By Julia Gorman – TULSA, Okla. — A Tulsa family’s life is dramatically improved after they received a new wheelchair-accessible van thanks to help from the Green Country community.

Sean Lewis has cerebral palsy and uses a motorized wheelchair to move around. He then also needs a specialized, wheelchair-accessible van to travel.

Lewis and his mom Kyle Miller were using a roughly 18-year-old minivan with a pile of problems and more than 215,000 miles on it. The vehicle was holding on by a thread and was not reliable when the family needed to get out of the house.

Then, FOX23 reported a close friend started a fundraiser needed to get the family a new van with a price tag of more than $60,000.

There was no telling how long it would take to raise this much money, but the family reached their goal only about 45 days later!

FOX23 was there when the family picked up their new, red van.

“We have the best community that anyone could ask for,” Lewis said. Miller added, “it’s almost surreal, it didn’t even seem like it was really possible.”

There are no broken parts, squeaking equipment or lack of air-conditioning or heat. Lewis an even get in the new van all on his own. There’s also a sunroof where Lewis can lift his wheelchair up high enough to pop his head out!

And while you may think the new van was named Ruby because of her red color, think again. Instead, it’s a connection to the Bible. Lewis said, “Ruby symbolizes God’s sacrifice.” To him, the van represents the sacrifice of our community to help his family in their time of need.

“Thank you to everyone!” said Lewis.

Sean Lewis tiene parálisis cerebral y usa una silla de ruedas motorizada para moverse. También necesita una furgoneta especializada accesible para sillas de ruedas para viajar.

Lewis y su madre Kyle Miller estaban usando una minivan de aproximadamente 18 años con un montón de problemas y más de 215.000 millas. El vehículo se sujetaba a un hilo y no era fiable cuando la familia necesitaba salir de la casa.

Y aunque puedas pensar que la nueva furgoneta se llamó Ruby debido a su color rojo, piénsalo de nuevo. En cambio, es una conexión con la Biblia. Lewis dijo: “Ruby simboliza el sacrificio de Dios”. Para él, la furgoneta representa el sacrificio de nuestra comunidad para ayudar a su familia en su momento de necesidad.
