“The Continental”: de qué se trata la precuela de “John Wick”

La historia buscará explicar cuál fue el origen de la trama protagonizada por Keanu Reeves

Este lunes se anunció la esperada precula del universo de las cintas de John Wick. The Continental relatará cómo fue el origen de la historia protagonizada por el actor Keanu Reeves, 40 años atrás de los hechos ocurridos en el hotel para asesinos seriales, por medio de una corta serie de tres episodios de larga duración.

El portal The Hollywood Reporter aseguró que el director y el productor ejecutivo será Albert Hughes del primero y tercer episodio; sin embargo, se desconoce quién será la cabeza detrás del segundo capítulo de la miniserie.

El guion está a cargo de Basil Iwanyk, los productores ejecutivos confirmados son Dereck Kolstad, Chad Stahelski y David Leitch, mientras que Reeves sigue en negociaciones para integrarse al equipo de producción; por tanto, la serie contaría con las ideas de los creadores originales de la famosa franquicia.

Los reportes también apuntaron a que la historia contará con un presupuesto de 20 millones de dólares, un monto que rebasa al de algunas producciones cinematográficas de bajo renombre y que es alto para un serie de 3 episodios.

En esta ocasión, la trama se centrará en el joven Winston (que en las cintas originales es interpretado por el histrión Ian McShane) durante la década de los setenta en la ciudad de Nueva York, contará cómo fue que se fundó la peculiar cadena hotelera al alojar a diversos tipos de sujetos con profesiones un tanto cuestionables.

La noticia se dio a conocer en medio del rodaje de la cuarta película de John Wick y la confirmación de una quinta entrega. Mientras que el sitio Lionsgate comunicó que la saga ha recaudado más de 600 millones de dólares a nivel mundial, por lo cual se ha buscado expandir el universo y explicar las bases de su creación.

Asimismo, han comenzado los rumores de una posible historia derivada de la original, la cual llevaría por nombre Ballerina y estaría basada en la misteriosa compañía de ballet que aparece en la tercera entrega Parabellum; no obstante, aún no se tiene confirmación, aunque diversos medios estadounidenses aseguran que ya se encuentra en proceso.

Donnie Yen se unió al universo John Wick

El pasado mes de junio se anunció que el actor Donnie Yen se unió a la cuarta entrega de la saga, interpretará a un viejo amigo del protagonista Wick y entrelazará su historia de vida con la trama de la cinta; es así como el popular actor de Star Wars y Ip Man se unirá al elenco junto con Reeves y Rina Sawayama.

“Tenemos mucha suerte de que Donnie Yen se una a la franquicia. Estoy deseando trabajar con él en este nuevo y emocionante proyecto”, expresó el director Chad Stahelski en un comunicado de prensa.

Mientras que Basil Iwanyk, productor del largometraje añadió que “Donnie Yen aportará una energía vibrante y poderosa a la franquicia. Estábamos decididos a incorporarlo a John Wick 4 y estamos encantados de tener la oportunidad de tener un talento tan importante para colaborar con Keanu”.

La cuarta película está escrita por Shay Hatten y Michael Finch, en tanto la producción corre a cargo de Erica Lee, Louise Rosner, Iwanyk, Stahelski y Reeves. Comenzó la producción del proyecto en el verano y el rodaje tendrá lugar en diversas localizaciones de Francia, Alemania y Japón.

John Wick Prequel Series The Continental Will Be 3-Part Movie-Length Event

The John Wick prequel series titled The Continental is confirmed to be a 3-night series with each entry being the length of a feature film.

The John Wick prequel series, The Continental, will be released over the course of 3 nights as feature-length installments. This franchise originated in 2014, which follows Wick (Keanu Reeves) after he has left his days of being a hitman behind him. After a group of assailants break into his house, steal his car, and kill the dog that his late wife left for him, he goes on a rampage for revenge. Little did they realize, they wronged one of the most dangerous men around.

The original John Wick went on to release two more sequels, titled John Wick: Chapter 2 and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. However, there are still a couple more films in development to continue the series. Director Chad Stahelski is set to continue in his role for all installments. In addition, there was a television show announced called The Continental, which will be a prequel to John Wick. Lionsgate and Starz’s series is set around the title hotel, which acts as a safe haven for assassins.

THR reported that The Continental has been redeveloped into a story that will be told over the course of three installments. Each entry will be around 90 minutes long with budgets of around $20 million. Director Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli) has officially been attached to direct the first and the third entries. However, no director has been brought on board for the second.

More recently, Hughes has directed an episode of The Good Lord Bird and the 2018 film, Alpha. While he often co-directs with his brother, Allen Hughes, he will be directing these episodes of The Continental solo. However, the term “episodes” should be used loosely, as the entries will be more reminiscent of a trilogy of films, given the 90-minute runtimes. The fourth entry of the film franchise was pushed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. While it was supposed to be filmed back-to-back with the fifth film, that news was later retracted by Lionsgate. The John Wick universe is rapidly expanding in terms of both scope and scale.

Between more sequels coming down the pipeline and The Continental, fans of the series have a lot to look forward to. While the title character is certainly fun to follow, it’ll be exciting to see how The Continental turns out, as the now iconic hotel for assassins has so many potentially interesting stories that it could tell. However, Stahelski has been so closely tied to directing the films, so hopefully Hughes is a good fit. The budgets for the Disney+ Marvel series are quite large, but for the reason of ensuring that they look and feel like they belong within the same universe as the movies. Since The Continental seems to have a healthy budget set, hopefully it will do the same for the John Wick universe. The news of the series being spread out over the course of three episodes, or movies, will be an interesting format that seemed to work for Netflix’s Fear Street. BY JEFF NELSON
