Las tecnológicas de EEUU ponen freno al trabajo remoto / Technology companies in the US require staff to return to offices
Technology companies in the US require staff to return to offices
From titans like Amazon and Meta to the dating app Grindr, specialized in the LGBTQ community Grindr, American technology companies have put the brakes on remote work and require their workers to return to work in their offices at least three days a week.
This week a rule came into force requiring employees of Meta (parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) to work from the company’s offices at least three days a week.
Meta, like many other companies of all types, first expanded its remote work policy to all of its full-time employees in June 2021 due to the pandemic.
At the time, Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg said the company learned that “good work can be done anywhere” and that he was “optimistic that remote work at scale was possible, particularly as the presence of video conferencing and virtual reality continues to improve.”
But since then, many tech giants, such as Amazon and Google parent Alphabet, have reversed their policies on remote work.
In late August, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told his employees who intend to work from home and don’t want to return to the office even three days a week that that “isn’t going to work for them” and that they can leave. if they do not agree, as company sources confirmed to EFE.
Amazon ordered its employees to return to the office three days a week starting in May, but at the end of that month hundreds of workers signed a petition against the mandate and went on strike to ask the company for more flexibility with remote work.
At one meeting, Jassy told workers: “The time to disagree and compromise is past,” adding that “if you can’t compromise (…) you probably don’t fit at Amazon because we go back to the office at least three days a week.” week”.
From campus hotels to layoffs
Google stood out for its originality when it came to making office work more popular and this summer it is offering office workers at its Mountain View campus in California a promotion to pay $99 a night to stay in a hotel. from its premises, according to internal company documentation seen by CNBC.
Last year, Google asked most employees to work from the office three days a week, but employees have repeatedly complained about the high costs of housing near offices.
Although the most extreme case so far is that of Grindr, which last month gave its remote workers two weeks to commit or work from one of its offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco or Chicago two days a week starting October or lose their jobs on August 31.
According to the Grindr union, which was created this summer, 82 of the dating app’s 178 employees were fired after rejecting the mandate. Which is equivalent to 46% of the staff.
