(Sept. 30, 2018) — Ike Opara’s 52nd-minute header helped Sporting Kansas City (15-8-7, 52 points) to a 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake (13-11-7, 46 points) on Sunday at Children’s Mercy Park. Rookie forward Corey Baird had fired the visitors ahead in the ninth minute before Opara restored parity early in the second half, effectively splitting the points in a tense battle between Western Conference rivals.

The result keeps second-place Sporting KC two points behind Western Conference leaders FC Dallas with four regular season games still to play. Real Salt Lake, meanwhile, holds a two-point cushion over the LA Galaxy for the sixth and last playoff spot heading into the decisive month of October.

Manager Peter Vermes said “I think we were a lot better this week than last week. I thought we had a lot of urgency. I thought that this game was much different. It would be nice to score some of the chances, because we created some really good ones. I can’t criticize the team for the fact that I thought we played very well. We kept our composure even though we went down 1-0. We scored off a set piece. The number of chances we created was fantastic, we just didn’t put those other ones away to finish off the three points. We played well and I thought we had a good mentality. Our emotion in the game was good, too. We could have lost ourselves when we went down 1-0 and maybe conceded another one. We didn’t do that so that part was good.” Peter Vermes Concluded.
