El gobierno de Honduras confirmó el fallecimiento de Ángel Eduardo Maradiaga Espinoza; un joven que había ingresado en un albergue para menores no acompañados de Safety Harbor, en el estado de Florida, EE UU, el pasado 5 de mayo.

A través de un comunicado, el ejecutivo hondureño aseguró que fue este jueves cuando las autoridades estadounidenses le notificaron lo ocurrido.

Según la información recibida, trasladaron al adolescente un hospital después de encontrarlo inconsciente. Tras una hora de intentos de reanimación cardiopulmonar, lo declararon muerto.

Las autoridades estadounidenses confirmaron este viernes la noticia. Sin embargo, no proporcionaron más detalles «debido a temas de privacidad y seguridad», según expusieron en un comunicado.

«Como suele ocurrir en cualquier situación relacionada con la muerte o un problema de salud grave de un niño no acompañado, la Oficina de Reasentamiento de Refugiados (…) está analizando los detalles del caso, incluyendo sus antecedentes médicos. Se está realizando una autopsia», se lee en el texto.

Exigen investigación

El gobierno de Honduras solicitó que se realice «una investigación exhaustiva del caso para esclarecer este hecho y de existir alguna responsabilidad se aplique todo el peso de la ley», tuiteó el canciller de ese país, Enrique Reina.

«Este terrible hecho subraya la importancia de trabajar conjuntamente en la agenda bilateral migratoria sobre la situación de los menores no acompañados, para encontrar soluciones, tema que ha sido abordado por la presidenta Xiomara Castro a varios niveles con los EE UU», agregó.

Los funcionarios fronterizos deben transferir a la ORR a los menores no acompañados dentro de las 72 horas siguientes a su llegada.

La noticia de la muerte de este adolescente hondureño llega en un momento en el que EE UU está implementando nuevas políticas de asilo y deportación para migrantes, después de que en la medianoche del jueves al viernes expirara el Título 42.

Desde el inicio de la pandemia de covid-19, el Título 42 permitió la expulsión inmediata de miles de migrantes que ingresaban a EE UU de manera irregular. Principalmente los devolvían a México sin oportunidad de presentar su caso para solicitar asilo.

The government of Honduras confirmed the death of Ángel Eduardo Maradiaga Espinoza; a young man who had been admitted to a shelter for unaccompanied minors in Safety Harbor, in the state of Florida, USA, on May 5.

Through a statement, the Honduran executive assured that it was this Thursday that the US authorities notified him of what happened.

According to the information received, the teenager was transferred to a hospital after finding him unconscious. After an hour of cardiopulmonary resuscitation attempts, he was declared dead.

The US authorities confirmed the news this Friday. However, they did not provide more details “due to privacy and security issues,” as they said in a statement.

“As usually happens in any situation related to the death or a serious health problem of an unaccompanied child, the Office of Resettlement of Refugees (…) is analyzing the details of the case, including their medical history. An autopsy is being carried out,” reads the text.

They demand investigation

The government of Honduras requested that “an exhaustive investigation of the case be carried out to clarify this fact and if there is any responsibility, the full weight of the law be applied,” tweeted the chancellor of that country, Enrique Reina.

“This terrible fact underlines the importance of working together on the bilateral migration agenda on the situation of unaccompanied minors, to find solutions, an issue that has been addressed by President Xiomara Castro at various levels with the United States,” he added.

The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) of the U.S. Department of Health is responsible for housing and caring for migrant children and adolescents who arrive at the U.S.-Mexico border without legal guardians.

Border officials must transfer unaccompanied minors to the ORR within 72 hours of their arrival.

The news of the death of this Honduran teenager comes at a time when the United States is implementing new asylum and deportation policies for migrants, after Title 42 expired at midnight from Thursday to Friday.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Title 42 allowed the immediate expulsion of thousands of migrants who entered the United States irregularly. They were mainly returned to Mexico without an opportunity to present their case to apply for asylum.
