Por Diego Gorostieta – AS USA Latino pudo confirmar que el técnico argentino decidió dar un paso al costado de la institución de Fort Lauderdale tras año y medio al frente del equipo.

La dolorosa eliminación para Inter Miami en los playoffs de la MLS parece comenzar a cobrar factura al interior del club de Fort Lauderdale. De acuerdo con información compartida por el periodista Tom Bogert, y confirmada posteriormente por AS USA Latino, Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino decidió dar un paso al costado del cuadro ganador de la Supporters’ Shield.

Hasta el momento Inter Miami no ha confirmado la salida del estratega argentino; sin embargo, la información que se tiene hasta el momento, misma que fue difundida por el ya citado periodista, el medio Give Me Sport, y posteriormente confirmada por fuentes al interior de ‘Las Garzas’ para AS USA Latino, asegura que debido a motivos personales, el estratega nacido en Rosario optó por no seguir el proyecto tras un año y medio al frente de la institución.

Martino guió a Inter Miami a una temporada récord en la MLS tras imponer una nueva marca de puntos en la historia de la liga en la fase regular (74, suficiente para ganar la Supporters’ Shield); sin embargo, el no conquistar la MLS Cup tras quedar fuera en la primera ronda, más las derrotas en Concacaf Champions Cup (vs. Monterrey) y Leagues Cup (vs. Columbus Crew), parecen influir para que ‘Tata’ haya tomado esta decisión.

Según información de AS USA Latino, Martino contaba con el respaldo de la directiva del club, pese a la temprana eliminación en playoffs de la MLS a manos de Atlanta United. El equipo contemplaba al ‘Tata’ dentro de un proyecto a largo que, a falta de confirmarse su salida, quedaría en entredicho.

La decisión de la salida de Martino de Inter Miami no tiene marcha atrás. Será el próximo viernes cuando, en conferencia de prensa, en presencia del propio ‘Tata’ y de Jorge Más en las instalaciones del club, se anuncie oficialmente el paso al costado por parte del técnico, así como los motivos que lo llevaron a no continuar con el proyecto que se comenzó a construir en las últimas dos temporadas.

By William Gittins – Brought in ahead of the arrival of compatriot Lionel Messi, Martino led the team to an MLS-record points total in the 2024 regular season.

Inter Miami have reportedly parted company with head coach Tata Martino after the team fell at the first hurdle in the MLS Cup playoffs, losing to unfancied Atlanta United in Round One.

GiveMeSport reports that Martino decided the leave the club due to “personal reasons” little more than a year on from his arrival in South Florida.

Martino joined the team in the summer of 2023 to work alongside Lionel Messi and the rest of the ex-Barcelona quartet. The Argentinian coach led the team to a famous Leagues Cup triumph within two months of taking charge and his team cruised to the Supporters’ Shield title this season. However his side’s failure to progress in the postseason this year was a major shock.

Was 2024 a failure for Inter Miami?

For most teams, setting the single-season points record would be enough to make any campaign a success. But for Inter Miami – given their huge financial outlay and their short timeframe to take advantage of it – there was a sense that the playoffs were what really mattered. Martino said as much recently, addressing a press conference after the Atlanta loss.

“It’s not a successful season when you’re knocked out in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals,” Martino admitted. “There were good things, there were bad things. If you look at where we were last November, clearly the club has made progress, not just the team. But based on our playoff expectations, we fell way short.”

“We got used to achieving the goals we set for ourselves in the last part of the year, but the most important one slipped away,” he continued.

Martino has previously managed Barcelona and the Argentina national team, along with a number of roles with major club sides in South America. It’s not yet clear whether the 61-year-old will look for another job elsewhere or take some time away from the game.
