Aladino llega a Tulsa de la mano de Broadway / Broadway’s Aladdin comes to Tulsa

Dicen que el arte trasciende fronteras y que no hay límite para las buenas historias. Y nada mejor para comprobarlo que la nueva puesta en escena de Aladino, un espectáculo para toda la familia que llegará a Tulsa a fines de Septiembre y que cuenta con protagonistas latinos. De la mano del gran compositor Alan Menken, el liricista Chad Beguelin y el coreógrafo Casey Nicholaw, Aladino se sube a los escenarios de Broadway para demostrar que la fantasía puede ser realidad.
Entre su elenco se encuentra la mexicana Sonia Monroe Fernández, oriunda de Coahuila, quien en una conversación con La Semana vaticinó lo que podemos esperar del show.
“Hace dos años que soy parte de Aladdin. Audicioné en México antes de la pandemia y tuvimos que esperar para lanzar la obra en el 2021. Después de un año y ocho meses en el show pedí un intercambio y finalmente logré ser parte de la gira aquí en Estados Unidos, donde hago muchos personajes durante la obra”, explicó la artista.
Sonia dio sus primeros pasos en el mundo del arte a los 12 años. Impulsada por su madre quien la inscribió en clases de baile y actuación, siempre supo que lo suyo eran las tablas. “Yo amaba ver las películas musicales, mis mayores influencias eran Hairspray, Chicago y Vaselina, y quería hacer eso mismo. Y justo en mi escuela secundaria abrieron clases de comedia musical, y así arranqué. Cuando cumplí 18 le dije a mis padres: quiero estudiar esto, y me fui a México a capacitarme y dedicarme de lleno a mi sueño”, contó sobre sus primeros pasos.
Hoy, Sonia disfruta de poder narrar la historia de Aladino y hacerlo en un idioma que no es el suyo, siendo el bilingüismo una fuente de oportunidades laborales inimaginables. “ Es una bendición y una fortuna poder estar haciendo esto cada noche, sabiendo que en el publico hay mucha gente que comparte mi cultura”, reconoció.
Aladino se presentara en el Tulsa Pac entre el 26 de septiembre y el 1ro de octubre para luego dirigirse a Carolina del Norte y continuar con la gira hasta el 2024.
Mientras tanto Sonia sueña con hacerse camino en Estados Unidos y conseguir el premio máximo:
llegar a Broadway. “Es mi mayor sueno, poder presentarme en alguno de los teatros de la calle Broadway, y saber que se puede vivir del arte y actuar en distintas partes del mundo. Se que extrañaré a mi familia, pero ellos están orgullosos de que este aquí cumpliendo mis sueños, porque como mis padres siempre me dijeron mis sueños son los de ellos”.
A todos aquellos entusiastas del arte dispuestos a intentarlo Sonia les dice: “Confíen en si mismo y accionen por eso que aman, sepan que todos tenemos algo especial y ese es el poder que nos hace distintos”, concluyó.

Broadway’s Aladdin comes to Tulsa

They say the arts can transcend borders and that there are no boundaries for good stories. The Broadway production of Aladdin seems to corroborate the statement, a show created for all the family that will come to Tulsa by the end of September with a multicultural cast and a story that warms the heart when revisited.
With songs of the famous composer Alan Menken and lyricist Chad Beguelin, Aladdin brings Broadway closer to home with the choreographies of Casey Nicholaw, proving that the big screen can also be transformed into musical theater.
Among the cast is Sonia Monroe Fernandez, a Mexican artist born in Coahuila who spoke with La Semana about the show and the life behind the curtains.
“I have been part of Aladdin for two years now,” she explained. “I first auditioned in Mexico before the pandemic and had to wait until 2021 to be able to perform. And after being a part of the Latin cast back in Mexico, I asked for an exchange and became a part of the American tour. I play lots of characters in the show, I am part of the ensemble.”
Sonia took her first steps in the musical theatre world when she was 12. Encouraged by her mother, who had always sent her to ballet classes and acting, she knew right along her talents appeared when on stage.
“I adored watching musical films like Hairspray, Chicago, and Grease, and wanted to do the same thing. I found a musical comedy class at school and decided to enroll, and from that moment on I knew I wanted to do that forever,” she recalled. “So, when I turned 18 I told my parents I was going to study acting and moved to Mexico City to pursue my dream.”
Today Sonia enjoys being able to tell the story of Aladdin in a language that is not her first, and admits being bilingual has opened a myriad of working opportunities.
“It is a blessing and a fortune standing on stage every night knowing that there are people who share my culture and my roots among the audience,” she observed.
Aladdin will be performed at Tulsa PAC from September the 26th to October 1st. The tour will continue to North Carolina and other states until May 2024.
With her Aladdin roles, Sonia dreams of making the musical an entry ticket to the world of Broadway.
“It is my biggest dream to perform on any of the Broadway stages,” she shared, “and eventually to make a living from musical theatre and be able to present my art all around the world. I know I will miss my folks, but they have always told me my dreams were also theirs.”
To all those young artists willing to give it a try Sonia recommends: “Believe in yourselves and act according to what you love, knowing that each of us have something special, a power that makes us different.”
