Incendio en la galería de arte GMAR y las oficinas de La Semana / A fire damages Gmar Art Gallery and La Semana’s offices

La galería de arte GMAR, especializada en obras hispanas y souvenirs ubicada en el corazón del barrio Kendall-Whittier, se prendió fuego el pasado fin de semana  tras el incendio de una de las paredes del restaurante mexicano Calaveras, adyacente al local.

El siniestro comenzó como un cortocircuito en una de las paredes compartidas por el restaurante y la galería, que también funciona como oficina central de este periódico.

Marina Salgado, propietaria de GMAR explicó que el incendio ocurrió en la madrigada del sábado 10 de diciembre, y como no había empleados en el momento del incidente los bomberos tuvieron que abrirse paso por la puerta de atrás.

“Cuando llegamos al lugar vimos que había una pared prendida fuego”, dijo Chris Baldwin, del departamento de bomberos de Tulsa. “En mi opinión el incendio se desató en un tablero eléctrico, pero la investigación aun no ha concluido”, explicó el bombero. “Desafortunadamente los daños del agua que tuvimos que tirar son considerables. Habían murales dentro de la galería que tuvimos que mover para acceder a la pared”, agregó Baldwin adhiriendo que se intentó dañar la propiedad lo menos posible.

Salgado dijo que la tienda se estaba preparando para las ventas navideñas de último minuto, pero con el humo y el agua, es probable que no vuelva a abrir sus puertas hasta la navidad. Las piezas exhibidas en la galería son originales, muchas se estropearon con el incendio y probablemente no puedan restaurarse.

“La mayor parte de las obras son únicas en su tipo, incluyendo las de varios artistas locales”, explicó Salgado agregando que las obras que no se dañaron con el agua fueron afectadas de igual manera por el humo y necesitarán costosos tratamientos de limpieza. (La Semana)

A fire damages Gmar Art Gallery and La Semana’s headquarters

TULSA, OK — GMAR Art Gallery, a Latin-themed art gallery and gift shop in the Kendall-Whitter district, sustained damage last weekend when a fire broke out in the wall of Calaveras, an adjacent Mexican Restaurant.

The fire apparently started in the wiring in a wall shared by Calaveras and the gallery, which is also where the offices of this newspaper are located.

Marina Salgado, the proprietor of GMAR, explained that the fire happened in the early hours of  Saturday, December 10th, and because no one was working at the time firefighters had to force their way in through a back door.

“There was a fire in the wall whenever we made an entry in the building,” said Chris Baldwin of the Tulsa Fire Department. “In my opinion the fire started in an electrical box, but there is an investigation ongoing.”

The firefighter explained that the necessary actions in putting out the fire can also cause damage.

“Unfortunately there is a decent amount of damage from the water we had to spray, and there were murals inside the art gallery we had to move out of the way to access the wall,” said Baldwin, adding that they tried to keep the damage to a minimum.

Salgado said the shop had been gearing up for a last minute rush of holiday sales, but because of smoke and water damage they will not likely be able to reopen before Christmas. Much of the original artwork displayed in the gallery was damaged, and some perhaps cannot be salvaged.

“Most of this art is one of a kind, including many from local artists,” Salgado explained, adding that even the art that wasn’t ruined by water used by the firefighters to contain the blaze has smoke damage and will require expensive professional cleaning. (La Semana)
