Miami Beach se prepara para honrar a sus veteranos el sábado 11 de noviembre en una celebración que promete ser la más grande del sur de la Florida, de acuerdo a medios locales. El evento, que se llevará a cabo en Ocean Drive, comenzará a las 11:11 a.m. para coincidir con la fecha y hora del armisticio que marcó el fin de la Primera Guerra Mundial. Esta fecha ha adquirido un significado más amplio al rendir homenaje a los veteranos estadounidenses de todas las guerras.

El evento también incluirá un picnic familiar gratuito, con la colaboración de negocios locales como CJ’s Crab Shack, Raising Cane’s y Starbucks.

El crecimiento en la participación en el desfile es notable, pasó de ser 50 personas en sus inicios a más de 2 mil en la actualidad, incluye estudiantes, organizaciones, empresas y funcionarios públicos. El programa contará con presentaciones por parte de la Guardia de Honor del Departamento de Bomberos y la Policía de Miami Beach, el recital del Juramento a la Bandera, el himno nacional y un momento de silencio en honor a los veteranos de la Primera Guerra Mundial.

Además, oficiales militares del Comando Sur y del Auxiliar de la Guardia Costera de Estados Unidos darán discursos. La ceremonia también contará con un saludo de 21 disparos, la actuación de un corneta de Taps y un reconocimiento especial al Grupo de Girl Scouts 1239 por su servicio.

El “Veterans Day” (Día de los Veteranos en español), es una conmemoración federal anual en los Estados Unidos que se realiza cada 11 de noviembre. Este día está dedicado a rendir homenaje y reconocimiento a aquellos que han prestado servicio en las Fuerzas Armadas estadounidenses. Coincide con el Día del Recuerdo, el cual se celebra en otros países para recordar el fin de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, un conflicto en el que fallecieron millones y en el que Estados Unidos registró más de 100 mil bajas.

Si el 11 de noviembre ocurre en fin de semana, el feriado se traslada al viernes si es sábado, o al lunes si es domingo.

Los veteranos son exmilitares que han sobrevivido a guerras o conflictos bélicos, sirvieron a su país con honor y coraje. A menudo enfrentan desafíos tanto físicos como psicológicos derivados de su servicio, lo cual puede complicar su reintegración a la vida civil.

En la actualidad, Estados Unidos posee la población más grande de veteranos de guerra, son alrededor de 23 millones de personas.

Origen del Día de los Veteranos

La celebración del Día de los Veteranos tiene sus orígenes en la proclamación del Presidente Woodrow Wilson, quien en 1919 marcó el 11 de noviembre como Día del Armisticio, al conmemorar el primer aniversario del acuerdo de paz con Alemania que puso fin a la Primera Guerra Mundial en 1918.

En 1938, el Día del Armisticio adquirió un carácter oficial mediante la aprobación de una ley constitucional y reconoce así a los caídos en la Primera Guerra Mundial.

La transformación de la conmemoración se dio en la década de 1940. Raymon Weeks, un veterano de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, propuso expandir el significado del día para incluir a todos los veteranos de guerra. Esta idea fue respaldada por el general Dwight Eisenhower, quien más tarde se convertiría en presidente de los Estados Unidos. Como resultado, en 1947 se celebró el primer Día Nacional de los Veteranos.

Posteriormente, en 1954, una iniciativa liderada por Ed Rees, miembro de la Cámara de Representantes, llevó a que el Congreso estadounidense modificara la denominación de la festividad. Desde entonces, el 1 de junio de ese año, el Día del Armisticio se renombró como Día de los Veteranos, lo que mantiene esta designación hasta nuestros días.
