El presidente estadounidense, Joe Biden, visitó este viernes a los soldados estadounidenses desplegados cerca de la frontera polaca con Ucrania, a los que definió como “la mejor fuerza de combate de la historia del mundo”.
Biden se sentó a almorzar pizza con algunos miembros de la 82 División Aerotransportada de las Fuerzas Armadas de EEUU, desplazados a Polonia para reforzar el flanco oriental de la OTAN tras la invasión rusa de Ucrania. “Estamos en medio de, y no quiero sonar demasiado filosófico, pero en medio de una lucha entre democracias y oligarcas”, expresó el mandatario.
Y siguió: “El mundo no será el mismo, no por Ucrania, pero no será el mismo dentro de 10 o 15 años en términos de nuestras estructuras organizacionales. La pregunta es: ¿Quién prevalecerá? ¿Nuestra democracia va a prevalecer y los valores que compartimos? ¿O las autocracias van a prevalecer? Y eso es realmente lo que está en juego. Entonces lo que están haciendo (dijo a los soldados) es consecuente, realmente consecuente”.
Luego, indicó: “Pasé mucho tiempo en Ucrania cuando era senador y vicepresidente. He hablado con la Rada (Parlamento) en los días en que de hecho no tenían lo que llamarías ‘democracia’ y estaba allí en Maidan cuando el ex líder (ex presidente ucraniano Viktor Yanukovych) tuvo que despegar y encabezar a Rusia. Y entonces, ya sabes, con el pueblo ucraniano, el pueblo ucraniano tiene mucha columna vertebral y muchas agallas, y estoy seguro de que lo están observando”.

“Muchas, muchas gracias por todo lo que están haciendo. Ustedes son la mejor fuerza de combate de la historia del mundo”, dijo también el presidente a los soldados junto al aeropuerto de la ciudad polaca de Rzeszów, situada a unos 100 kilómetros de la frontera con Ucrania.
El mandatario contó a los militares una anécdota sobre cómo su hijo Beau, fallecido en 2015, no quería usar el apellido Biden para no llamar la atención cuando estuvo desplegado como combatiente en la guerra de Irak.
Vestido sin corbata y claramente de buen humor, Biden dijo a los soldados que quería almorzar con ellos e inmediatamente se hizo con un trozo de pizza con pepperoni y jalapeño, cuyo picor provocó que se le saltaran las lágrimas.
El presidente charló animadamente con los uniformados y después se trasladó por distintas mesas para saludarlos a todos.
Poco antes, el mandatario visitó una sala en la que catorce militares estaban esperando para cortarse el pelo, y bromeó con ellos al decirles que, si él fuera a la peluquería, no habría “mucho” que cortar.
La ciudad de Rzeszów, situada a algo más de una hora por carretera de la frontera con Ucrania, se ha convertido en una suerte de centro logístico en Polonia, que ha recibido más de 2 millones de refugiados ucranianos.
Rzeszów es la primera parada en Polonia de Biden, que mañana, sábado, se reunirá en Varsovia con refugiados ucranianos y dará un discurso sobre la respuesta aliada a la invasión rusa de Ucrania antes de volar de vuelta a Washington.

Joe Biden visited US soldiers on the Polish border with Ukraine: “We are in the middle of a fight between democracies and oligarchs”
The American President, Joe Biden visited this Friday the US soldiers deployed near the Polish border with Ukraine which he defined as “the best fighting force in the history of the world”.
Biden sat down for a pizza lunch with some members of the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Armed Forces, posted to Poland to reinforce NATO’s eastern flank after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “We are in the middle of, and I don’t want to sound too philosophical, but we are in the middle of a struggle between democracies and oligarchs”, expressed the president.
And he continued: “The world will not be the same, not because of Ukraine, but it will not be the same in 10 or 15 years in terms of our organizational structures. The question is: Who will prevail? Will our democracy prevail and the values we share? Or are autocracies going to prevail? And that is really what is at stake. So what they are doing (he told the soldiers) is consistent, really consistent”.
Then, he stated: “I spent a lot of time in Ukraine when I was a senator and vice president. I have spoken to the Rada (Parliament) in the days when they did not actually have what you would call ‘democracy’ and I was there on the Maidan when the former leader (former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych) had to take off and lead Russia. And so, you know, with the Ukrainian people, the Ukrainian people have a lot of backbone and a lot of guts, and I’m sure they’re watching it.”
“Thank you very, very much for all that you are doing. You are the best fighting force in the history of the world”, the president also told soldiers outside the airport in the Polish city of Rzeszów, located about 100 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.

The president told the military an anecdote about how his son Beau, who died in 2015, did not want to use the last name Biden to avoid attracting attention when he was deployed as a combatant in the Iraq war.
Dressed without a tie and clearly in a good mood, Biden told the soldiers he wanted to have lunch with them and immediately grabbed a slice of pepperoni-jalapeño pizza, the spiciness of which brought tears to his eyes.
The president chatted animatedly with the uniformed men and then moved to different tables to greet them all.
Shortly before, the president visited a room where fourteen soldiers were waiting to cut their hair, and joked with them telling them that if he went to the barber shop, there wouldn’t be “much” to cut.
The city of Rzeszów, located just over an hour by road from the border with Ukraine, has become a kind of logistics center in Poland, which has received more than 2 million Ukrainian refugees.
