by Catherine James – TULSA, Okla. — When Our Blood Institute says giving blood saves lives, they aren’t exaggerating.

“It’s just a great program. It works. There are so many people out there that need blood, and my son being a cancer patient, I mean, it’s wonderful, it’s really helped him out tremendously,” said Rob Aloisio. He owns and operates Mondo’s Italian Ristorante in Brookside.

His 21-year-old son Roman was recently diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that’s required multiple blood transfusions.

“It’s heartbreaking, you just can’t see, you know, your child suffering, and you know, he dropped all the way down to 85lbs with the treatments,” Aloisio said. “But, once he got the blood transfusions, his platelets came up, he’s, you know, doing great. He’s coming in here now eating like crazy. Now, he’s up to 102lbs.”

Aloisio says it’s all thanks to people giving blood.

To help boost the local blood supply, OBI partnered with the Tulsa Drillers to host a blood drive at OneOk Field on Friday night.

And, before the Drillers face off against the Wichita Wind Surge, Roman and his dad will throw the first pitch.

“He’s just a tough young man, you know. He’s got such a positive attitude. And, the love and support that he sees from the Tulsa community and family and friends had really uplifted him,” Aloisio said.

The Blood Drive will be held this Friday July 7 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Elgin in front of ONEOK Field.

“Es un gran programa. Funciona. Hay tanta gente por ahí que necesita sangre, y mi hijo es un paciente de cáncer, quiero decir, es maravilloso, realmente lo ha ayudado enormemente”, dijo Rob Aloisio. Posee y opera el restaurante italiano de Mondo en Brookside.

Su hijo Roman, de 21 años, fue diagnosticado recientemente con una forma rara de cáncer que requiere múltiples transfusiones de sangre.

“Es desgarrador, simplemente no puedes ver, ya sabes, a tu hijo sufriendo, y ya sabes, bajó a 85 libras con los tratamientos”, dijo Aloisio. “Pero, una vez que recibió las transfusiones de sangre, le subieron las plaquetas, ya sabes, lo está haciendo muy bien. Ahora viene aquí comiendo como un loco. Ahora, pesa hasta 102 libras”.

Aloisio dice que todo es gracias a la gente que da sangre.

Para ayudar a aumentar el suministro de sangre local, OBI se asoció con los Tulsa Drillers para organizar una campaña de donación de sangre en OneOk Field el viernes por la noche.

Y, antes de que los Drillers se enfrenten al Wichita Wind Surge, Roman y su padre lanzarán el primer lanzamiento.

“Es solo un joven duro, ya sabes. Tiene una actitud muy positiva. Y, el amor y el apoyo que ve de la comunidad de Tulsa, la familia y los amigos realmente lo habían elevado”, dijo Aloisio.

La campaña de donación de sangre se llevará a cabo este viernes 7 de julio de 2 p.m. a 8 p.m. en Elgin frente a ONEOK Field.
