Creado a partir de imágenes generadas por ordenador combinadas con un «efecto acuarela», el filme está ambientado en el ficticio reino medieval de Rosas y tiene a una princesa como protagonista.

En las escenas presentadas al público en el festival internacional de animación, aparece Asha, una joven mestiza de 17 años destinada a convertirse en aprendiz del rey Magnífico, capaz de hacer realidad los deseos de sus súbditos.

Wish se estrenará en cines y «no llegará enseguida a Disney+ [la plataforma de streaming de la compañía] porque estas películas están hechas para cines, especialmente ésta, en cinemascope. Así lo explicó a AFP su creadora, Jennifer Lee, que también es directora creativa de Disney Animation Studios.

La película nació del deseo de Jennifer Lee y Chris Buck, el tándem que ya dirigió Frozen, de celebrar el centenario de Disney en 2023.

«Nos preguntamos cómo podíamos rendir homenaje a 100 años de historias. Al mismo tiempo refrescarlas y renovarlas», explicó Lee, que quería escribir un «cuento de hadas original», no adaptado de un libro.

El filme, que combina tecnología 3D con 2D, estará precedido en los cines un cortometraje llamado Once upon a studio en el que aparecen unos 500 personajes de Disney.
