Almodóvar estrenará en Cannes su wéstern queer

“Es un wéstern queer que cuenta la historia de dos hombres que se aman y en el que sus protagonistas (Pedro Pascal y Ethan Hawke) se comportan de forma opuesta en la misma situación”, reveló el director en el podcast de Duda Lipa sobre este filme en inglés de 30 minutos de duración que se rodó parcialmente en el desierto de Tabernas (Almería, España)

Pedro Almodóvar estrenará Strange Way of Life, un wéstern sobre la homosexualidad protagonizado por Pedro Pascal y Ethan Hawke, en el próximo Festival de Cannes previsto para el mes de mayo, anunció este viernes el cineasta en el pódcast «At Your Service», de Dua Lipa.

Durante su conversación con la artista británica, el director español definió su nuevo cortometraje como un «wéstern queer» en el que dos pistoleros se convierten en amantes.

«Es un wéstern queer que cuenta la historia de dos hombres que se aman y en el que sus protagonistas (Pascal y Hawke) se comportan de forma opuesta en la misma situación», reveló Almodóvar sobre este filme en inglés de 30 minutos de duración que se ha rodado parcialmente en el desierto de Tabernas (Almería, España).

Según Almodóvar, esta producción utilizará el lejano oeste para introducir «diálogos que no se han producido antes en un wéstern» y en los que se abordará el concepto de masculinidad «en un sentido profundo».

«Tiene muchos elementos del wéstern, como los pistoleros, el rancho o el sheriff, pero creo que en la gran pantalla nunca se han producido conversaciones de este tipo y en este contexto», explicó el ganador del Óscar a mejor película extranjera en 1999 por «Todo Sobre Mi Madre».

Fue en el Festival de Venecia de hace dos años cuando Almodóvar adelantó la producción de un «wéstern muy particular» y anunció el título, Strange Way of Life (Extraña forma de vida), tomado de un fado de Amália Rodrigues.

«La letra de ese fado sugiere que no hay existencia más extraña que aquella que se vive de espaldas a tus propios deseos», argumentó entonces el cineasta.

En junio de este año se hizo oficial el inicio del rodaje y la sinopsis de esta historia que habla de Silva, un ranchero que cruza a caballo el desierto para visitar al sheriff Jake, con quien había trabajado como pistolero a sueldo 25 años antes.

En el reparto de Strange Way of Life figuran también los españoles Pedro Casablanc y Sara Sálamo, junto a las jóvenes promesas Jason Fernández, el portugués José Condessa, el modelo George Steane y Manu Ríos.

El diseño de vestuario corre a cargo de Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello, quienes también ejercen como productores asociados de este proyecto.

Pedro Almodóvar’s Gay Cowboy Western Will Premiere at Cannes in 2023

The film stars Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke as two former gunmen for hire.

Saddle up, cowpokes — there’s a new queer Western headed to town.

Appearing on Dua Lipa’s podcast At Your Service on December 2, gay filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar announced his half-hour short film Strange Way of Life will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023. The film stars Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke as two former gunmen for hire who meet again years later, after Hawke’s character Jake has become a sheriff.

As Almodóvar told Dua Lipa, the film is a “queer Western, in the sense that there are two men and they love each other,” but that Pascal and Hawke’s characters “behave in that situation in an opposite way.”

“It’s about masculinity in a deep sense, because the Western is a male genre,” the All About My Mother director explained. “What I can tell you about the film is that it has a lot of the elements of the Western — it has the gunslinger, it has the ranch, it has the sheriff — but what it has that most Westerns don’t have is the kind of dialogue that I don’t think a Western film has ever captured between two men.”

The title Strange Way of Life references a fado, a type of traditional Portuguese song, of the same name sung by iconic fadista Amália Rodrigues. Rodrigues’s original tune is a lament for an “independent heart […] I can’t command,” one that keeps “stubbornly bleeding,” intimating that suppressing desire is the strangest way to live of all. Hmm, wonder what that could mean?

Almodóvar told IndieWire in June this film could be his “answer to Brokeback Mountain,” and there’s no doubt it’ll be fascinating to see him tackle such a massive tangle of themes in only 30 minutes — but let’s be honest, we’d be in just to watch Pascal and Hawke smolder at each other through the runtime. Sadly, there’s no word yet on when us plebeians will be able to stream Strange Way of Life, but we’ll keep our clicking fingers ready.
