Evento navideño en la iglesia San Francisco / Christmas event Dec. 5 at St. Francis Church

La navidad llegará pronto para las familias que sufren dificultades económicas, gracias a los esfuerzos del Consejo de Vecindarios Seguros (Council for Safe Neighborhoods ) y varias organizaciones asociadas. Un evento comunitario especial se llevará a cabo el sábado 5 de diciembre, de 11 am a 1:00 pm en la Iglesia Católica San Francisco Javier, 2434 E Almirante Blvd.

Vicente Ruiz es el fundador del Consejo de Barrios Seguros y presidente de la Coalición de Organizaciones Hispanas (COHO), los dos principales patrocinadores del evento. Ruiz explicó que el grupo organiza múltiples eventos a lo largo del año, que normalmente incluyen familias que se reúnen y disfrutan de comida gratis y actividades.

“Pero debido al repunte de contagiados por COVID-19 en este momento, lo estamos haciendo como un evento de autoservicio”, explicó Ruiz. “Tendremos vacunas contra la gripe disponibles a través de COHO y regalos de navidad a través del Consejo para Vecindarios Seguros”.

Los primeros socorristas de Tulsa estarán disponibles para ayudar, incluyendo el Departamento de Policía de Tulsa, la Oficina del Sheriff y el Departamento de Bomberos. St. Francis Church está proporcionando la ubicación, y Ruiz dijo que a pesar de que este evento es necesariamente más pequeño debido a la pandemia, espera ayudar a tantas familias como sea posible.

“El año pasado tuvimos tal vez 1500 asistentes, pero este año probablemente solo serán alrededor de 500”, dijo Ruiz.

Este evento es uno de los pocos obsequios navideños en la ciudad que no requieren ningún comprobante de residencia legal para participar. Es simplemente para ayudar a las familias necesitadas de la comunidad que de otra manera tendrían unas navidades muy escasas.

Ruiz sabe que este ha sido un año difícil, especialmente para aquellos en la comunidad hispana que perdieron sus trabajos o tuvieron que estar en situaciones de riesgo porque trabajar desde casa no era una opción, pero espera que esta temporada navideña sea feliz.

“La parte más importante es estar a salvo”, dijo, instando a todos en la comunidad a pensar en los demás y tomar precauciones para evitar enfermarse. “Quizás puedas manejarlo, pero los otros miembros de tu familia quizás no. Al protegerse a sí mismo, proteges a los demás”.

Christmas event Dec. 5 at St. Francis Church

Christmas will come early for families suffering economic hardship, thanks to the efforts of the Council for Safe Neighborhoods and several partner organizations. A special community event will be held Saturday, December 5, from 11 am until 1:00 pm at St Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2434 E Admiral Blvd.

Vicente Ruiz is the founder of the Council for Safe Neighborhoods and President of the Coalition of Hispanic Organizations (COHO), the two principal sponsors of the event. Ruiz explained that the group hosts multiple events throughout the year, which normally include families coming together and enjoying free food and activities.

“But because COVID-19 is so bad right now, we are doing this as a drive-through event,” Ruiz explained. “We will have flu shots available through COHO and Christmas gifts through the Council for Safe Neighborhoods.”

Tulsa’s first responders will be on hand to help out, including the Tulsa Police Department, Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office, and the Tulsa Fire Department. St. Francis Church is providing the location, and Ruiz said that even though this event is necessarily smaller due the pandemic, he still hopes to help as many families as possible.

“Last year we had maybe 1500 attend, but this year it will probably only be around 500,” Ruiz said.

This event is one of the few Christmas giveaways in the city that don’t require any proof of legal residency to participate. It is purely to help those needy families in the community who otherwise would have a very scant Christmas holiday.

Ruiz knows this has been a difficult year, especially for those in the Hispanic community who lost their jobs or had to be in risky situations because working from home was not an option, but he hopes this holiday season will be a happy one.

“The most important part is to be safe,” he said, urging everyone in the community to think of others and take precautions to avoid getting sick. “Maybe you can handle it, but the others in your family might not. By protecting yourself you are protecting others.”
