TCC anuncia nueva beca / TCC announces new scholarship

TULSA, OK – Tulsa Community College y la honorable Kathy Taylor, junto con su familia, han anunciado una nueva beca para ayudar a los estudiantes a alcanzar sus sueños de ir a la universidad. Llamada así por la madre de Taylor, la beca Lola Catherine McGarvey Taylor Endowed Brinda acceso a un título universitario para estudiantes que tienen necesidades financieras.

“Sabemos que los desafíos financieros son una de las razones principales por las que nuestros estudiantes no logran graduarse, y las becas son clave para eliminar esa barrera financiera. Gracias a donantes generosos como Kathy Taylor, nuestros estudiantes tienen acceso al apoyo que necesitan para tener éxito”, dijo la Dra. Leigh Goodson, presidenta y directora ejecutiva de TCC.

El anuncio de la beca coincide con lo que habría sido el cumpleaños número 100 de Lola Taylor. Nació en 1920, el mismo año en que las mujeres ganaron el derecho al voto con la 19ª Enmienda. Falleció en 1974. Al describir a su madre, Kathy Taylor dice que se adelantó a su tiempo y rompió las barreras de género.

“Mi madre fue empoderada y nunca se sintió atada a la convención tradicional que se celebraba para las mujeres en ese momento. Progresista y ferozmente independiente, desarrolló su propia voz desde el principio a través de actividades de discurso y debate en la escuela secundaria y la universidad, que son atributos transmitidos a sus hijos y nietos”, dijo Taylor.

Ese espíritu independiente llevó a Kathy Taylor a la escuela de leyes, se convirtió en abogada, ingresó al servicio público como secretaria de comercio y turismo de Oklahoma, y luego elegida como 38º alcalde de Tulsa.

“Ella me inculcó la esperanza, la fe y la confianza en que cualquier desafío podría superarse”, dijo Taylor.

La beca Lola Catherine McGarvey Taylor Endowed se otorgará anualmente. Es una de las cerca de 200 nuevas becas en TCC financiadas a través de Clearing the Pathway: Campaign for Completion. En 2018, TCC lanzó públicamente la iniciativa de $20 millones con el objetivo de recaudar $5 millones para becas, parcialmente financiadas con una subvención de desafío de la Fundación de la Familia Charles y Lynn Schusterman.

TCC announces new scholarship

TULSA, OK — Tulsa Community College and the Honorable Kathy Taylor, along with her family, have announced a new endowed scholarship to help students achieve their dreams of going to college. Named after Taylor’s mother, the Lola Catherine McGarvey Taylor Endowed Scholarship provides access to a college degree for students who have a financial need.

“We know financial challenges are one of the primary reasons why our students fall short of graduating, and scholarships are key to removing that financial barrier. Because of generous donors like Kathy Taylor, our students have access to the support they need to be successful,” said TCC President and CEO Dr. Leigh Goodson.

The scholarship announcement coincides with what would have been Lola Taylor’s 100th birthday. She was born in 1920, the same year women won the right to vote with the 19th Amendment. She passed away in 1974. In describing her mother, Kathy Taylor says she was ahead of her time and broke gender barriers.

“My mother was empowered and never felt bound to the traditional convention held for women, at the time. Progressive and fiercely independent, she developed her own voice early through speech and debate activities in high school and college which are attributes passed down to her children and grandchildren,” said Taylor.

That independent spirit carried Kathy Taylor through law school, becoming an attorney, entering public service as Oklahoma’s Secretary of Commerce and Tourism, and then elected Tulsa’s 38th mayor.

“She instilled in me hope, faith, and confidence that any challenge could be overcome,” said Taylor.

The Lola Catherine McGarvey Taylor Endowed Scholarship will be awarded annually. It is one of nearly 200 new scholarships at TCC funded through the Clearing the Pathway: Campaign for Completion. In 2018, TCC publicly launched the $20 million initiative with the goal of raising $5 million for endowed scholarships, partially funded with a challenge grant from the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation.
