Muchos años atrás Casey Jones decidió fundar en Tulsa un centro para la asistencia de los inmigrantes intentando así ayudar a varios de sus amigos extranjeros. La necesidad de asesoría legal era imperativa y muchos no tenían fondos suficientes para contratar un abogado, otros carecían de los contactos necesarios para generar una red donde conseguir empleo y más de uno se sentía perdido en cuanto a las medidas impositivas y las cuestiones administrativas de los Estados Unidos. Por eso creó el American Dream Center, un lugar especializado en asistencia integral a inmigrante donde Vera Burgess y Dalia Lira hacen lo imposible para que todos se sientan bienvenidos y nunca pierdan la esperanza. 

Vera es directora del centro y esta certificada como representante del departamento de justicia para asistir a los inmigrantes en temas de inmigración. “Este centro busca asistir a los inmigrantes con sus documentos y ofrecerles servicios, para ayudarlos con búsqueda de empleo, tramitar su seguro social y otros trámites”, explicó.

“Lo único que debe hacer la persona es llamar por teléfono y concertar una cita en la que se hace una entrevista para evaluar la situación del migrante. Y después si la persona califica ayudamos con tramites de ciudadanía, pedidos de green card, peticiones de familiares y esas cuestiones”, aclaró, resaltando que la institución no ofrece representación legal ante la corte o la policía pero si delega los casos con los mejores abogados de inmigración de la ciudad. “Lo que si ofrecemos es asesoría legal y administrativa a costos bajos”, especificó, asegurando que hasta la fecha son más de 300 las familias que han sido ayudadas por la organización.

 “Básicamente los inmigrantes pagan solo una fracción del costo, y lo manejamos por una escala. Si ellos traen sus tax returns, impuestos federales, podemos determinar si califican para un descuento de hasta el 50%”, remarcó Dalia Lira, encargada de los programas de defensa y asistencia al inmigrante. 

 “Este es un lugar que da esperanza a muchos de los inmigrantes porque es de bajo costo a comparación de un abogado”, agregó Dalia, apuntando lo difícil que es conseguir una tarifa digna y un servicio de calidad en la ciudad.

En el American Dream Center se ofrecen opciones varias para mejorar la situación inmigratoria de los extranjeros con tarifas accesibles, descuentos que son financiados por donaciones, fondos de distintas iglesias y fundaciones de la ciudad como la Shusterman foundation y la George Kaiser Foundation. 

“Invitamos a toda la gente para que nos llame para ayudarlos con sus trámites de peticiones familiares, green card, ciudadanía, pedir a alguien de afuera y también para solicitar visa de prometidos. Sobre todo en el mes del amor”, invitó la directora. 

“Hablamos inglés y español pero tratamos con personas de todos lados, África, Asia, Medio Oriente, son todos bienvenidos”, aseguró Dalia.

Tulsa, OK- Several years ago Casey Jones decided to found a center for the assistance of the immigrant community in Tulsa to try to help his foreign friends. The need for legal assistance was high and many did not have enough to consult with lawyers. Others were in need of a solid network to be able to find good jobs, but there wasn’t any. And last but not least were those who needed help with administrative errands, taxes and other cultural issues they had to face by being new in America. And that is exactly why he created the American Dream Center, a place that advocates for each immigrant where Vera Burgess and Dalia Lira do the impossible to make everyone feel welcome and never out of hope. 

Vera directs the center and holds a certification as representative of the department of justice to assist immigrants with their legal issues. “What we try to do is help them with their documents and offer them services, such as finding new jobs, obtaining a social security number and more,” she explained.

“The only thing they have to do is call, ask for an appointment and on that interview, we will figure out the situation the immigrant is in. And afterwards if the person qualifies, we can help them get their citizenship, their green card, file a petition for a relative and other things,” she stated, highlighting the center does not offer legal representation for the courts or the police, but they do work with the best lawyers in town. “What we do offer is legal assessment at a low cost,” she explained. So far the American Dream Center has helped more than 300 families.

“Immigrants pay a fraction of the cost, and we measure the fees with a scale. If they bring their tax returns we can figure out if they qualify for a 50% discount,” said Dalia Lira, advocate assistant at the Center. “This is a place that gives hope to many immigrants, because it offers a low cost service in comparison to the fees of a lawyer,” she added, pointing out how hard it is these days finding good lawyers at a decent price. 

The American Dream Center offers solutions for most of the typical problems that affect the immigrant community at accessible rates, which are possible with the help of individual donations and the support of the Shusterman and the George Kaiser Foundations. 

“We invite everyone to call us so that we can help them with their papers, their relatives’ petitions, green cards, citizenship issues and filing the fiancé visa, especially in the month of love,” the director said.

“We speak English and Spanish, but deal with people from all around the world — Africa, Asia, the Middle East, everyone is welcome,” added Dalia.
