Miguel Cabrera se une al club de los 500 jonrones de la MLB

El venzolano Cabrera se convirtió este domingo en el vigésimo octavo jugador de Grandes Ligas en llegar a los 500 jonrones y es el primer venezolano en alcanzar dicha cifra

El toletero venezolano Miguel Cabrera se convirtió en el 28vo jugador de Grandes Ligas en llegar a los 500 jonrones -y el primero desde el dominicano David Ortiz en el 2015- al conectarle un cuadrangular frente a Steven Matz en el partido entre los Tigres y los Azulejos este domingo en Toronto, publica la MLB en su portal oficial.

Cabrera es el 28vo miembro del club de los 500 jonrones. Se une a Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Alex Rodríguez, el quisqueyano Albert Pujols, Willie Mays, Ken Griffey Jr., Jim Thome, el quisqueyano Sammy Sosa, Frank Robinson, Mark McGwire, Harmon Killebrew, el cubano Rafael Palmeiro, Reggie Jackson, el dominicano Manny Ramírez, Mike Schmidt, Ortiz, Mickey Mantle, Jimmie Foxx, Willie McCovey, Frank Thomas, Ted Williams, Ernie Banks, Eddie Mathews, Mel Ott, Gary Sheffield y Eddie Murray.

Y por supuesto, es el primer venezolano en alcanzar dicha cifra, destaca la MLB.

Cabrera es el primero en llegar a la marca de 500 cuadrangulares desde Ortiz, quien dio su bambinazo número 500 el 12 de septiembre del 2015 al vestir el uniforme de los Medias Rojas. Cabrera es el segundo jugador activo con más vuelacercas después de Pujols, quien se integró al club el 22 de abril del 2014 con los Angelinos y hasta ahora lleva 677.

Miguel ha dado 362 de sus 500 jonrones con los Tigres, ubicándose como tercero en la historia del club, por detrás de Al Kaline (399) y Norm Cash (373).

¿Cuáles son los próximos récords para Cabrera? Uno importante: 3,000 hits. Miguel tiene 2,955 imparables, así que está a 45 de ingresar a uno de los clubes más exclusivos de Grandes Ligas, el de 500 jonrones y 3,000 imparables. Sólo hay 32 miembros. Aparte de Pujols, quien ya superó la marca, Cabrera es el único jugador activo que está cerca (el dominicano Robinson Canó sería el próximo, con 2,624 hits).

Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera Becomes 28th Member of MLB’s 500-Home Run Club

Detroit Tigers star Miguel Cabrera reached a major career milestone, hitting his 500th home run Sunday against the Toronto Blue Jays.

That total puts him 28th on the all-time home run list behind Eddie Murray (504).

As he approached the 2021 season, this was one of two big benchmarks within Cabrera’s reach. Now, the question is how long until he registers his 3,000th hit, with 45 standing between him and one of the more legendary offensive stats in baseball history.

The 38-year-old has fallen victim to Father Time in recent seasons. He slugged a then-career low .399 in 2017 before appearing in just 38 games the following season. The two-time MVP proceeded to finish with 12 home runs, 59 RBI and a .282/.346/.398 slash line in 2019.

Opening Day raised hopes of at least one more strong season from the future Hall of Famer as he homered in his first at-bat.

That was a bit of a mirage as he has a .246/.312/.375 slash line through his first 98 appearances.

Cabrera makes $32 million in each of 2022 and 2023 before the Tigers have an out thanks to his $30 million mutual option in 2024. Unless he retires or the team absorbs a lot of dead money, he isn’t going anywhere before 2024.

As the last vestige of the franchise’s four-year run of success that included an American League pennant in 2012, Cabrera remains a fan favorite in Motor City. Even in a diminished form, his presence makes the Tigers’ general rebuild a little more tolerable in the short term.
