José María Briones: El cura de los hispanos en Tulsa

Tulsa, OK- ¿Quién dijo que la religión católica está en crisis? Bueno, en Tulsa, pareciera que la religión católica está más de moda que nunca, y nada mejor para atestiguarlo que concurrir a la Iglesia Santo Tomás Moro por la mañana, donde el padre José María Briones Herrera se desvela junto a la comunidad y su misión no descansa. 

Hay quienes dicen que es el padre carisma, él sólo se siente un servidor de Dios, alguien que hace su deber con responsabilidad, empatía y comprensión. Cuenta la historia que decidió hacerse cura porque el único consuelo que tenía en su pueblo natal era la iglesia. “Mi madre estaba siempre enferma y mi abuela intentaba distraernos con dos cosas, la Iglesia y el circo”, le dijo el padre Briones Herrera a La Semana.  “Tenia dos opciones o me hacía cura o cirquero”, confesó entre risas. Sin embargo, su vocación siempre estuvo clara y la decisión de servir prevaleció ante la duda. “Después de estudiar teología empezaron las dudas, no sabia si era la costumbre de querer estar en el seminario o si realmente quería ser sacerdote”, confesó Briones Herrera. “Entonces, decidí dejar un año, me dedique a ser profesor de escuela y finalmente volví”. “Ese año que estuve fuera tuve mi novia y me di cuenta de que no era para mi porque me quitaba mucho tiempo, yo trabajaba en la escuela y con mi familia y eso me absorbía demasiado. Fue entonces que decidí regresar al seminario y esa ha sido mi mejor decisión”, dijo el padre que hace 26 años es sacerdote y hace 20 vive en Tulsa. “El celibato no es una carga, yo quise vivir de esta manera, no me he privado de nada.”, aseguró el padre. “Así no tienes nada que te ate, es la situación más conveniente por una cuestión pastoral”, dijo el padre que considera que ser sacerdote es un trabajo de 24 horas. 

Briones Herrera llegó a la zona en una especie de intercambio que duraría 6 meses y ya le lleva la mitad de la vida. En la ciudad encontró fieles de más de 20 nacionalidades dispuestos a formar una gran familia espiritual a la que él intenta “Ahorrarles un poquito el sufrimiento”.  “Yo no soy el sacerdote de los mexicanos, soy el de la iglesia católica”, admitió el padre. “Si nuestra gente se desvela trabajando, yo me desvelo con ellos”, dijo tajante sobre su rol en la comunidad. 

Durante sus años en la ciudad el padre fue testigo de decisiones políticas truncas como la ley 1804 y se vio obligado a responder por la comunidad desde la contención. “Cuando se aprobó el 1804 empezamos con los retiros, las noches de adoración y las horas santas”, instancias que le permitieron hacerse más escuchado entre los hispanos de la ciudad.  

El padre Briones quiere una iglesia con menos sentimentalismos, una religión de verdadera convicción en donde el sentirse bien  surja de la fe y no de la oportunidad. “El mundo hoy busca solo sentirse bien y la fe es algo más,  es un compromiso de vida. Estamos llamados a volver al cristo de hace 2000 años, volver a la comunidad primitiva, a la comunidad de los Apóstoles”, dijo con convicción.  

“En general nos estamos desacramentalizandos todo lo queremos sin ningún compromiso, y los jóvenes quieren recibir sin comprometerse. Las redes sociales nos han ayudado en muchas cosas pero nos han complicado mucho mas”. 

En tiempos turbulentos para la Iglesia Católica el padre asegura que su Iglesia saldrá triunfante.  “Nos confiamos mucho tiempo pensando que todos estaban evangelizados pero hay que re –evangelizar, somos muy propensos a los vicios. En Tulsa antes podías dejar la puerta abierta del auto, ahora no.” 

“La pedofilia está en la comunidad, no son sólo los sacerdotes, es la gente que menos te esperas. Tíos, abuelos, padres, maestros. Yo no lo justifico de ninguna manera. Aquí en mi parroquia ha habido situaciones en las cuales yo no me he quedado callado”, dijo el sacerdote sobre el mal que más afecta a la iglesia. 

 “El abusador va a ir donde hay niños y por eso hay que tomar todas las precauciones, en la diócesis se controla el prontuario de todos quienes trabajan con niños y todos sabemos que no podemos quedarnos callados si sabemos algo”, dijo con convicción. 

 “La comunidad que tenemos aquí es una comunidad inmigrante y por eso tenemos la obligación de hacerlos sentir en casa y darles la información que necesitan para vivir. Yo soy un inmigrante también pero no por eso voy a estar en contra de  la comunidad americana”, dijo el padre.  

En Santo Tomás Moro la iglesia se renueva y se vincula con todos desde la caridad y la compasión. “La iglesia está abierta para todos, dios no desprecia a nadie, dios ama a todos”, aseguró Briones Herrera.  

Con miras a la próxima Pascua, Briones Herrera aseguró que el futuro son los jóvenes y aconsejó: “En vez de ser diferentes tenemos que ver en lo que somos iguales”. Mientras tanto,  “Quiero proclamar el evangelio y vivirlo, nada mas”.

Tulsa, OK- Who said Catholicism is in crisis? Well, in Tulsa, it seems that the Catholic church is more fashionable than ever, and there is no better way to witness this than to attend Saint Thomas More church, where Father José María Briones Herrera ministers to the community in his mission without rest.  

There are those who say that Briones is “Father Charisma,” but he feels he is just a servant of God, someone who does his duty with responsibility, empathy and understanding.  

The story has it that Briones decided to become a priest because the only consolation he had in his hometown was the church.  

“My mother was always sick, and my grandmother tried to distract us with two things, the Church and the circus,” Padre Briones told La Semana.  

“I had two options: either I became a priest or joined a circus,” he recalled, laughing. However, his vocation was always clear and the decision to serve prevailed in the face of doubt.  

“After studying theology, the doubts began – I did not know if it was the custom of wanting to be in the seminary or if I really wanted to be a priest,” confessed Briones. “Then, I decided to quit a year, dedicate myself to being a school teacher, but finally I came back. That year I was away I had my girlfriend and I realized that it was not for me because it took away a lot of time. I worked at school and with my family and that absorbed me too much.” 

“It was then that I decided to return to the seminary and that has been my best decision,” said the man who became a priest 26 years ago and has lived in Tulsa for the past 20.  

Briones reflected on one aspect of his chosen life that keeps others from joining the priesthood. 

“Celibacy is not a burden,” he insisted. “I wanted to live in this way, I have not deprived myself of anything. That way you do not have anything to bind you, it’s the most convenient situation for a pastoral life.” 

Briones, who considers being a priest a 24-hour a day job, arrived in the area in a kind of exchange that was supposed to last for six months but already taken half of his life. In the city he found faithful of more than 20 nationalities willing to form a great spiritual family to which he tries to “save a little suffering.”  

“I am not the priest of the Mexicans, I am a priest of the Catholic Church,” the father said. “If our people keep working, I wake up with them,”  

During his years in the city Briones has witnessed harmful political acts such as the anti-immigrant law HB 1804 and was forced to respond to the community from a position of contention, but doing so in a prayerful and spiritual manner. 

“When 1804 was approved, we began with retreats, nights of adoration and holy hours,“ he remembered, instances that allowed him to be heard more among the Hispanics of the city. 

Father Briones wants a church with less sentimentality, a religion of true conviction where feeling good arises from faith and not from opportunity.  

“The world today seeks only to feel good, and faith is something else, it is a commitment to life. We have been called to return to Christ 2000 years ago, to return to the primitive community, to the community of the Apostles,” he said with conviction. “In general we are de–sacramentalizing everything we want without any commitment, and young people want to receive without compromising. Social networks have helped us in many things but they have complicated us in much more.” 

In turbulent times for the Catholic Church, the father assures that his Church will emerge triumphant.  

“We trusted for a long time thinking that everyone was evangelized but we must re-evangelize, we are very prone to vices,” Briones observed. “In Tulsa you could leave the car door open before, now you cannot. Pedophilia is in the community, it’s not just the priests, it’s the people whom you least expect — uncles, grandparents, parents, teachers. I do not justify it in any way.” 

“Here in my parish there have been situations in which I have not remained silent,” the priest said about the evil that most affects the church. “The abuser will go where there are children and that is why we have to take all the precautions. In the diocese we control the records of all those who work with children and we all know that we cannot remain silent if we know something.”  

“The community we have here is an immigrant community and that is why we have an obligation to make them feel at home and give them the information they need to live,” Briones said. “I am an immigrant too, but that does not make me be against the American community. 

In Saint Thomas More the church is renewed and is connected to its parishoners and the community through charity and compassion.  

“The church is open to all, God does not despise anyone, God loves everyone,” said Briones. 

With a view to Easter ahead, Briones said that the future is young and advised: “Instead of being different we have to see how we are the same.”  

And meanwhile, the good father says, “I want to proclaim the gospel and live it, nothing more.” (La Semana)
