeres y grupos subrepresentados invitados. El grupo es también muy internacional.

Más de la mitad de los invitados provienen de países distintos de Estados Unidos. El número de invitados también se redujo drásticamente este año en un esfuerzo por un crecimiento futuro constante.

After several years of massive expansion focused largely on changing its demographics in the aftermath of the #OscarsSoWhite uproar, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday returned to a smaller list of invitations for new members — albeit one that still includes plenty of big names, such as Janet Jackson, Robert Pattinson, H.E.R., Henry Golding and Eiza Gonzalez, as well as others who are more closely associated with TV (e.g. Kenya Barris, Hugh Bonneville, Laverne Cox, Issa Rae) or theater (e.g. Nathan Lane).

To enable steady future growth and to ensure the necessary infrastructure, staff resources and environment to support all Academy members, the number invited to membership was limited to roughly half that of recent years,” the Academy said in a statement accompanying the list.

The 2021 class is 46 percent women, 39 percent underrepresented ethnic/racial communities, and 53 percent international from 49 countries outside of the United States.

Among those asked to join this year are 89 past Oscar nominees, including 25 winners. A bunch of the new invitees were finalists at the most recent Oscars ceremony on April 25, including Yuh-Jung Youn, who won best supporting actress for Minari; Emerald Fennell, who won best original screenplay for Promising Young Woman; Dan Janvey, who won best picture for Nomadland; Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe, who won best live action short for Two Distant Strangers; Michael Govier and Will McCormack, who won best animated short for If Anything Happens I Love You; and Maria Bakalova, Jon Batiste, Andra Day, Vanessa Kirby, Darius Marder, Christina Oh, Kemp Powers, Paul Raci and Steven Yeun, all of whom were nominated.

Eight individuals were invited by multiple branches, including Fennell and nominees Leslie Odom Jr., Lee Isaac Chung, Shaka King and Florian Zeller.
