Por Geert De Clercq – PARÍS, 9 de junio (Reuters) – Un peregrino de hoy en día en un recorrido a pie por las catedrales de Francia dijo a los periodistas el viernes que su fe católica le dio la fuerza para luchar contra un hombre que apuñaló a cuatro niños en un parque de Annecy.

Apodado “el héroe de la mochila” – “le héros au sac a dos” – por los medios de comunicación, el joven de 24 años que solo dio su nombre cuando Henri dijo que estaba cerca de un patio de recreo cuando vio al hombre atacando a los niños en un cochecito mientras su madre intentaba protegerlos el jueves.

Era la voluntad de Dios que estuviera allí y fuera capaz de intervenir, sugirió.

“Todo lo que sé es que no estuve allí por casualidad. En mi viaje a las catedrales me crucé con este hombre y he actuado instintivamente. Era impensable no hacer nada”, dijo el estudiante de filosofía y gestión a CNEWS.

Las imágenes de vídeo lo muestran tratando de bloquear al agresor con una de sus dos mochilas, persiguiendo al hombre hasta el patio de recreo y lanzando una de sus bolsas al atacante.

El devoto católico dijo que había sentido una fuerte fuerza dentro de él que lo empujaba a actuar.

“Me dejo guiar por la providencia y la Virgen María. Me despedí. Ellos decidirían lo que pasaría”, dijo.

Henri dijo que otros jóvenes también habían perseguido al atacante. “Intentamos asustarlo y dejar claro que no podía hacer lo que quería”, dijo.

La policía dijo que arrestaron a un refugiado sirio por el ataque y les dijeron a los periodistas que el sospechoso llevaba una insignia cristiana.

Cuando se le preguntó sobre la sugerencia de que el atacante podría haber sido cristiano, Henri dijo que no tenía sentido.

“Es profundamente poco cristiano atacar a los vulnerables. Toda la civilización cristiana sobre la que se construye nuestro país es un mensaje de caballeros para defender a las viudas y a los huérfanos. Creo que, por el contrario, algo muy malo lo habitó”.

Henri, que se reunirá con el presidente Emmanuel Macron más tarde el viernes, dijo que tuvo que revisar los horribles detalles del ataque durante una declaración de tres horas a la policía el jueves.

“Ahora tengo todas estas imágenes horribles en mi cabeza. Necesito tratar de convertir eso en algo positivo”, dijo.

Continuaría su recorrido a pie de meses y esperaba mostrar a los seguidores de las redes sociales “cómo la belleza de las catedrales puede nutrirnos y ayudarnos a hacer lo correcto”.

“Debido a estos eventos, podré llegar a más personas. Le doy gracias al cielo”, le dijo a la televisión BFM.

French ‘backpack hero’ says his faith gave him strength to fight knifeman

By Geert De Clercq – PARIS, June 9 (Reuters) – A modern-day pilgrim on a walking tour of France’s cathedrals told journalists on Friday his Catholic faith gave him the strength to fight a man who stabbed four children in a park in Annecy.

Dubbed “the backpack hero” – “le héros au sac a dos” – by media, the 24-year-old who only gave his name as Henri said he was near a playground when he saw the man attacking children in a stroller as their mother tried to shield them on Thursday.

It was God’s will that he was there and able to intervene, he suggested.

“All I know is that I was not there by chance. On my journey to the cathedrals I crossed paths with this man and I have acted instinctively. It was unthinkable to do nothing,” the philosophy and management student told CNEWS.

Video footage shows him trying to block the assailant with one of his two backpacks, pursuing the man into the playground and throwing one of his bags at the attacker.

The devout Catholic said he had felt a strong force inside him pushing him to act.

“I let myself be guided by providence and the Virgin Mary. I said my adieu. They would decide what would happen,” he said.

Henri said other young people had also pursued the attacker. “We tried to scare him and make clear he could not do what he wanted,” he said.

Police said they arrested a Syrian refugee over the attack and told journalists the suspect had been carrying Christian insignia.

Asked about the suggestion that attacker may have been Christian, Henri said it made no sense.

“It is profoundly unchristian to attack the vulnerable. The entire Christian civilisation on which our country is built is a knightly message to defend widows and orphans. I think that, on the contrary, something very bad inhabited him.”

Henri – who is set to meet President Emmanuel Macron later on Friday – said he had to revisit the gruesome details of the attack during a three-hour statement to police on Thursday.

“I now have all these horrible images in my head. I need to try and turn that into something positive,” he said.

He would continue his months-long walking tour and hoped to show social media followers “how the beauty of the cathedrals can nourish us and help us do the right thing”.

“Because of these events, I will be able to reach more people. I thank heaven,” he told BFM television.
