Washington — Más de 91 millones de personas en Estados Unidos se encuentran bajo alerta de calores extremos este martes cuando se esperan temperaturas récord en el sur del país, mientras se prevén lluvias e inundaciones en el noreste.

El Sistema Nacional Integrado de Información de Calor y Salud (NIHHIS, por sus siglas en inglés), indicó que el 27 % de la población se encuentra en regiones con calores extremos, un leve alivio comparado con el 31 % el lunes y el 34 % el domingo.

El mapa de NIHHIS muestra vastas regiones contemperaturas excepcionalmente altas desde California a Arizona, Nuevo México, la región central de Texas y el nordeste de Tennessee.

El oeste y gran parte del sur de Estados Unidos se ven asfixiados esta semana por una ola de calor “extremadamente peligrosa”, según el servicio meteorológico nacional, con el termómetro marcando hasta 47 °C en algunas ciudades.

“Se espera que una ola de calor abrumadora y extremadamente peligrosa azote el oeste este fin de semana, así como partes del sur”, advirtió el Servicio Meteorológico Nacional estadounidense (NWS) en un boletín divulgado el sábado por la mañana.

“Es probable que se registren varios récords de temperatura, y los problemas de calidad del aire serán habituales en varias regiones de Estados Unidos”, añadió el NWS.

Y no es probable que el alivio llegue pronto para los más de 90 millones de estadounidenses bajo alerta de altas temperaturas, ya que se espera que el domo de calor “permanezca estacionario sobre (estas regiones) durante los próximos días”, pronosticó el NWS.

En Phoenix, capital de Arizona, uno de los estados más afectados, en el suroeste de Estados Unidos, se esperaban 47 °C a última hora de la tarde, en lo que iba a ser el 16º día consecutivo de máximas por encima de 43 °C.

Parte del estado se encuentra bajo nivel de alerta “magenta”, un “nivel de calor extremo raro y/o de larga duración” que representa el nivel de alerta más alto del NWS.

En el sur de California (oeste), los bomberos luchan desde el viernes contra varios incendios muy violentos que han arrasado más de 1.214 hectáreas y provocado la evacuación de la población.

Según el climatólogo Daniel Swain, de la Universidad de California en Los Ángeles, el nivel del mercurio en el Valle de la Muerte podría igualar o incluso superar la temperatura del aire más alta jamás registrada de forma fiable en la Tierra, es decir, 54,4 °C registrados en el mismo lugar en 2020 y 2021, según varios expertos.

Otras regiones de Estados Unidos también corren riesgo de sufrir inclemencias meteorológicas.

“Tormentas eléctricas de fuertes a violentas, lluvias torrenciales e inundaciones son posibles en varios lugares, en particular y desgraciadamente en Nueva Inglaterra, que ya está saturada” por las recientes precipitaciones, según el NWS.

Washington — More than 91 million people in the United States were under extreme heat alert Tuesday as record temperatures are expected in the South, while rain and flooding are expected in the Northeast.

The National Integrated Heat and Health Information System (NIHHIS) indicated that 27% of the population is in regions with extreme heat, a slight relief compared to 31% on Monday and 34% on Sunday.

NIHHIS’s map shows vast regions with exceptionally high temperatures from California to Arizona, New Mexico, central Texas and northeast Tennessee.

The west and much of the southern United States are in the throes of an “extremely dangerous” heat wave this week, according to the national weather service, with temperatures reaching as high as 120°F (47°C) in some cities.

“An overwhelming and extremely dangerous heat wave is expected to hit the West this weekend, as well as parts of the South,” the US National Weather Service (NWS) warned in a bulletin released Saturday morning.

“Several temperature records are likely to be set, and air quality issues will be common in several regions of the United States,” the NWS added.

And relief isn’t likely to come anytime soon for the more than 90 million Americans under high-temperature watch, as the heat dome is expected to “remain stationary over (these regions) for the next several days,” the NWS forecast.

In Phoenix, the capital of Arizona, one of the most affected states, in the southwestern United States, 47° C was expected late in the afternoon, in what was to be the 16th consecutive day of highs above 43° C.

Part of the state is under the “magenta” alert level, a “rare and/or long-lasting extreme heat level” that represents the highest alert level in the NWS.

In southern California, firefighters have been fighting several very violent fires since Friday that have devastated more than 1,214 hectares and caused the evacuation of the population.

According to climatologist Daniel Swain of the University of California, Los Angeles, the level of mercury in Death Valley could equal or even exceed the highest air temperature ever reliably recorded on Earth, or 54.4 °C registered in the same place in 2020 and 2021, according to several experts.

Other regions of the United States are also at risk from severe weather.

“Strong to violent thunderstorms, torrential rains, and flooding are possible in a number of locations, particularly and unfortunately in New England, which is already saturated” from recent rainfall, according to the NWS.
