Dos turistas muertos tras un tiroteo en el balneario mexicano de Tulum / Shootout in Mexican tourist hotspot of Tulum leaves two foreign women dead

CIUDAD DE MÉXICO.-Un tiroteo en un restaurante del balneario de Tulum, en el Caribe mexicano, dejó dos turistas muertos y otros tres de heridos, según informó este jueves la Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) de Quintana Roo.

«Inicia FGE Quintana Roo carpeta de investigación sobre los hechos ocurridos en Tulum en donde dos personas de origen extranjero perdieron la vida y tres más resultaron lesionadas por arma de fuego al interior de un establecimiento mientras consumían alimentos», informó la Fiscalía estatal en un comunicado.

Según detalló el boletín, las primeras investigaciones establecen que el tiroteo ocurrió en la noche del miércoles durante un choque entre grupos delictivos que se dedican al tráfico de drogas a pequeña escala.

«La noche de este miércoles 20 de octubre, las 5 personas que se encontraban al interior de un restaurante fueron lesionadas al momento de ocurrir el enfrentamiento entre dos grupos delincuenciales», puntualizó el texto.

Paramédicos y rescatistas acudieron al lugar ubicado en la calle Centauro en la zona centro de Tulum para proporcionar primeros auxilios a los lesionados y trasladarlos a un hospital para su atención médica.

Pese a ello, «una persona de origen extranjera perdió la vida en el lugar y posteriormente, una más falleció en el hospital», indicó la Fiscalía estatal.

Las 3 personas extranjeras que resultaron heridas en el establecimiento son atendidas en hospitales.

A través de la Dirección de Atención a Víctimas de esta Fiscalía se está estableciendo comunicación con los representantes consulares de las víctimas, de los que no se ha detallado la nacionalidad.

«El fiscal del Ministerio Público llevó a cabo el aseguramiento del inmueble para realizar los actos de investigación correspondientes», concluyó el texto.

German and Indian killed, and three foreign women injured, believed to be caught in crossfire of clash between drug gangs

A shootout between suspected gang members has left two foreign women dead and three injured at a restaurant in Mexico’s Caribbean beach resort of Tulum.

The women killed were from Germany and India while the injured were from Germany and the Netherlands, the district attorney’s office in Quintana Roo state said.

Famed for its ancient Mayan ruins and turquoise waters, Tulum is one of the country’s top tourist destinations, but it has been shaken by turf wars between rival gangs.

Initial investigations indicated the shooting on Wednesday evening was “an armed clash between criminal groups dedicated to the sale of drugs,” the district attorney’s office said in a statement.

One of the victims was killed at the scene and another died in hospital, it added.

Tulum’s mayor, Marciano Dzul, told Milenio television that the victims had no known links to the criminals and appeared to have been caught in the crossfire.

One of the alleged gunmen had been arrested, he added.

Dzul acknowledged that Tulum was facing a wave of violence linked to rival gangs involved in drug dealing and extortion.

Mexico is plagued by cartel-related bloodshed that has seen more than 300,000 people murdered since the government deployed the military in the “war on drugs” in 2006.
