Nueva vacuna contra COVID-19 disponible muy pronto / THD will soon start administering new COVID-19 vaccine

TULSA, OK – Los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC, por sus siglas en inglés) respaldaron la recomendación del Comité Consultivo de prácticas de Inmunización (ACIP, por sus siglas en inglés) de la vacuna contra COVID-19 Novavax para series primarias de vacunación en adultos de 18 años en adelante.

Novavax es una vacuna contra COVID-19 de dos dosis y con base en proteína, añadiendo una opción más a las vacunas ARNm Pfizer y Moderna, y a la vacuna de vector viral Johnson & Johnson.

Las vacunas con base en proteína han sido usadas en los Estados Unidos por más de 30 años, comenzando con la primera vacuna autorizada contra la hepatitis B. Otras vacunas familiares usadas en los Estados Unidos creadas con la misma ciencia incluyen las que protegen contra la influenza y la tos ferina.

“La vacuna Novavax fue creada utilizando la misma ciencia que otras vacunas que han estado al alcance por décadas, incluyendo la vacuna para la influenza estacional”, dijo la Jefa de División de Servicios de Salud Preventiva de THD, Priscilla Haynes. “Esta es otra opción de vacuna contra el COVID-19 que puede ser más atractiva para las personas que no están seguras de recibir una vacuna de ARN”.

En Oklahoma, la vacuna Novavax estará disponible a individuos a principios de agosto. El Departamento de Salud de Tulsa estará ofreciendo la recién aprobada vacuna contra COVID-19 Novavax a individuos de 18 años en adelante tan pronto como el suministro sea recibido. Se anticipa que la vacuna esté disponible antes del 1ro de agosto.

Otras vacunas contra COVID-19 que ya están en el mercado están ampliamente disponibles por una variedad de proveedores alrededor del condado de Tulsa. Las vacunas contra COVID-19 están disponibles únicamente con cita en las siguientes locaciones del Departamento de Salud de Tulsa.

THD will soon start administering new COVID-19 vaccine

TULSA, OK – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) endorsed the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) recommendation of the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine for primary series vaccination in adults ages 18 and older.

Novavax is a two-dose, protein-based COVID-19 vaccine, adding another option to the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines and the Johnson & Johnson viral-vector vaccine.

Protein-based vaccines have been used in the United States for more than 30 years, beginning with the first licensed hepatitis B vaccine. Other familiar vaccines used in the U.S. created with the same science include those that protect against influenza and whooping cough.

“Novavax vaccine was created using the same science as vaccines that have been around for decades including the seasonal flu vaccine,” said THD Division Chief of Preventive Health Services Priscilla Haynes. “This is another COVID-19 vaccine option that may be more appealing to individuals who are hesitant to receiving a RNA vaccine.”

In Oklahoma, the Novavax vaccine will be available for individuals in early August. The Tulsa Health Department will begin offering the newly approved Novavax COVID-19 vaccine to individuals 18 and older as soon as the supply is received. It is anticipated the vaccine will be available before August 1.  

Other COVID-19 vaccines already on the market are readily available at a variety of providers throughout Tulsa County. COVID-19 vaccines are available on an appointment basis at the following Tulsa Health Department locations.

“Vaccines are the best way to protect against vaccine-preventable diseases and we know that receiving your COVID-19 vaccine decreases severe illness, hospitalizations and death from COVID-19,” added Haynes.
