OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma Contemporary y el consulado de México en Oklahoma City han anunciado una colaboración inaugural para encargar e instalar un altar del día de los muertos en el centro de las artes. El renombrado artista chicano Narciso Argüelles creará la instalación del altar.

La festividad mexicana del día de los muertos celebra la vida de los que han fallecido en lugar de llorar su partida. Esta tradición nos permite conectar con los difuntos y mantenerlos presentes en nuestras vidas mediante la instalación de un altar en el que se exponen artículos culturales y sus comidas, bebidas y efectos personales favoritos.

Esta tradición trasciende fronteras, enriquece la cultura local y fortalece el diálogo intercultural.

La Ofrenda para los Olvidados / The Altar for The Forgotten del artista chicano radicado en Oklahoma City Narciso Argüelles celebrará las vidas de los emigrantes que perdieron la vida en el intento de empezar de nuevo en Estados Unidos. Esta instalación celebra el valor y la determinación de los inmigrantes que se esfuerzan por buscar mejores oportunidades en nuevas tierras y honra sus contribuciones a las nuevas comunidades y a la sociedad civil.

Esta asociación ha sido facilitada amablemente en colaboración con la agencia de desarrollo de la comunidad latina de Oklahoma City.

La Ofrenda para los Olvidados / The Altar for The Forgotten podrá verse en Oklahoma Contemporary del 27 de octubre al 20 de noviembre, con entrada gratuita 11 a. m. a 6 p. m. los lunes, miércoles y viernes a domingo, y de 11 a. m. a 9 p. m. los jueves.

Esta representación consular del gobierno de México inauguró sus operaciones el 20 de mayo de este año, para atender a una creciente comunidad en todo el estado de Oklahoma que se acerca a las 400,000 personas de origen mexicano de primera y segunda generación.

El consulado ofrece una amplia variedad de servicios y programas educativos y preventivos para ayudar a esta comunidad a tener un mejor desarrollo y potencializar el impacto positivo de sus contribuciones a Oklahoma.

Esta institución también trabaja para promover un mejor entendimiento de México, su gente y su cultura; la relevancia de su relación bilateral con Estados Unidos, y para construir puentes culturales, económicos y sociales con Oklahoma.

Narciso Argüelles creció en México, cerca de la frontera con Estados Unidos. Cuando aún era estudiante universitario en la Universidad de California en San Diego, Argüelles empezó a colaborar con el internacionalmente conocido Border Art/Workshop/Taller de Arte Fronterizo y pronto se convirtió en miembro de pleno derecho. Ha expuesto en la 9ª Bienal de Sidney, la 1ª Bienal de Johannesburgo (Sudáfrica), la Bienal Alternativa de Tucumán (Argentina) y por todo Estados Unidos (Nueva York, Nuevo México, New Haven, Tulsa, Oklahoma y Los Ángeles). Argüelles ha realizado varias residencias artísticas y educativas, incluida la docencia y la práctica creativa en el extranjero, en Estambul (Turquía).

Además de su práctica artística y su compromiso con la educación, Argüelles ha cofundado o dirigido varias organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro, entre ellas Inclusion in Art. En la actualidad, Narciso Argüelles es profesor universitario y de arte en un instituto de Oklahoma.

Mexican consulate sponsors Day of the Dead altar in OKC

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma Contemporary and The Consulate of Mexico in Oklahoma City have announced an inaugural collaboration to commission and install a Day of the Dead altar in the Arts Center. Renowned Chicano artist Narciso Argüelles will create the Altar installation.

The Mexican holiday Day of the Dead celebrates the lives of those who have passed away rather than mourning their departure. This tradition allows us to connect with the deceased and keep them present in our lives through the installation of an altar that displays cultural items and their favorite foods, drinks, and personal effects.

This tradition transcends borders, enriches the local culture and strengthens cross-cultural dialogue.

La Ofrenda para los Olvidados / The Altar for The Forgotten by Oklahoma City based Chicano artist Narciso Argüelles will celebrate the lives of migrants who lost their lives in the attempt to begin anew in the United States. This installation celebrates the courage and determination of immigrants who strive to seek better opportunities in new lands and honors their contributions to new communities and civil society.

This partnership has been facilitated graciously in collaboration with the Oklahoma City Latino Community Development Agency.

La Ofrenda para los Olvidados / The Altar for The Forgotten will be on view at Oklahoma Contemporary from October 27 to November 20, with free admission 11am to 6pm Monday, Wednesday, Friday through Sunday, and 11am-9pm on Thursday.

This consular representation of the Government of Mexico inaugurated its operation on May 20 of this year, to serve a growing community throughout the State of Oklahoma that nears 400,000 people of Mexican origin of first and second generation.

The Consulate offers a wide variety of services and education and preventive programs to help this community have a better development and potentiate the positive impact of its contributions to Oklahoma.

This institution also works to promote a better understanding of Mexico, its people and culture; the relevance of its bilateral relationship with the United States, and to build cultural, economic and social bridges with Oklahoma.

Narciso Argüelles grew up in Mexico near the U.S. border. While still an undergraduate student at the University of California, San Diego, Argüelles started collaborating with the internationally known Border Art/Workshop/Taller de Arte Fronterizo and soon became a full member. He has exhibited work at the 9th Biennale of Sydney, The First Johannesburg Biennale in South Africa, The Alternative Biennale in Tucuman Argentina, and all over the United States, including New York City, New Mexico, New Haven, Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Los Angeles. Argüelles has held several art and educational residencies, including teaching and creative practice overseas in Istanbul, Turkey.

In addition to his artistic practice and commitment to education, Argüelles has co-founded or directed several not-for-profit organizations, including Inclusion in Art. Currently, Narciso Argüelles is a college instructor and high school art teacher in Oklahoma.
