Miles de haitianos acampan en Texas tras cruce fronterizo masivo

WASHINGTON.-Más de 8.000 inmigrantes irregulares, en su mayoría de nacionalidad haitiana, están retenidos por las autoridades estadounidenses en un campamento improvisado en el sur de Texas tras un cruce masivo en la frontera.

Los migrantes han estado cruzando desde este martes a Estados Unidos por la zona de Del Río (Texas) y han desbordado a las autoridades migratorias, que han improvisado el campamento debajo del puente internacional que conecta con Ciudad Acuña (México) a la espera de ir procesando solicitudes de asilo.

Estos más de 8.000 migrantes, según cifras de las autoridades locales, duermen al raso y carecen de servicios básicos, unas condiciones que amenazan con crear una nueva emergencia humanitaria en la frontera sur.

La Patrulla Fronteriza de Estados Unidos ha enviado refuerzos al sector de Del Río para gestionar el campo y ante la incertidumbre de que más migrantes puedan cruzar en los próximos días.

«Para prevenir enfermedades relacionadas con el calor, el área con sombra debajo del Puente Internacional Del Río está sirviendo como un puesto temporal de para mientras los migrantes esperan a estar bajo la custodia de la Patrulla Fronteriza», explicó en un comunicado este cuerpo.

El gobernador de Texas, el republicano Greg Abbott, anunció este jueves el cierre de seis puntos de cruce fronterizo con México para «impedir que las caravanas de migrantes infesten» el estado, aunque posteriormente dio marcha y dijo que los agentes estatales solo harán acto de presencia para disminuir las llegadas.

Thousands of Haitian migrants held under Texas bridge after crossing border

More than 10,000 migrants — mostly from Haiti — have formed a makeshift camp under a bridge that connects Texas and Mexico after crossing the southern border.

Why it matters: Several government officials have referred to the situation in Del Rio, Texas, as “unprecedented,” the Washington Post writes. The migrants represent a new border emergency for the Biden administration, which is already struggling to welcome tens of thousands of Afghan evacuees.

• Some migrants told the Post that they are crossing the border because “conditions are too hard in Haiti.”
• Several of the arriving migrants are Haitians who left the country following the 2010 earthquake, with many deciding to go to Brazil and other South American countries, the Post notes.
• U.S. Customs and Border Protection told the Post in a statement that it is temporarily holding the migrants in a shaded area under the Del Rio International Bridge to “prevent injuries from heat-related illness … while migrants wait to be taken into USBP custody.”

By the numbers: Del Rio Mayor Bruno Lozano said there were 10,503 people as of 6:45 p.m. Thursday, up from around 8,200 in the morning.

• More than 29,000 Haitian migrants entered the U.S. from the southern border between October 2020 and August 2021, a massive increase from the 3,653 that arrived during the same timeframe last year, according to CBP.
• What they’re saying: “The border patrol right now is so overwhelmed with the influx of migrants in the Del Rio sector,” Lozano said.
