Julian Assange, fundador de la página de filtraciones WikiLeaks, salió este lunes de la prisión británica en la que estaba recluido y abandonó Reino Unido tras llegar a un acuerdo con el gobierno de EE.UU. que le permitirá evitar ser extraditado a este último país.

Según revelaron documentos judiciales, en las próximas horas Assange se declarará culpable de un delito de espionaje ante una corte de las Islas Marianas del Norte, un territorio estadounidense en el Pacífico, y aceptará una pena de 62 meses de cárcel.

La cadena CBS, socia estadounidense de la BBC, informó que Assange no quedará bajo custodia estadounidense ya que se le reconocerá el tiempo que ha estado encarcelado en Reino Unido. Tiene previsto regresar a Australia, su país de origen, según una carta del Departamento de Justicia de EE.UU.

El fundador de WikiLeaks, de 52 años, se declarará culpable del delito de conspiración para obtener y revelar información de Defensa Nacional.

Assange se encontraba desde hace 5 años encarcelado en Reino Unido, desde donde luchaba para evitar su extradición a EE.UU., cuya Justicia lo requería por la filtración masiva en 2010 por parte de WikiLeaks de documentos gubernamentales confidenciales.

WikiLeaks informó este lunes a través de un comunicado de la liberación de Assange.

“Julián Assange es libre. Salió de la prisión de máxima seguridad de Belmarsh en la mañana del 24 de junio, después de haber pasado allí 1.901 días. El Tribunal Superior de Londres le concedió la libertad bajo fianza y fue liberado en el aeropuerto de Stansted durante la tarde, donde abordó un avión y partió del Reino Unido”, se lee en el comunicado publicado en X.

Su esposa, Stella Assange, dio las gracias en X a sus seguidores “que se han movilizado durante años y años para que esto se haga realidad”.

“Es un torbellino de emociones, estoy eufórica, es increíble, no parece real”, ha dicho la mujer del fundador de WikiLeaks a BBC Radio 4.

Según la esposa, “existe un acuerdo de principio entre Julian y el Departamento de Justicia (de EE.UU.), que deberá ser firmado por un juez en este territorio estadounidense el Pacífico sur. “Una vez que el juez lo firme, ya será formalmente real”, ha dicho Stella Assange, “y será un hombre libre”.

Según la agencia AFP, el avión en el que viaja Assange ha aterrizado a las 5:30 GMT en el aeropuerto de la capital tailandesa, Bangkok, donde hará una escala para repostar antes de partir a la isla Saipan, en el territorio de las Islas Marianas del Norte, a la que está previsto que llegue el miércoles por la mañana.

En la carta que ha hecho pública el Departamento de Justicia de EE.UU. se da a entender que Assange no confía en viajar a Estados Unidos para su declaración de culpabilidad. El fundador de Wikileaks desconfía profundamente de Washington y ha llegado a acusar a funcionarios estadounidenses de conspirar para asesinarlo.

Es por esto que se ha elegido el territorio de las Islas Marianas del Norte, que se encuentran además a tan solo 3.200 km de Australia, adonde regresará tras firmar el acuerdo.

Lucha contra la extradición

Assange y sus abogados habían afirmado durante mucho tiempo que el caso contra él en EE.UU. tenía motivaciones políticas.

En abril, el presidente estadounidense Joe Biden dijo que estaba considerando una solicitud de Australia para retirar el procesamiento de Assange.

Assange se enfrentaba a 18 cargos -la mayoría contemplados en la Ley de Espionaje- por su presunto papel en la filtración masiva en 2010 por parte de WikiLeaks de miles de documentos del gobierno de EE.UU. que revelaban información secreta sobre las guerras de Irak y Afganistán. (BBC)

Assange had been imprisoned in the United Kingdom for 5 years, from where he was fighting to avoid his extradition to the United States, whose Justice required it due to the massive leak in 2010 by WikiLeaks of confidential government documents.

“Julian Assange is free. He left Belmarsh maximum security prison on the morning of June 24, after having spent 1,901 days there. He was granted bail by the High Court in London and released at Stansted Airport. during the afternoon, where he boarded a plane and left the United Kingdom,” reads the statement published in X.

His wife, Stella Assange, thanked her followers in X “who have mobilized for years and years to make this a reality.”

“He is a whirlwind of emotions, I am euphoric, he is incredible, he doesn’t seem real,” the wife of the WikiLeaks founder told BBC Radio 4.

According to the wife, “there is an agreement in principle between Julian and the (US) Department of Justice, which must be signed by a judge in this US territory in the South Pacific. “Once the judge signs it, “He will be formally royal,” said Stella Assange, “and he will be a free man.”

According to the AFP agency, the plane in which Assange is traveling landed at 5:30 GMT at the airport of the Thai capital, Bangkok, where it will make a stopover to refuel before leaving for the island of Saipan, in the territory of the Northern Marianas, in which Assange is scheduled to arrive on Wednesday morning.

In the letter made public by the US Department of Justice, it is implied that Assange does not trust traveling to the United States for his guilty plea. The founder of Wikileaks deeply distrusts Washington and has gone so far as to accuse US officials of conspiring to assassinate him.

This is why he has chosen the territory of the Northern Mariana Islands, which are also only 3,200 km from Australia, where he will return after signing the agreement.

Fight against extradition

Assange and his lawyers had long claimed that the case against him in the US was politically motivated.

In April, US President Joe Biden said he was considering a request from Australia to drop the prosecution of Assange.
