La delantera Sophia Smith lideró con un doblete a la renovada selección de Estados Unidos, que inició con una cómoda victoria 3-0 ante Vietnam su andadura en busca de un tercer Mundial de Fútbol femenino consecutivo.

Smith, una de las seis integrantes del once inicial de Estados Unidos en debutar en una Copa del Mundo, terminó con un tiro cruzado una precisa jugada para abrir el marcador en el Eden Park de Auckland en el minuto 14.

En el tiempo añadido de la primera mitad, la delantera de 22 años volvió a ver la portería, apenas minutos después de que la veterana Alex Morgan fallara un penalti.

Designada mejor jugadora del torneo estadounidense en 2022, Smith volvió a ser decisiva en el tercer gol, en el que asistió a la capitana Lindsey Horan para que esta anotara en el minuto 77.

Un rato antes había entrado en la cancha Megan Rapinoe, emblema de esta selección y del fútbol femenino que consiguió así su partido número 200 como internacional.

«Creo que fue un buen comienzo para nuestro equipo en este torneo. También sé que tenemos mucho más que podemos ofrecer, mucho más que hacer, pequeñas cosas en las que trabajar», dijo Smith.

Las vigentes campeonas tienen margen de mejora en los siguientes partidos del grupo E contra Portugal y contra las subcampeonas de la anterior edición, Países Bajos.

Sin embargo, era una experiencia nueva para gran parte de la plantilla, empezando por el mismo entrenador Andonovski, que debutó en un partido mundialista tras suceder a Jill Ellis en el banquillo después de la victoria en Francia-2019.

«Desgraciadamente no aprovechamos todas las grandes oportunidades que creamos y eso es algo en lo que tenemos que concentrarnos en la preparación del próximo partido», reconoció Andonovski.

Con Rapinoe en el banquillo en el que será su torneo de despedida, Smith y la joven de 21 años Trinity Rodman flanquearon a Morgan en el ataque en su primera participación en un Mundial.

Penalti fallado

Para Rodman, hija de la antigua estrella de la NBA Dennis Rodman, fue un debut accidentado, precisando de una larga asistencia médica por un golpe en el primer minuto de juego.

No tardó Estados Unidos en adueñarse del encuentro e inclinarlo a su favor. Horan filtró un pase a Morgan que de espuela asistió a Smith para que la joven delantera cruzara el esférico a la red.

Las ocasiones se sucedían una tras otra en el área de Vietnam, pero el marcador no se movió ni siquiera cuando la árbitra, asistida por el videoarbitraje, pitó un penalti por un derribo a Rodman dentro del área poco antes del descanso.

Pero la guardameta vietnamita, Tran Thi Kim Thanh, destacada en la primera mitad, consiguió repeler el pobre disparo de Morgan.

Cuando parecía que Vietnam iba a mantener el marcador hasta el intermedio, Smith enganchó un despeje al borde del área y escurrió la pelota entre las piernas de la guardameta.

En primera instancia el gol fue anulado por fuera de juego de Morgan al intentar rematar un primer centro, pero finalmente fue concedido tras otra larga revisión con el VAR.

Rapinoe, con el pelo teñido de azul, entró para gozo de los espectadores pasada la hora de juego junto a Rose Lavelle, las dos goleadoras de la final de 2019.

También hubo tiempo para el debut de la adolescente Alyssa Thompson, justo antes de que Smith aprovechara un balón largo de Julie Ertz para asistir desde la línea de fondo a Horan.
