Luego de casi dos años sin novedades, el caso denominado FIFA Gate ha sumado un nuevo capítulo en los tribunales de Brooklyn cuando la fiscalía publicó nuevas denuncias vinculadas a la causa que estalló en 2015 y desnudó los oscuros manejos que existían dentro de la Casa Madre del fútbol mundial.

Por primera vez se apuntó formalmente al pago de sobornos por parte de dos países: Rusia y Catar, elegidos como sedes de las competiciones más codiciadas del planeta. Según reveló el periodista especializado Ken Bensinger, hubo dirigentes latinoamericanos que recibieron millones de dólares para votar a estas dos naciones como sedes de los Mundiales de 2018 y 2022.

En este contexto, el ex presidente de la entidad internacional, quien también ha sido investigado por su presunta administración fraudulenta, Joseph Blatter, advirtió que “Estados Unidos podría organizar la Copa del Mundo en 2022, en lugar de 2026”. “¡Son capaces, no es ciencia ficción! Japón también podría hacerlo. Ambos se ofrecieron para organizarlo”, enfatizó el ex funcionario cuando fue consultado por el periódico alemán Bild.

En el marco del escándalo FIFA, que estalló en 2015, el gobierno estadounidense ha acusado a un total de 45 personas y a varias empresas deportivas de más de 90 delitos, como pagar o aceptar más de 200 millones de dólares en sobornos.

De los 45 acusados, cinco han fallecido. Un total de 22 se declararon culpables, y de ellos sólo seis han sido sentenciados. Una docena aún están en sus países, donde fueron procesados por la justicia local o están en libertad mientras combaten la extradición. Solo fueron a juicio tres jerarcas que se declararon inocentes. El ex jefe del fútbol brasileño José Maria Marín y el ex jefe de la Conmebol, el paraguayo Juan Ángel Napout, fueron hallados culpables y condenados a penas de prisión, mientras que el ex jefe del fútbol peruano Manuel Burga fue absuelto.

“Germany could do it. But this would mean the World Cup being staged in Europe again after 2018,” Blatter said. “Europe therefore would not be first choice. The United States could do it instead of 2026. They are capable, it’s not rocket science! Japan could also do it. They also bid to host the 2022 World Cup.”

There would still be massive logistical roadblocks to this. As Blatter mentioned, the upcoming 2022 tournament is not yet featuring an expanded field, so filling out a scheduled also playing games in Mexico and Canada could be troublesome with fewer games. If only the United States hosted in 2022 and the 2026 bid was reopened, Mexico and Canada could be left out in the cold, which would clearly not go over well.
